The thing with velocity that seems to be bothering some other reviewers is that you have to set it where you want it with the data slider. Press the MIDI button on the left, then press the key that has "velocity" written above it, then press the key that has "enter" written above it, and you can then set the velocity response using the data slider. After setting it, you can repeat the process for setting volume or whatever, just press the key with that parameter written above it.

I find the Alesis to be completely usuable, very durable, and a great value for the price. The keys are definitely springy, and very unrealistic feeling. It's not what you'd want to use for a piano sample library. It's great for synths, although there are no real time controls except for the data slider, the mod wheel, and the pitch bend. Also, it's just plain cumbersome having to use the keyboard's keys to enter MIDI information, but once you're used to it, it becomes second nature.

If you can live without assingable controls or weighted keys, it's hard to beat this.

When used strictly as a MIDI input device, the Alesis Q49 is a high quality keyboard with a nice touch at a very attractive price. However, I hoped to also use this as a practice piano at my computer desk... bad choice! There is about a half-second latency that is problematic and makes this impractical for use as a piano (you hear what you played 3 or 4 notes ago). Also, the included software is WAY too complex with a very steep learning curve. Like many programs today, it can perform a bazillion functions, but is cumbersome and overly complicated on basic tasks (and I have a background in computer design).

The Alesis Q49 is a really handy size with a nice, simple layout and a great feel. I wish it would have worked better for my needs. Instead, I exchanged it for a larger and more expensive Yamaha NP-11 Piaggero with MIDI in & out -- a marvelous portable piano that also takes care of my basic MIDI needs. Unfortunately, this Alesis wasn't the keyboard for me.

I use it for demos mostly. The feel is definitely a keyboard, not a piano. It has all the ports you would want.

Really like the keyboard feel on this. More so than the Maudio which I founf the black keys very very stiff. Alesis keys have a good feel.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I wanted a basic keyboard controller to drive a midi sound module without requiring a PC. All hardware, no USB. This one has a 5 pin midi out and can take 9V ext. power. It does what it's supposed to. Midi markings above keys make it easy to navigate and communicate with my Alesis sound module. Experienced musician but novice using controllers and in the middle of the learning curve.

There is a 2 or 3 step operation for some functions and no lcd, readout so you have to know what you want to do and remember what you just did.

It seems to be reasonably well constructed considering it's all plastic and all the keys and appointments works as intended and advertised.

I like that there is a semi-tone key transpose function alongside the octave up/down function which makes the 49 key range more versatile.

I got it during the Black Friday sale, so I saved a few $$ It was just what I was looking for in a standalone budget controller and has all the functions I need for now.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I use the Q49 with Presonus Studio One 2 for midi and virtual instruments. Installation in Windows 7 Professional was as simple as just plugging in the included USB cable. The unit was immediately recognized by Windows and easily added in Studio One. It comes bundled with free downloads of Ableton Live 9 lite and Ignite, which should get you up and running if you don't already have recording software. Also included are some very nice sounding and useable pianos from Sonivox. I purchased this unit as a SDOTD, but it is well worth the current price. If interested I would purchase soon as I suspect this unit is being phased out by the QX49. As for the latency some are experiencing, simply lower the buffer of your interface until the desired results are achieved.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

Bought this when the Q25 proved to be to small and I really didn't want to use the space needed for 66 or 88 keys. Overall it works well with my Sonar midi software and it works well with my Native Instruments software and that was why I bought it.
It was stupid easy to set up - plug the USB cable into the computer - job done!
The only thing I would do differently and this is only if I were into EDM or Beat making is to buy a controller with assignable sliders or dials. I don't need that complication as I generally just use it as a keyboard.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I found this controller OK for my needs. I'm not a profession keyboard player and I'm using it as an input to a software sequencer on a laptop.

I did notice a slight velocity problem similar to what some of the previous reviewers have mentioned. On one key I have to press down slightly harder to get it to trigger the note. It only happens on one key on mine and I didn't think it was serious enough to return it.

For the price I paid (I got mine on sale for 80) I would recommend it as a basic MIDI input controller. It's definately more for novice players on a budget than professionals.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I bought this keyboard to use with Garage Band and I must say that it works great. I use it on my iPad and Mac. I have not experienced any latency issues at all. It is said that "you get what you pay for" and this keyboard is not top of the line and I am sure the company does not make that claim. But, for the price it works for me and I am completely satisfied. Since I am a beginner in using MIDI and DAW, this keyboard is perfect. I recommend it as a good starter keyboard.
