The thing with velocity that seems to be bothering some other reviewers is that you have to set it where you want it with the data slider. Press the MIDI button on the left, then press the key that has "velocity" written above it, then press the key that has "enter" written above it, and you can then set the velocity response using the data slider. After setting it, you can repeat the process for setting volume or whatever, just press the key with that parameter written above it.

I find the Alesis to be completely usuable, very durable, and a great value for the price. The keys are definitely springy, and very unrealistic feeling. It's not what you'd want to use for a piano sample library. It's great for synths, although there are no real time controls except for the data slider, the mod wheel, and the pitch bend. Also, it's just plain cumbersome having to use the keyboard's keys to enter MIDI information, but once you're used to it, it becomes second nature.

If you can live without assingable controls or weighted keys, it's hard to beat this.

When used strictly as a MIDI input device, the Alesis Q49 is a high quality keyboard with a nice touch at a very attractive price. However, I hoped to also use this as a practice piano at my computer desk... bad choice! There is about a half-second latency that is problematic and makes this impractical for use as a piano (you hear what you played 3 or 4 notes ago). Also, the included software is WAY too complex with a very steep learning curve. Like many programs today, it can perform a bazillion functions, but is cumbersome and overly complicated on basic tasks (and I have a background in computer design).

The Alesis Q49 is a really handy size with a nice, simple layout and a great feel. I wish it would have worked better for my needs. Instead, I exchanged it for a larger and more expensive Yamaha NP-11 Piaggero with MIDI in & out -- a marvelous portable piano that also takes care of my basic MIDI needs. Unfortunately, this Alesis wasn't the keyboard for me.

No idea what the others are talking about...

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

A great value-conscious keyboard. I have had no issues with velocity as of yet, I have no idea what the other 3 reviews are talking about. If you go look on other online shops (an extremely popular one in particular that I probaly can't mention) you'll see that the reviews are totally different than the ones here. Look for second opinions, don't trust these 3 adjacent bad ones.
It gives you a perfectly great midi controller keyboard with added bonuses such as octave up or down, a data entry slider and many other adjustments that I haven't even bothered with or needed.
One of my keys is barely squeaky, but everything else is perfectly fine. It's clearly "cheap" keys, but the response is good enough for me to do any midi job I want.
At this price, the value is amazing. It's a good-sized keyboard with all your standard keyboard features at a low, low price.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I haven't had any velocity problems, if you set it up with your computer's software right, it shouldn't be a problem. If you're looking into this keyboard, it's not for studio use, but this is perfect for giving me the amount of keys I need, it's simple, it works, it's durable, and doesn't take up alot of space in my dorm room. If you're looking at getting a good deal on it, I wouldn't be afraid to pick this up again.
Data entry slider, up/down octave buttons, a midi select/shift button, pitch bend and modulation wheels, and the keys. Also, it comes with Ableton Live Lite Alesis Edition. That's all she wrote.
Sturdy, feels light and on the cheaper side, but it can take a beating, and still work fine, which is what counts.
I got it on sale in-store on black friday and saved lots on it, so it's been worth it.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

This keyboard has, hands down, the worst velocity response I have ever witnessed. Some keys are hypersensitive, and others require serious force to even trigger. It is laughably bad.

    Velocity is terrible!

    By TheReviewer

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I bought this controller (Alesis Q49) about a month ago (I sent it back two days after it arrived). I was looking for a compact controller to control VST programs, enter MIDI into a sequencer, and for entering notes into Sibelius. I also wanted it to fit on my desktop. Well, it fit.....But, you couldn't play a continuous tune on this thing to save your mother's life. The velocity is terrible! My middle 'B' would barely send a midi command when pressed very firmly. Next key over was blaring and much stronger than it should have been. Just terrible. Unusable really. I highly recommend looking for something else.

    Good budget choice.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

This keyboard doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but what it does have works great. If you are looking for something to learn on then this is your best bet for sure. If you are a professional then you might want to spend some more money on something a bit better. I have used it to record some parts and it works, but you might want something a bit more precise. Overall, you just can't really find something with these features and quality at such a low cost. My only regret is not buying one with more keys. 49 just isn't enough.
This keyboard doesn't have all the functions of it's larger cousins, but what it does have works well. The mod and pitch wheels can be a bit touchy. The velocity sensitivity is also a bit touchy, but I'm surprised how well it responds for being a cheap unit. I haven't had a chance to use the MIDI out port yet, but the USB works flawlessly. No need for any special software. Just plug it in and it works with everything I've thrown at it perfectly.
It's all plastic design makes it look cheap, though it feels solid and well built. It's got good weight to it and I'm sure it will take a good beating.
For good velocity, USB, quality craftsmanship, ease of use and the few other features this unit has for such a low price, I just can't think of a better deal.

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I use the Q49 with Presonus Studio One 2 for midi and virtual instruments. Installation in Windows 7 Professional was as simple as just plugging in the included USB cable. The unit was immediately recognized by Windows and easily added in Studio One. It comes bundled with free downloads of Ableton Live 9 lite and Ignite, which should get you up and running if you don't already have recording software. Also included are some very nice sounding and useable pianos from Sonivox. I purchased this unit as a SDOTD, but it is well worth the current price. If interested I would purchase soon as I suspect this unit is being phased out by the QX49. As for the latency some are experiencing, simply lower the buffer of your interface until the desired results are achieved.

Only a slight velocity problem on mine.

      By JohnKing67

      About Me Novice

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I found this controller OK for my needs. I'm not a profession keyboard player and I'm using it as an input to a software sequencer on a laptop.

I did notice a slight velocity problem similar to what some of the previous reviewers have mentioned. On one key I have to press down slightly harder to get it to trigger the note. It only happens on one key on mine and I didn't think it was serious enough to return it.

For the price I paid (I got mine on sale for 80) I would recommend it as a basic MIDI input controller. It's definately more for novice players on a budget than professionals.

What a great deal! I got it on sale , but it would still be a steal at the normal price! Took all of 10 seconds to set up, Sonar recognized it immediately and the velocity(contrary to a couple of reviews I saw here) works exactly as it should! Seems to me some folks should make sure they know how to use their software before writing a bad review. The controls work very intuitively. Also Musicians Friend is awesome, and one of the very few retailers out there that still know how to take care of customers and get repeat business! Recommended to anyone on any level.

I needed a full size midi to add piano and string etc. I'm a guitarist not a keyboard player so This works great. Using with Studio One. Got it on a sale at a great price and couldn't pass it up. I read about velocity issue etc. If you are overly concerned about velocity and touch etc... you would be buying something in a different price range. If you want access to laying down midi tracks and have fun this is a great deal. I was able to plug in and map many devices in Studio One with no issues. Simple to use, does what it should and its not going to break the bank

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I wanted a simple controller to use on my computer music desk, so I didn't have to roll back and forth between my keyboard rack to key simple things in. I had another product, from another manufacturer, that was complex, with memory slots for configuration, sample triggers, and a built in speaker. It was annoying to say the least - too much extra stuff I didn't need. I got this one on sale, and it's exactly what I needed. Decent synth action, can be used with a sustain pedal, enough full-size keys to actually be useful... I wasn't happy that it did not come with a power cord; yes, I could have hooked it up by USB, but I have a MIDI interface and prefer to have everything go through that. And it's kind of a weird 9v adapter, despite having at least 10-12 of them around my studio, none of them fit the pin size and I was forced to purchase one online just to use my new board. That was disappointing, and cost me more money and a couple of lost days.
