Akai Professional

Portable performance and production with MPC technology and Ableton Live Lite software.

The Akai Professional MPK25 is a portable keyboard controller with MPC production controls. Based closely on the MPK49, the first keyboard ever to feature MPC pads, the MPK25 scales down the keyboard to 25 keys but retains the utility, capability, and flexibility that made the MPK49 one of the world's hottest keyboards. Its smaller, more portable size makes the MPK25 the perfect travel companion. Its small footprint can fit in your lap on the couch or on a plane, enabling you to create tracks whenever inspiration strikes. All you need is your laptop and the MPK25.

Creative Input
MPK25 combines a 25-key keyboard and 12 genuine MPC pads. The keyboard is semi-weighted and features aftertouch for expressive melodic control. The MPC pads are pressure and velocity-sensitive to capture every nuance of your creative concepts. The pads can access four banks of sounds, so you have 48 samples at your fingertips with the touch of a button.

MPK25 places dedicated transport controls within your reach for easy control of some of the most important tracking and editing controls. The MPK25 has modulation and pitch-bend wheels for expressive musicality, and two assignable footswitch inputs enable you to connect an expression pedal or other continuous controller and a footswitch for momentary controls like patch change or start/stop.

Q-Link Command
One of the most important input devices on an MPC is its Q-Link assignable control section. The MPK25 gives you twelve virtual knobs and four virtual buttons that are assignable to control nearly any software parameter. You can control two different parameters per Q-Link thanks to the knobs' dual-bank selection.

Expressive Engine
Two technologies pioneered in the MPC series and built into the MPK series are MPC Note Repeat and MPC Swing. These note-modifying features can be heard in many of the most popular tracks over the last two decades. MPC Note Repeat is a capability that enables the MPK (or MPC) to automatically play a rhythm pattern, such as 16th notes on a hi-hat, for accuracy and speed of entry. MPC Swing is sometimes referred to as "the heart and soul of hip hop" because it turns perfectly aligned sequences into human feeling time alignments. You can specify exactly the degree and timing of swing you want to apply for the perfect feel.

On top of these MPC technologies, the MPK25 has its own arpeggiator, which enables you to create quick, creative riffs in seconds. MPK25 also has MPC Full Level and MPC 12-Level on its pads, as well as Tap Tempo and Time Division so you can nail the tempo, timing, and dynamics exactly as you hear them in your head.

Complete System
The MPK25 is a MIDI controller that sends its MIDI values over USB. It is bus powered, so all you need to connect and power the MPK25 is the supplied USB cable. Because it is MIDI compliant, the MPK25 works with most MIDI recording, sequencing, and performance software for musical performers from keyboard players to producers to DJs. It's even a great option for VJs.

The MPK25 comes with Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition, one of the most popular and powerful performance and production software programs in the world. Ableton Live Lite enables musicians to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise, and edit musical ideas in a seamless audio/MIDI environment.

Good but some annoyances

First of all let me say that if you are comparing this to the M-Audio or other similar devices, don't bother--this is the one to get in my opinion.  The build quality just feels so much more solid there is no contest.  The keys require firm pressure and have a nice springiness to them.  (They don't feel anything like piano keys, but that's not the point.  These are synth keys.)  The mod and pitch wheels feel solid and satisfying.  Same with the knobs.

There are a couple of annoying things you should know.  First, the default mapping in Ableton Live is weird--if you are using an instrument rack say, the first four macros are controlled by the top row of knobs, but the second four macros are controlled by the bottom four knobs on the MPK25, not the middle four.  The middle row by default controls volume for tracks 1-4.  Very strange.  I think it's probably just a mistake.

More annoying in my opinon: The knobs are endless encoders, but ***you can't use them that way with Ableton Live***.  They send NRPN messages, which Live does not support.  So you have to use pickup modes, even though you just bought a controller with endless encoders!  Very annoying, but tolerable for home use.  I would not want to mess with pickup modes in a live performance situation.

MPK25 keyboard is great quality for the price

I bought the MPK25 keyboard/USB MIDI controller for my boyfriend and he really likes it. He has experience making hip hop instrumentals on an MPC, so he was able to rip it out of the box and use some of the features immediately.  You can listen to some of the beats he's made on SoundClick.com/JBMG. He likes that it is easily compatible with every software program he uses and loading VSTs is easy. Also, the arpeggiator is a very useful tool for making more complex melodies.  It doesn't chop samples like the MPC 1000, so it's helpful to use them both together. Also, the pads on the MPK aren't quite as good quality as the ones on the MPC, but still good.  Overall, it's been a great addition to his studio equipment.

I'm predominately a bassist and am a major gear nerd when it comes to bass equipment. I've never felt inclined to write a review until now. I picked up an MPK25 to start messing with ableton live to incorporate into live sets. After a ton of research I felt the MPK25 was the best all around option for me. Not only does it have pads but its also a keyboard. I was a little hesitant because I had no clue what was involved in setting up, getting started, etc. I was a complete newbie when it came to MIDI and any sort of production. However, I had this setup running out of the box and after a brief learning curve of Ableton I was laying out ideas I've had in my head for years. You can virtually do everything with this little guy. I highly suggest this over any ableton controller because its sooo much more versatile. The pads, keys, and knobs are all completely assignable. The 25 key keyboard can become any instrument you want it to be via the instrument racks in Ableton. Again, Im in no way any expert, I've had this for a week, but for any newbs out there looking to get their feet wet as I wanted to, the MPK25 has been the exact tool I've been looking for. Awesome job guys.

Overall this thing is a tank, it does what I need it to do flawlessly. The keys feel amazing and so do the pads. If someone is complaining about the pads not being sensitive enough it is because they do not know how to use the built in custom interface. You can not only change the pads sensitivity but set it to be only at full level or spread out over the 12 pads. You could buy this controller and make anything any big shot producer is making as long as you know your software and plugins.

This thing has every thing you could need. Pads, keys, everything. Not only that but it is 100% customizable, even down to the midi signal something sends.

Sturdy, well built. Exactly what you can expect from Akai.

For the price and what your getting, its cheap. In my opinion it is the best 25 key midi you can get for the price.

This is a great keyboard awesome features but 2 Major flaws  Flaw # 1  The Pads response times sucks bad on this you have to hit the pads extra hard to get a response for your drums  Flaw # 2 The keys feel very stiff it does not feel semi weighted as the Axiom Pro Series these are the two most important features the mpk failed to deliver on if you want more features get this keyboard if your looking for a better feel for the piano keys and better sensitive drums pads get the Axiom Pro
