For theremin lovers and electronics junkies.

This Moog theramin kit comes with everything you need to make a theramin. With the unfinished wood cabinet and prebuilt circuit board, you'll build a theramin. Several wiring points require soldering. Power supply is included.

One of the oldest electronic instruments, the theremin is the only one known that you play without touching. Moving your hands in the space around its antennas controls pitch and volume. The Etherwave is an adaptation of inventor Leon Theremin's original design.

Reproduces a 5-octave pitch range and reliable spacing between notes for sophisticated playability. Antennas are nickel-plated 3/8" brass tube and cabinets are furniture-grade hardwood. Can be fitted with an adapter for mounting on a standard microphone stand and is designed for use with a musical instrument amplifier.

The make-it-yourself theramin kit comes with 2 videotapes: Clara Rockmore: the Greatest Theremin Virtuosa, which includes performances and a conversation with the world-renowned thereminist, filmed in 1976; and Mastering the Theremin which includes 6 lessons with Lydia Kavina, including exercises designed by Clara Rockmore. Lydia is one of the few professional thereminists in the world and a master teacher on the instrument. This is the main resource you need for learning to play theremin or for improving your technique.

Comments about Moog Etherwave Build-Your-Own Theremin Kit:

This is fun to assemble if you like that sort of activity. The assembly manual could have had a few more pictures, but it is very detailed and well written. You need to read it carefully. Basically, the biggest task is to attach the front panel to a 10-pin connector and then plug that into a header on the circuit board. The components are high quality and worth the price.

I would have to say that this instrument is extremely difficult to play properly, but it can easily and immediately produce cool, quality sounds and effects. I've never played violin, cello, trombone, etc. but would think that the Theremin is similar, yet probably more difficult, in that it requires you to pick notes out from complete outer space. If you want to develop your ear, or freak out your neighbors, then this is your instrument.

        Big disappointment

Comments about Moog Etherwave Build-Your-Own Theremin Kit:

This is a kit to assemble your own theremin. Unfortunately, the directions aren't the easiest to follow, the parts (i.e. wires, etc.) were often too short for the distance they had to cover. I did manage to assemble it but it doesn't work. So I have a $300+ piece of art that doesn't actually play. Pay the extra money and get one that is already assembled. On the plus side, the customer service people at Moog (not Musican's Friend) were very kind and helpful, but this is not something that can be fixed over the phone. I wish I could bring it by somewhere so they could tell me which part is assembled wrong/or broken.
