OVERVIEW

Yamaha is one of the leaders in digital piano production, and they continue that tradition with the DGX-650. A true ensemble digital piano, the DGX-650 has a variety of interactive features that make learning, playing, and sharing music fun for everyone regardless of skill level. With a full-size 88-note Graded Hammer Standard action keyboard, the DGX-650 not only gives you the authentic feel of playing a piano, it also incorporates Damper Resonance DSP and PureCF sampling that gives this digital version true and accurate sound reproduction of its acoustic counterpart. Add-in a USB audio recorder to instantly capture and share your musical achievements, and the DGX-650 is even better than the real thing.

PureCF-sampled piano
PureCF sampling starts with a meticulous recording of Yamaha's acclaimed CFIIIS 9' concert grand piano. This recording contains a number of dynamic levels from pianissimo to fortissimo, so you can experience the delicate touch of a soft passage or the pure power of two-handed chords.

Damper Resonance DSP
Damper Resonance digitally reproduces the sympathetic interaction between strings on acoustic pianos. When the damper pedal is used in a performance, the harmonics of other strings wash over the notes you play until the pedal is released.

88-note, weighted GHS action
A weighted action with heavier touch in the low end and lighter touch in the high end, just like the hammers inside an acoustic piano. Great for the aspiring pianist, practicing on the GHS action builds the proper finger technique for when the time comes to perform on an acoustic piano.

XG-optimized for You Are The Artist song books
Professionally-arranged, play-along XG song files from Yamaha MusicSoft are matched with best-selling song books from Hal Leonard. Learn to play songs made famous by artists like Elton John, Coldplay, Adele and more with the DGX-650 as your backing band.

USB Audio (WAV) Recording/Playback
Record performances or MIDI songs as uncompressed, CD-quality audio to a USB flash drive using the USB Audio Recorder. From there, copy to your computer to make CDs, share over the internet or transfer to your portable music player. You can also playback uncompressed WAV files stored on a USB flash drive.

Smart Chord
Smart Chord makes you sound like a pro, even if you're just learning how to play. With a single finger on your left hand, Smart Chord will create entire chords from simple Pop triads to complex jazz 7th and 9th chords. Accompaniment Styles create the rest of your virtual band so you can get straight to playing music.

Style Recommender
Style Recommender suggests a list of suitable Styles based on your playing. Play in a piano part, drum part or just tap a simple rhythm and Style Recommender will create a list of appropriate Styles based on what you played.

AUX line input
Connect any device with an audio output and hear it through the DGX-650's built-in speakers. Listen to music from your mobile device, hook up another keyboard or even a mixer and jam with friends. The DGX-650 makes a great speaker system for virtually any sound source.

128-note polyphony
Provides enough horsepower for dropout-free performances even while layering two Voices and playing two-handed, sustained chords with heavy pedaling. So as you become a more advanced player, your digital piano can respond to your skill level.

Classic piano touch. Contemporary music experience.

Made the decision after testing driving this in a local music store and reading great reviews.
Great piano feel and sounds. The display is kind of small to easily see the (score) music as it plays (you can view about four measure at a time), but the fact you can slow/pause it really helps. Having to scroll through/between menu's can be a bit cumbersome at times, but overall not bad. Great built-in speakers, very decent bass.
LOVE the ability to quickly and easily change tempo, rewind, and A-B loop parts of songs. Great way to help when learning new material. Excellent selection of built-in midi songs to play along with. You can mute any of six tracks. Nice to play additional midi files right from the usb drive.
Split and layering fairly easy. Good selection of various styles (rhythms & accompaniments). Shouldn't get bored soon. Didn't care at all for their "style recommender" function because it doesn't seems to be consistent or accurate.
Bottom line for me is I'm having so much fun learning new material, stuff that I've never played before. And it just sounds sssooo good when you play along with the songs.
There is much to offer here, whether you're just beginning or been playing out.

The DGX-650 88 key is an excellent product

It's an excellent tool for teaching, but the pedal is not what we see in the advertisement.

Comments about Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano:

This is a very nice keyboard. The hammer action is really easy and realistic. All the sounds are quality. My whole family has been putting a fair amount of time of playing on it. It's easy to lose yourself for a couple of hours in playing. This unit is heavy, so don't plan to move or go on the road with it without being prepared.

This is truly a great piano, everything we had looked for. Great sound, great look and many features! My son simply loves it! It arrived here so fast to my surprise. It is exactly as advertised and as was played in the video. We have only great things to say about this piano and about Musicians Friend!

Comments about Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano:

This is my 3rd Yamaha "DGX" keyboard. My last keyboard was the DGX 550 which I owned for about nine years. The DGX 650 came out last year and I was anxious to upgrade as my keyboard had gathered a few scratches over the years traveling from gig to gig. The screen on my 550 started to give me a few intermittent problems as well. I noticed the DGX could be paired with a subwoofer which caught my attention. I plan to pair it with some other amps I have if I ever need more bottom end than the factory Yamaha speakers give. The first thing you will notice with the 650 DGX is the feel and the sound is improved over the last model....and the last model was a good instrument! I like the idea of running an audio out from the headphone jack but still being able to use the keyboard speakers as monitors...this is an upgrade from the DGX550. In the piano voice the lows are clearer as well as the highs...hard to explain but it is slightly better. Its a great instrument. And if you're thinking about the white model - go for it...it's a little warmer tone to look at...the black is nice too - Yamaha makes the best keyboards for the money. This is my 4th Yamaha keyboard I've owned. I've been playing for (18) years. - Oh yeah, and you don't need to spend the extra money to buy the (3) pedal setup - get the M-Audio SP-2 Sustain Pedal for twenty USD which is all the upgrade you need from the factory joke of foot switch pedal. The sensitivity of this instrument and the volume control is all you need to play softly...The three pedal adder is overkill in my opinion and I would rarely use it on a keyboard...On an acoustic piano, I would use 2 of the 3 pedals for the style I play...on a keyboard, all you need is the twenty USD M-Audio pedal upgrade.

Comments about Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano:

After 10+ years using a relatively inexpensive, 25-key keyboard controller to trigger VST instruments, I began looking for something of greater quality - primarily weighted keys with some decent onboard piano / electric piano sounds. To my surprise, many "experts" essentially scoffed at the ambition, claiming such an instrument had somehow escaped the affordable market. A man of Christian faith, I knew the Lord was leading me to find what others considered impossible. My search ended after locating the DGX-650.

I've read the reviews complaining about the keyboard's weight. If you're looking for something light as a gentle breeze, you'll not find it here. It's "portable" compared to the likes of a baby grand ... but its weight communicates quality. Yamaha builds quality products - and I'm confident this instrument's only as hefty as necessary to house what I find to be an excellent keyboard.

Allow me to save you some time: If you're still running Windows XP, be sure to have upgraded to Service Pack 3 before downloading and installing Yamaha's USB - MIDI driver. Frustration turned to joy for me after doing so.

          I love this keyboard.

Comments about Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano:

This digital piano has very good piano sounds for the price. Feels pretty close to a real piano with the weighted keys. Easy to access sounds using the dial, and there are plenty of good quality sounds from drums to synths. Many of the instrument sounds (i.e. sax, banjo, etc.) are fun but hardly realistic. I bought this piano to practice on and perhaps to accompany myself as I learn how to program drums and other instruments to play along with (haven't done it yet, but it does have that capability). Good piano for a family; especially children.

I brought the white keyboard because of a comment I read about the black keyboard and its wood look. In hindsight the black keyboard would look great in our church. The white keyboard looks fine but black keyboard and stand would've looked a lot better. Other than the colors, everything else works great!

Comments about Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano:

There are lots of great keyboards out there, but I think Yamaha has pretty much mastered the art of creating digital keyboards. For the money you are NOT going to find a better keyboard. I needed a keyboard with excellent piano and organ sounds, and this thing has a plethora of beautiful and realistic sounds. And the weighted keys are about the best you're going to find on a digital piano. The only bad thing I can say about this is the color choice for the black version - they should've made it solid black, like how the white one is one solid color with no fake wood grain. That dark wood with the black just looks terrible to me…so I had to buy the white one. That's not necessarily a big deal, the white one looks classy, but I think it was a poor design choice for the black keyboard. If it was solid black I would've gone for it. But, like I said…sound and feel wise: it's going to be very hard to find a better keyboard without jumping up to much higher prices.
