OVERVIEW

SD sample recorder and player.

MPX16 is an advanced sample player with sixteen backlit velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads. With it, musicians, producers and performers can trigger sound samples stored on standard SD or SDHC cards. Insert the SD card, assign its contents to any of the MPX16's pads, and go. At home in the studio as part of a producer's rig or on stage as a solution for triggering critical sounds, MPX16 is a compact sampling powerhouse.

In and Out
While the hyper-responsive trigger pads and backlit display make tapping into your sample library a simple task, the integrated audio inputs empower you to add to it. Two ¼-inch (6.3mm) jacks let you connect your studio gear or other sound sources to the MPX16 for sample capture. Onboard editing tools provide sample trimming and pad assignment for immediate synergy into a production or performance. Use the headphone jack to monitor your captures, or send the audio to a mixer, monitors, a recording interface, etc using the ¼-inch main outs. A built-in mic provides immediate sample capture for those times when inspiration strikes; a dedicated Record Gain knob ensures you get it right.

USB & MIDI
MPX16's flexibility goes beyond pad-triggered audio playback and capture. The full-size rear-panel USB port lets you drag & drop samples from your computer and even use the MPX16 as an SD card reader/writer. The USB connection also provides a pipeline for MIDI data, enabling sample triggering from your DAW or computer-based sequencer. A 5-pin MIDI input means SD samples may be triggered from any MIDI-enabled gear such as keyboards, pad controllers, synths and electronic drums. A 5-pin MIDI output lets the MPX16 function as a dynamic pad controller. Layering wide-ranging sound sources during live and studio performance just got easier.

Akai Pro File Loader software (free download), managing computer-based samples and moving them to the SD card is intuitive. This software also converts sound files into .WAV format for seamless playback on the MPX16. Samples may also be edited from the onboard sample processor; tuning, pad groups, envelopes, sample trimming, panning and volume are tweakable right from the MPX16's top-panel controls.

Ready to go
MPX16's compact footprint means it is at home on a tabletop, music stand, lap, tray-table or in your backpack en route to the studio. Solid Akai Pro design and industry-leading pads ensure it stands up to the daily use you expect it to see.

SD and SDHC cards sold separately.

Comments about Akai Professional MPX16 Sampler:

If you're looking for an old school, MPC. This isn't it.
There's no sequencer. But this is a quality product.
It's a real hardware sampler and looper with good MPC style pads.
Since the current MPC models are meant to be used in connection with computer software,
And I don't want to use iPads or personal computers when I make music,
This is a viable alternative. The sound quality is great. It's easy to use.
It has standard MIDI IN/OUT as well as stereo quarter inch audio in/out.
However, editing samples is extremely painstaking without a waveform view.
I recommend this product. But it's not an old school MPC.
It's best for Loop-based live performance and jamming.
I also noticed some latency issues when syncing to my other gear via MIDI.
But a firmware update could solve that.
I doubt that AKAI will offer an update for sequencing.
But you may want to grab this if you prefer hardware over software.
AKAI doesn't show any signs of returning to the old school MPC.

Extremely underwhelming and frustrating Sampler

Comments about Akai Professional MPX16 Sampler:

This is the first sampler I have ever purchased, and it was one of the most frustrating experiences I have had with any hardware yet. The controls are fairly self explanatory, but the actual functionality leaves much to be desired. If you want to adjust any settings, expect to spend at least 15 seconds literally just turning knobs to get them to where you desire. The sample editing capabilities may as well not exist, as they are extremely imprecise and tedious to use. Additionally, after only a couple days of use, the MPX16 corrupted the sd card in it, which also made the device useless as an sd card reader. I was forced to buy a separate sd card reader just to get the device working as it should again. Also, I was unsuccessful in ever getting the MIDI IN to function at all. The MIDI OUT worked fine, but seeing as the MPX16 lacks a built-in sequencer, I was hoping to at least be able to out-source that function, but was never able to. The MPX16 mostly works as advertised, but came with hidden frustrations that have made me question buying another AKAI product again.

    Beware the data crasher

Comments about Akai Professional MPX16 Sampler:

This thing does what it says, but is super sensitive to electrical jolts, so data must be backed up all the time. I wish I had gotten an Electribe Sample instead. I have been using it, but the constant data failures make it more a toy than a serious part of the studio. Akai does not respond to information requests, and seems to care little for their customers.

Great Idea, good value, well made, and if your persistent and have a lot of time you may get it but be ready for lots of surprises, like downloading your own samples and a manual that leaves out important info.If your not patient or intuitive you can get lucky but have lots of free time and maybe a fresh turkey to prepare and cook overnight to help pass the time in between the intimate hours you two will share ,There are some bugs that are overcome by trial an error but one that has no apparent fix I suspect can be fixed by a firmware update is the loop mode on some pads for some reason forgets it is looped after a power down then back up,No response from Akai after 3 weeks, All in all it Brills Pretty good after you get past getting spanked,

Comments about Akai Professional MPX16 Sampler:

Wanted something to store and play samples we use to kick off songs when playing live...and this does that. In an ideal world it would have onboard storage so you don't need an SD Card and the limit of 48MB total size loaded may be limiting for some (which is why it only gets 4 stars). For us, it does what we want it to do...at a reasonable price.

Comments about Akai Professional MPX16 Sampler:

There aren't too many products like this on the market anymore, affordable hardware drum machines have been outnumbered by software controllers and hardware units that are just too expensive. This unit is a lone wolf but does everything it says it does and does it in a fairly straightforward fashion. The SD card slot allows you to put in your own samples and basically create your own drum machine. Worth the purchase if you need something like this in your setup.

All in all it's a great little sample drum machine that stands alone no need to hook up your pc. Sounds good easy to use. Long load times for samples and kits. So be ready to entertain between mixes with maybe some pre loaded music.
