      Kurzweil

A stage piano/controller that is powerful, versatile, lightweight, and affordable!

Kurzweil's SP4-8 is the modern successor to the best selling SP88/X, which famously combined world-class Kurzweil sound quality with previously unheard of affordability and portability. The updated SP4-8 also makes available the same sound set featured in the hugely successful PC3 line of professional keyboards, in an instrument that is slim, lightweight and extremely easy to use. Once set up the SP4-8 leaves the smallest possible footprint, which means that you, not your keyboard, will be in the spotlight.

With a user interface that's intelligently designed to make things as easy for you as possible, the SP4-8 provides the features that are most important, right where you'd want them. Create splits and layers with the touch of a button (up to 4 zones); select presets and setups from easy to access category and program buttons; quickly adjust effects parameters; everything is laid out so that you can be up and running and making music right out of the box.

While the SP4-8 is the most affordable keyboard that Kurzweil currently offers, no compromises were made, no corners were cut, when it comes to its sounds. Featuring 128 hand-picked programs taken directly from Kurzweil’s acclaimed PC3 line, the SP4-8 delivers the best of the best in every category of sound, with the famous Triple Strike Grand Piano, classic electric pianos and lush strings and orchestral instruments, along with top notch basses, guitars, winds, brass, percussion and drums.

Kurzweil even included some of their signature KB3 organs, with all KB3 parameters accessible via external MIDI control. Furthering the sonic pallet, the SP4 can also load programs created on the Kurzweil PC3 and PC3LE series keyboards (within the limits of the SP4's DSP resources); additional sounds will also be available for download on the Kurzweil website. Its 16-part multitimbral architecture makes the SP4-8 a powerful tool for writing and recording music in conjunction with an external sequencer or Desktop Audio Workstation.

The SP4-8 also features dozens of the PC3's professional quality effect chains. Everything from flawless concert hall reverbs and crisp delays to powerful distortion and amp simulation effects add another layer of depth and realism that can only be found in a Kurzweil. The most relevant effects parameters have been mapped to the SP's Timbre knob, so you can customize your sound without having to dive into menus or manuals.

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

As a lifetime Kurzweil user and fan, I was deeply disappointed with this particular model and returned it immediately.

There are a number of salient deficiencies, including poor quality piano sounds (for Kurzweil!) weird sound patch volume differentials that are way too dramatic. (I understand that there is some volume variation, but have never seen anything like this.)

The action I also did not personally favor. I am increasingly inclined against keyboard manufacturers trying to simulate the complexity of a piano by simply making the keys heavier -- the "velocity curve" is not the same for key presses, feeling both artificial and requiring considerable finger strength (and likely strain).

The button interface, for the humble offering of a few hundred sounds, is ridiculously anti-intuitive. It's way too easy to get completely lost when you simply want to pick a new sound patch.

What I wept over was the discontinuation of the original Kurzweil SP-88, which had a marvelous 30 lb version with a snappy little piano sound and very nice light-weight keys.

I'm sure some of their other new model lines are just fine, but this one is junk.

I sincerely hope Kurzweil releases a better low-end keyboard with lighter-weight keys, 100 solid HQ sounds, and a massively easier interface.

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

This is a followup to my very negative review from 11/1/13. I had received two defective units and gave up on the Kurzweil in favor of a Korg Chrome. While amazingly capable, the Chrome was not only way more than I needed but it was difficult to do some basic things quickly and easily the way the Kurzweil does. After a number of calls to Kurzweil Tech Support, I determined that it was just a fluke that I originally got two defective units. There were no known issues with it of the type I was experiencing. I was prepared to sell the Korg on my own and try a third Kurzweil, but to my delight and amazement, Musician's Friend was willing to take the Korg back way, way beyond the normal return period, for just a minimal restocking fee. The new Kurzweil is working flawlessly and is so much easier to use for what I need. Major kudos to Musician's Friend for bending over backwards to see that I was completely satisfied!

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

I bought the keyboard as the primary stage piano for the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus, for its weighted keys and harp, organ, and piano sounds, primarily. These sounds are amazing. What I didn't realize is that the keyboard also has, right out of the gate, a complete set of percussion sounds including timpani, marimba, snare, toms, and cymbals, as well as strings, chorus, brass, bassoon, etc., etc., etc. And these sounds ARE amazing and realistic. In addition, the various synthesized sounds and sound effects, including sliding from note to note, are incredible. I'm a classical musician and, with this keyboard, I could start a rock band. My son and I have had a blast playing with the amazing variety of sounds on this keyboard. Bravo, bravo, bravo.

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

I really wanted to keep this keyboard. Loved everything about it EXCEPT, too much pressure on the keys results in static and clicking in the audio output. At first I thought it was my church's sound system but then it persisted when just connected to headphones. Sent it back requesting Musician's Friend test unit before sending a replacement, which they did. Second unit was OK for a couple of days and then problem resumed. Saw a reviewer of this model on the B&H Photo website complaining of same thing. To their credit, Musician's Friend was willing to substitute a more expensive Korg unit as an even swap. Kurzweil has to fix that.

Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano

                        By Paul Foss

                        from Maine

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

Realizing that the SP4-8 is marketed as a preset stage piano, it should be noted that the feature set is somewhat limited. What is important is that the sounds are good, consistently B+ or better. If you value tweaking of sounds, this is probably not the keyboard for you. The interface is a little balky, taking from one to four button presses to change sounds. The ability to create spilts and layers on the fly is a plus. As a former full-time musician, now a week-end warrior, it suits my needs for GB, rock and standards. This keyboard is robustly built, yet surprisingly light for a weighted action (39 lbs.). The two-piece wall-wart/A.C. cable could be a problem, however. It seems a little flimsy. Also, make sure you have both halves of it before you head off for the gig!

Comments about Kurzweil SP4-8 88 Key Stage Piano:

I purchased the SP4-8 because I own Kurzweil piano modules and the piano sounds are great. After using it on gigs for about three weeks I returned it. Thank God for musicians friend's 45 day return policy! There were 2 problems with the piano. First, there was a ground hum. Second, the instrument sounds are not that good. I tried every possible remedy and finally got it so the ground hum was not so loud. I contacted Kurzweil customer support and went back and forth with them several times. I asked if the power cord and transformer might be defective. Even though I told them what I'd tried to do to eliminate the hum they recommended everything I had already told them. The piano sounds were ok but not as good as the sounds in my older micro piano and micro ensemble. The organ sounds were kind of average. The strings, marimba were good. The vibes were not good, the accordion sound was average. After working with it for a couple of weeks I realized I was not happy with the piano so I opted to exchange it for a Roland RD-300nx.
