OVERVIEW

Samson's Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller was designed to make musical performance and production accessible to everyone. For seasoned musicians and young creators alike, the Carbon 49 offers versatile, yet easy-to-use features in a compact, lightweight controller that's well-suited both stage use and in the studio. It offers you a semi-weighted keyboard comparable in feel to that of pro-level instruments. Its 49 velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately capture the full dynamics of a performance. In addition, the Carbon 49's dedicated Transpose and Octave buttons, as well as its classic Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels, allow you to expand the keyboard and enhance your overall musical expression.

Take control of your music software with the Carbon 49's assignable data encoder and volume slider. For easy editing, players can use the Shift key to adjust up to 14 performance-related control parameters. Also, the Carbon 49's 3-digit, 7-segment LCD displays the behavior of every function in real time. For added versatility, the Carbon 49 includes traditional MIDI Out, sustain pedal input and USB connections.

Staying hip with today's popular and convenient technology, the Carbon 49 features an integrated iPad stand and can be used with your favorite MIDI apps via Apple's Camera Connection Kit. The Carbon 49 can even be directly powered by the iPad.

In addition, it's bundled with Native Instrument's KOMPLETE ELEMENTS software, which offers a vast range of instruments and effects for modern music production, composition and sound design for your desktop Mac OS X or Windows.

Integrates easily with Windows/Mac/iPad digital production workstations.

Comments about Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I had an Akai Mini MPK Mk2 Limited Edition and one of the keys popped off (w/ my pinky!) and it only took 2 weeks to break. The Carbon 49 was a replacement and I couldn't be happier. With nearly twice as many keys as the Mini, the Carbon 49 gives you functionality over cool beat pads. Also, it was a pain to set parameters on the mini using the software provided, however, the Carbon can set simply with the push of a button...on the fly! If you have about a hundred to spend on a keyboard, this is a big first step in the right direction.

Comments about Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I sought out to find a very minimalistic MIDI controller on which to perform synth parts and trigger sounds during band practice and during performances, and Samson's entry-level 49-key Carbon controller is everything I needed it to be. I was also a bit concerned with purchasing this unit, because most reviewers spend more time talking about the iPad-connectivity or even talking about the synth apps they got instead of actually talking about the unit itself, which made me wonder if there really wasn't much good to say about it. Fortunately, that was not the case: incredibly lightweight and compact, the build definitely seems rugged enough to handle varying intensities of performance (be you someone seeking to play soft piano ballads or banging out a crazed performance). People fearing that it might be a gimmicky product made to cash in on the popularity of the iPad need not worry either, it definitely performs well as a traditional MIDI controller as well. A LOT of the negative reviews on here complaining about the dynamics issue should be ignored, it's because the factory default for the velocity curve is set to 4 (which sets the sensitivity all the way to 127). It's literally a press of the edit button and a changed number away from performing perfectly normally, couldn't be easier to fix. In fact, I don't think the parameter-editing interface could be more straight-forward and easy to use in general.

People seeking a more parameter-tweaking-friendly unit will find this unit frustratingly limiting, but anyone just seeking a cheap unit that'll give them 49-keys will find this to be a winner.

Comments about Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I bought this and had it shipped to my son at music school for in room homework use. He is not a pianist. He had a hard time with the included software was unable to get any sound out of it even after going through the intructions multiple times. Finally he just opened up garage Band and then got it working via that. He is very happy with it now but I think it should be easier to just "plug and play".

Comments about Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller:

For the price, it's pretty good. Not great, but good. The semi-weighted keys offer plenty of resistance. The keys feel a bit slippery, but less slippery than the keys on an Alesis Q49.

I bought this so I could use legacy synth modules like my Korg TR Rack. I was going to buy a Line 6 Mobile Keys 49, but there's no MIDI out on the Line 6, just USB. That's fine if you're using an iPad. But, useless with an older synth module.

For a secondary keyboard this works fine. I use it to trigger pads in my Korg TR Rack. I don't think it would be good for playing intricate piano parts.

The moderately weighted keys are an improvement over the keys on almost any portable keyboard (think Casio or Yamaha.) If they were a little less slippery it would put it into a higher class.

It's really easy to use. The octave up and down buttons are handy. Likewise the transpose buttons are right where they need to be. Best of all the pitch bend and modulation wheels are in the right place. Nobody wants to look for these when they're needed. They just want to reach.

The off white color is a nice change from the usual black fare.

There's no power adapter. But, any cheap USB power adapter works. The USB power cord is about half as long as it should be. I had to tape the rectangular end of the USB cord to the power adapter so that it wouldn't unplug itself (because the cord's too short.) This is a little ridiculous. These cords cost probably 50 cents to make in China. So, why not a 6' or 10' cord?

        Overall it's good value.

Bought this keyboard for a Studio One and Acid Pro midi controller.
Works great. Plugged in and installed it's own drivers and ready to go.
