Comments about Roland Lucina AX-09 Shoulder Synthesizer:

I was very excited to get my Lucina, however, I have been disappointed in several aspects of it. Of course, one problem is my own fault, I bought it to use in a band that didn't work out and am now using it in a band that has different requirements that the Lucina cannot deliver.

First, some good stuff about it: The structure and action are great, in my opinion Roland does a great job with their keys, and the Lucina is no exception. It is lightweight, which is a requirement for a keytar, and is very portable with the backpack made just for it. I carry it on my back, my amp in one hand and my gig bag in the other, making unloading a single trip.

On to some of the drawbacks: the Lucina was obviously designed more as a lead instrument than for accompaniment. While all the lead instrument sounds are fantastic, the accompaniment sounds such as synth pads are very limited. Also, the piano sounds are horrible, thin and weak. If they weren't going to put halfway decent ones in they should have just left them out.

Back to some good stuff, but with drawbacks: The octave change buttons are great, but there aren't enough keys - if I try to do any kind of run, I always end up running out of keys on one end or the other. The mod bar is great, and can be set either for modulation or as a pedal, however, the ribbon controller needs more room for your hand.

A couple of other problem I ran into is the configuration of the connectors for the cables. If you run it off battery as it was intended to be, you only have one cable, but with the way the connectors are set up, the instrument cable pulls out very easily and if you hook more than one cable to it, it makes a mess. I think it would have been better if Roland had put the cables in a recess with a strain relief connector to run the cables into.

For my final thoughs, I would highly recommend the Lucina if you are planning to play mostly leads and can deal with the drawbacks. However, for any other use, I would recommend looking for a more suitable keyboard, unless you use it as a MIDI controller for another keyboard as I ended up doing with mine.

Comments about Roland Lucina AX-09 Shoulder Synthesizer:

i played on this thing at a music store. I've been wanting a shoulder synth but i played on it and its alright. its basically like just an add on instrument. i mean i would buy it and pry use it for like one song so if you want to save money just get a cheaper synth and put strap pins on it. THe sounds aren't bad they just arent amazing. it's like a meh.
