The "plug-out" synthesizer.
The SYSTEM-1 is a culmination of Roland's SYSTEM 100 and now almost mythical SYSTEM 700 synthesizers. Born in the '70s, these modular and semi-modular synthesizers are heralded to this day for their flexibility and character of sound. Over the years these two legendary instruments have been used by some of the most forward-thinking artists and recorded onto countless classic tracks, an iconic sound from decades ago.
Meet the SYSTEM-1, a synthesizer probably unlike any you've encountered before. Like its predecessors, the SYSTEM-1 breaks new ground with remarkable flexibility and access to a vast palette of synthesized sounds with the bold and unmistakable character associated with Roland synthesizers for nearly four decades.
At the heart of the SYSTEM-1's sound is Roland's Analog Circuit Behavior technology (ACB) which was used to carefully analyze every aspect of the original instruments analog circuits and then faithfully recreate them down to the finest details. This technology fills the SYSTEM-1 with a fusion of beautifully classic and utterly modern synthesizer tones.
The SYSTEM-1 can control and even host software recreations of classic Roland synthesizers. That's right. The SYSTEM-1 can control plug-in versions of now legendary Roland synths, and those same plugins can be hosted in the SYSTEM-1 itself - with no computer required. You can even switch between the SYSTEM-1's internal sounds and those of the hosted plug-in. Roland call this exciting wizardry "Plug-Out".
You'll be excited too once you experience the authenticity of the SH-101 softsynth, with the SYSTEM-1 providing an intuitive and fully automatic one-to-one control interface that just works. Let's be honest. Who could make a better plug-in version of a classic Roland synth than Roland? And the SH-101 is just the beginning.
The SYSTEM-1 not only sounds amazing, but it also has a totally innovative design with performance ready controls, quality construction, and a dizzying array of lights and knobs and sliders.

Comments about Roland AIRA SYSTEM-1 PLUG-OUT Synthesizer:
I discovered my 1970s era Univox MiniKorg in the back of a closet and rekindled my love fat analog sounds. However my ole MiniKorg is limited. I needed something with more oscillators and knobs. My style of music is wide but I gravitate towards progressive rock with layers of electronic keys. I wanted some polyphony if possible, standard sized keys, lots of knobs and a classic analog layout. I bought the SYSTEM-1 because it checked all of my boxes and the plug-out capability was a nice bonus.
I love my SYSTEM-1. The layout is straight forward. I've had to refresh my knowledge of basic analog synth concepts. It's getting easier to create a specific sound. I had a devil of a time creating a good brass sound at first.
The knobs feel wonderful to turn. The SYSTEM-1 keys are almost full-sized. Not ideal but very playable compared to mini keys. I have a terrible arpeggiator on another synth I have but this one is easy, diverse and fun. There are a lot of bonus knobs for sculpting sound, color controls for each oscillator, tone knobs, sub oscillator, and the crusher. Reverb and delay effects are a nice bonus. The filter section has a lot of control as well. All of these knobs provide instant gratification as you play (you can probably tell I like knobs!)
Now for the plug-outs. A plug-out allows you to purchase vinatge Roland synthesizer models. One plug-out, the Roland SH-101 is free to download. That is freakin awesome! One wanring...being a novice to DAWs I was disappointed to learn that you need one to load the Plug-outs. Roland should make that clear in their marketing fluff. Roland support told me to download a trial version of DAW software. I used the trial version of Cubase Elements in order to get the SH-101 plug-out installed. I'm just getting started and I'm finding the way SH-101 controls are mapped to the SYSTEM-1 a bit confusing. But it does make some fat bass sounds!
Cons...not too many. No after touch. Only 8 presets. The green LEDs look cool but they are so bright it is hard to read the knobs in the dark. Some people have commented that the SYSTEM-1 presets suck. Who cares! You have a cool analog synth with lots of knobs. You'll have the presets replaced with you own fat and nasty patches in no time!
