OVERVIEW

Just turn it on, aim, and record--no cables and mics to connect.

The Roland SP-404 Power Sampler with FX surpasses its predecessor by offering battery-power compatibility, a CompactFlash slot, and a built-in microphone for quick, stress-free sampling sessions. Add extra color with the many effects built into this little Roland powerhouse.

2 Sampling Modes

Record audio directly into the SP-404, or import/export industry-standard WAV and AIF files via CompactFlash card. The Roland SP-404 also provides a Lo-Fi sampling mode, so you can scorch, roast, and crunch your audio if desired.

Realtime Pattern Recording

The SP-404's easy-to-use sequencer allows up to 8,000 notes to be recorded in real time. For perfect playback, pattern data can be quantized to the note value of your choice. Up to 24 patterns, each 1—99 measures long, can be stored in the internal memory simultaneously. On CompactFlash cards, you can save 96 additional patterns with 8,000 notes of recording capacity per card.

Quick Sampling & Editing

The Roland SP-404 can house up to 24 samples in memory simultaneously. On CompactFlash cards, store up to 96 samples; if you use a 1GB CompactFlash card, sampling times can be as long as 772 minutes in Lo-Fi mode, or up to 386 minutes long in Standard mode. The SP-404 provides sample-editing tools for setting start and end points, adjusting levels, and more.

29 Onboard Effects

Twist, bend, and animate your audio with the SP-404's expressive effects, and manipulate them in real time using the front-panel control knobs. Shake the walls with Subsonic. Drive the dancefloor wild with the BPM Looper (grab a region on the fly and loop it) and DJFX Looper (change speed and reverse audio to get a turntable scratch-like sound). Effects include reverb, flanger, delay, Voice Transformer, distortion, filter, Slicer, Isolator, Vinyl Simulator, and more. Best of all, the Roland SP-404's effects can be applied to multiple samples simultaneously or live input signals. Select the multieffects directly by pressing the MFX button and the corresponding pad at the same time.

Onboard Microphone & I/O

Use the SP-404's mic input to capture audio with an external mic, or just aim, point, and record with the built-in mic! Sample pre-recorded sounds with the line input jacks (L, R) and sample. For playback, the Roland SP-404 offers line outputs (L, R) as well as a headphone output. A MIDI input connector is provided for controlling the SP-404 externally.

CompactFlash

The SP-404 comes equipped with an industry-standard CompactFlash slot that accepts cards up to 1GB. Import WAV and AIF files into the Roland SP-404 Portable Power Sampler via CompactFlash, and vice versa.

This little sampler contends with some units costing three times as much. Some may say a bit pricey at that and slightly toyish looking, but considering the capabilities, the new SP-404 represents an amazing value. Anyway, toys are fun. This is all that and much more. Don't judge a book by it's cover. The sounds I got going gave me goofy ear to ear style with unconcious head bounce! Can't not stop messing with it. Expanded abilities to run as an independant FX box, internal resample capability, new pattern sequencer, high fidelity sampling, smooth realtime control over 24+ radical usable/quite good effects, and battery power. Basically a semi no-brainer. I have used an SP-303 for years, the older sibling, anyone coming from this point of view will be thrilled with the new feature set. Those new to it, will probably be deep in a matter of hours. Absolutely worth buying the 1 gig compact flash expansion card, hardly an option, needed. Bought one (about 75 bucks) and installed before I even powered up, glad I did. Load it up...groove, a box that decidedly rocks.

This is a decent sampler with tons of memory. You cannot trigger a "closed high-hat" type drum sample to close an "open high-hat" type drum sample. I've never owned or seen a rhythm-oriented piece of gear that omitted this feature. It's a weird omission, and it makes the sp404 unusable for me.

With the SP in my hand...

DJ'ing for me is a hobby. I love music, instrumentals, breaks, beats, melodies, scratching and mixing.. So when I saw the SP404, I said this may be the perfect companion to go along with my Technics. And I was right! The SP404 is simple enough to take it out of the box to sample and make some really nice beats with effects. At the same time, it can keep you in the manuals trying to figure out some of its more advanced features.Overall, it is an excellent product. Seems to be well made and with solid construction. My only complaint is you cannot retrieve the samples that are installed by default when the product is shipped. You'll have to make your own backup copy if you are going to erase them.

Good Enough 4 Me

By Moe Moe

from South East Georgia

I have owned this unit for about 6 months and so far it's given me a big boast in creativity. For the bread, it's a good unit. The only drawback (4 me)is, you can't purchase a CF Card with sounds already loaded but other than that, I'm good with it.

Great Overall Unit

Although it may look like a toy, this unit well surpassed my expectations. Once I read the manual over a few times, which was definitely the worst part, it was easy to use and within minutes I was sampling, recording and looping patterns. The SP-404 plus a decent synth and a recording station would be the perfect combo. Besides, the thing is the size of a small textbook, and has a built in mic and optional battery power. What more could you ask for. The only drawback is that you will very soon need to buy some CF memory cards, which really isn't that bad.

Dj Frantuc

Amazing piece of gear for this price range. Its got a thick, fat sound. Kicks sound especially good. I'd dare to say even better than the kicks off my MPC2K (when I had it) The effects section is great, very different and chopping up your samples is cake. The sequencer takes a little getting used to...and if you dont have good natural rythim you may want to sequence externaly. Great little box.

This sampler worked great until a month later it stopped working. Turned the power off and then back on and nothing! I suggest only using batteries with this product.

One day I was in the store checking out the display models they have for each sampler out on the display rack when I came across the Roland SP-404. I have to be honest, I expected less coming from a little machine like this, but if you read in between the lines, this thing can do tricks most machines three times the price range can do. The my personal favorite feature on the 404 is that you can make your samples lo-fi. In other words, you can adjust the sample rate of the sample as well as the bit rate, making it sound like you just came out of the 1980's with this little machine. Unfortunately, I didn't buy it, but that doesn't means that I still won't.

Proud owner for 4 months, Well I agree with most on how great this sampler is. Before this one I owned the SP-202, This was a 'Big' step up for me. My tracks are on "Fire" compared 2 before, thanks to more memory and effects, the sound quality is off the chain ! Still finding new things to do with it too. I highly recommend for hip-hop sampling.

This Machine is Sweet

By Verdict-BArdl

from Seattle

I got the sp-404 around christmas last year and I am very happy with it. It has everything you need and the price is great for what its capable of. I would have liked to see a way to stretch the end of a sample so that it sounds smoother when it loops. There is also some digital noise or something when you move a sample's tempo, even just by a few bpm's. The effects aren't great either but the fact that they are there in the first place is sweet enough. It really is versatile with my live DJ gigs and I would recommend it completely to anyone who is looking for a first sample or a sweet addition to their DJ set.

great sounding effects and easy to use

By ////

from jacksonville, FL

this is the first sampler i have ever purchased and i couldn't be happier with it. you can get some other worldly effects with it and the resampling feature is great for making completely original sounds. ive been experimenting with plugging all sorts of instruments and electronics into the mic input and throwing some effects onto them with great results. for sure a fantastic tool for any boundary pushing artists.

Sampling ain't for rabbits!

By jajaman

from Somerville, MA

I had a very different purpose for the Roland sampler than many who post reviews or purchase this equipment. As a bassist in a rock band, I wanted to add an experimental edge to our portfolio and incorporate pre-recorded samples triggered via MIDI foot pedal. I had no aspirations to use the Sampler for DJing or bringing down the house "with my beats." No sir. For my specific purpose, the sampler has been perfect, and can be controlled easily via any MIDI pedalboard. The product was exceptionally easy to learn. After going through the decent manual, I had a firm handle on most of the controls in under an hour, and was recording loops immediately. There is a slight skip if looping the sample (whihc fortunately I do not need right now). The effects are nothing to write home about, and the overall appearence really caters to the DJ.
