Akai Professional

Portable keyboard controller with extensive software control.

The Akai Pro MPK mini is an ultra-compact mini-keyboard with an impressive array of buttons, knobs and pads to provide hands-on performance and production control no matter your location. MPK mini strikes the perfect balance between portability and comprehensive software control by melding together the complete control offered in the popular Akai Pro MPK family with the grab-and-go convenience of the LPK25 and LPD8. With a 25-note keyboard, 8 backlit, MPC-style pads and 8 Q-Link knobs, the MPK mini is the ultimate portable controller to get your music moving.

The MPK mini keyboard is ideal for quickly entering notes and phrases into your computer. The velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately express dynamics, while accessing different pitch ranges is done instantly through dedicated Octave Up and Octave Down buttons. Create sparkling, staccato leads and driving bass-lines in a variety of time denominations and patterns with MPK mini's built-in arpeggiator. A Tap-Tempo button gives you the ability to quickly adjust the arpeggiator clock, which is essential if you're looking to stay in sync with a band. A Sustain button holds notes after releasing your hand from the keyboard allowing you the opportunity to easily pound pads and twist knobs, with no pedal required.

MPK mini's 8 backlit, velocity-sensitive pads are based on Akai Professional’s MPC line of iconic music production stations. Great for firing one-shot samples and sequencing drum patterns, you can use the pads to send note information, MIDI CCs, or even program changes. Pressing the Bank button will quickly toggle between 2 banks of pads giving you access to 16 pads in total. Additionally, the MPK mini has 8 assignable Q-Link knobs to control virtually any parameter in your software.

MPK mini works plug-and-play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to your favorite software programs. The included software editor lets you quickly map MPK mini's controls as well.

Features:

This has 25 Keys 8 Pads Great volume control, USB plug in, Octave control, Appregiator, 2 Pad Banks, Easy to use sustain button, and very easy to set up and program to your computer. Not to mention extremely lightweight and portable.

Quality:

This has been a fantastic addition to my home studio. Lightweight easy to use and i have yet to have any problems whatsoever with this great machine. My one and only concern that im not in LOVE with is the keys could be a little heavier other than that the pads are great volume control great and is very easy to use.

Value:

For the price especially this is a very great efficient device that will help you alot. Its very easy to use and for what your paying its the perfect price.

Overall:

The Bottom line this is fantastic. It works and does what its supposed to. Its lightweight very portable easy to use and does exactly what you need it to do. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a small MIDI controller.

GREAT.....at first

Features:

This is my first midi controller. 25 keys, 8 pads(16 with 2 channels), 8 knobs, Arpeggiator, the only thing that would have made this better is a pitch wheel. Keys feel nice to play, didn't like the pads but that is because i just don't like pads. Really this was an all round great unit....while it worked.

Quality:

I had this midi controller for two months. Now none of my computers can pick up that it's there. I've tried different cables, different computers, even all the USB ports on my computers. I even checked to see if the USB cable that came with the unit was defective, it has started acting weird with my Zoom H2. Windows can't even recognize the device.

I've tried returning the Unit, however, Akai doesn't really make it clear on their website who, where as well as how you return the product. I also had trouble with customer support, which also wasn't very clear either. It's very frustrating that after 2 months and this cost later, i'm left with a paper weight instead of a functioning midi controller.

Value:

This product has been alot of trouble for me. However if the thing would worked right now, i'd be writing a very positive review for you instead of this negative one.

Overall:

Out of the box, this midi controller was great for the money. If the thing kept working, this review would be alot different.

While i can't post links here, search on the internet for "Mpk mini problems". I think that you will find that alot of people have problems with the keys sending information to the computer.

This is sad, i'm sure this was meant to be a great product. I really can't recommend it to you.

Bottom line, this is a great MIDI controller.      I am still having a little trouble running the CD software, seeing as how the keyboard and the software want to do something different every time I try to change something.      But overall, I love this thing.      The mini keys are a bit hard to get used to, but after a week or so, it's a breeze. An Arpeggiator, 8 Touch Sensitive Pads, and 25 mini Keys.      At this Price, you cannot go wrong.Very Sturdy build, I tend not to put my equipment through hell and back, but it has held up since I bought it.You are getting so much for such a little price, I definetely recommend it.

The Best You Can Get In This Price Range

Honestly, this midi keyboard isn't the best you can get, but to start out with, this is amazing. The pads are a little hard to hit, and the keys are tiny and plastic, especially with my hands. But for this price, this is a great piece of equipment. The few features it has work great, even if this is a pretty bare keyboard. For what your paying, there's nothing out there that can match this.

Good Starter Controller

Overall:
This is my first midi keyboard/pad controller, and for the money its a good value. The pads are great and the keys are good if you don't care about weight. The big problem I had is that it doesn't automap to Ableton. I found a map template after a few hours of digging through the internet, and that got it working. Would have loved a 16 pad option, but for a hundred dollars still a good beginning controller.
