The Akai Pro MPK mini is an ultra-compact mini-keyboard with an impressive array of buttons, knobs and pads to provide hands-on performance and production control no matter your location. MPK mini strikes the perfect balance between portability and comprehensive software control by melding together the complete control offered in the popular Akai Pro MPK family with the grab-and-go convenience of the LPK25 and LPD8. With a 25-note keyboard, 8 backlit, MPC-style pads and 8 Q-Link knobs, the MPK mini is the ultimate portable controller to get your music moving.
The MPK mini keyboard is ideal for quickly entering notes and phrases into your computer. The velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately express dynamics, while accessing different pitch ranges is done instantly through dedicated Octave Up and Octave Down buttons. Create sparkling, staccato leads and driving bass-lines in a variety of time denominations and patterns with MPK mini's built-in arpeggiator. A Tap-Tempo button gives you the ability to quickly adjust the arpeggiator clock, which is essential if you're looking to stay in sync with a band. A Sustain button holds notes after releasing your hand from the keyboard allowing you the opportunity to easily pound pads and twist knobs, with no pedal required.
MPK mini's 8 backlit, velocity-sensitive pads are based on Akai Professional’s MPC line of iconic music production stations. Great for firing one-shot samples and sequencing drum patterns, you can use the pads to send note information, MIDI CCs, or even program changes. Pressing the Bank button will quickly toggle between 2 banks of pads giving you access to 16 pads in total. Additionally, the MPK mini has 8 assignable Q-Link knobs to control virtually any parameter in your software.
MPK mini works plug-and-play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to your favorite software programs. The included software editor lets you quickly map MPK mini's controls as well.

This has 25 Keys 8 Pads Great volume control, USB plug in, Octave control, Appregiator, 2 Pad Banks, Easy to use sustain button, and very easy to set up and program to your computer. Not to mention extremely lightweight and portable.
This has been a fantastic addition to my home studio. Lightweight easy to use and i have yet to have any problems whatsoever with this great machine. My one and only concern that im not in LOVE with is the keys could be a little heavier other than that the pads are great volume control great and is very easy to use.
For the price especially this is a very great efficient device that will help you alot. Its very easy to use and for what your paying its the perfect price.

If the piano keys were a little bit bigger and the piano was longer than it would be a pretty good MIDI. Don't use it for Fl studio use it for ableton or logic

I think that this is an excellent product, that can be used when on the road. I especially liked how it applied to percussion, though it took me a little bit to figure out how to program the pads. It is especially useful to have the keyboard close to the pads, so it expands your the soundbank you can easily control. I would still prefer to have a full size midi controller, but for travelling, it fits easily in a book bag, and it is easy to take on the road.

I actually bought this for my boyfriend who loves creating music on the computer. it was a rough start because he couldn't figure out how to get the keyboard input into the program he had, but after some tinkering he was creating away. Great buy!

The only issue I have with this product is that note repeat is missing from the pads. However you can get note repeat from the keyboard keys if you select only one key in arpeggiator mode. What a bummer!!!!

At first I was extremely frustrated with the mapping of the pads and such, but soon after figuring out what seemed to be the most simplistic fix I quickly fell for this Midi harder than ever before. I am a novice when it comes to this stuff, but even hardened musicians I called to help couldn't seem to figure it out. Really all that needed to be done was start up the MPK software first/Load your preset/close program/open Ableton, FL, or which ever software you prefer. (this is the method that worked for me, may not work for other programs) I would like to also point out that this Midi, for being just a controller for on the go production, is a must have for any novice/aspiring or professional musician out there. If you wanted you could even score a whole soundtrack for a movie, game, etc. if you had the drive time and kits, this device is seriously AWESOME.

As other reviews state, this product is great! It is made by akai professional, so it is not just a toy. This item is very fun to work with because it gets you the tools you need from a midi controller. You can map the knobs to work as a pitch & modulation controls, for those that need them. The pads work as triggers and switches to open up more functions from you DAW.
So, in getting what you can from this machine, the possibilities are there. My only negative note is the mini-USB on the right hand side is very sensitive. I got the coverage for three years so I won't have to worry about it. Mine became so loose that the vibrations and movements created during use caused item to loose the connection from my Mac. The lights would flash on and off. This is why I had to exchange for another one. They are currently on back order, so maybe they will fix this issue. A larger sturdier connection will resolve this issue. I will update my review once item is back in my hands.

This is a responsive unit. No Pitch or Mod Bending, but you can assign 1 of 8 Control Knobs to perform those duties. Keys are not weighted, but have a great spring and sensitivity to them. This unit is very well rounded and has 4 banks of programs that it can hold at a time. You are able to modify a program not in current use and upload it, immediately making it available for use.
Unit is light. The mini usb port on the unit feels a little use. Can be of some concern for those who plan on traveling with it often. I personally keep it in my studio and only disconnect the male-end going into my computer and leave the mini plugged into the AKAI.

If you're looking for something for portability and space, especially if you're a beginner, once again; you cant go wrong with this. I was pleasently surprised by the quality.
I recently got this as a new addition to my "portable studio" that im working on, and I was pleasently surprised, though there are some issues;
one is the mpc pads, these are barely mpc pads, oh, they work, and are pressure sensitive, but the responsiveness aint that great, meaning you have to sort of actually hammer on them to get any sort of sound, if you're familiar with using drumpads, then you might dig them, they do take some getting used to though. The keys are also pressure sensitive, usually this wouldn't be a problem but- they aren't weighted, which makes it sort of awkward, though the response on the keys is way better than the response on the mpc pads, so dont worry about it.
all in all, for the price? this is an excellent controller, but also keep in mind that getting it to work with ableton live 8 and other versions is sort of a pain, but there are maps you can download off the internet, so its not THAT big of a deal, this is more of a problem with ableton than anything.
good build quality, great portability, excellent for the price, just a few minor issues that really stem from my own personal preference, you really cant go wrong for 100 bucks.
Great value, I've been able to get a lot more than I expected out of it.
