If you are looking for a great keyboard, but don't want to pay a lot this is the keyboard for you. I consider myself semi-pro; I majored in music in college, but I don't get to play or perform a whole lot because I work another career. Frankly, I was insterested in getting a keyboard for my own enjoyment, because I love putting together different sounds. Not long after I received the keyboard I was asked to play at a 50th Wedding Anniversary. I was asked to play soft music during the event, popular tunes, as well traditional wedding and sacred. The music I have is written for a soloist and accompaniment, so what I did is record the accompaniment on the keyboard and played the voice part with other sounds. It sounded awesome, people at the event were astounded at the sounds, they thought it was a tape of professional musicians and bands. And I love the touch countrol, gives great exprerssion when playing your solo voice. You've got to here the sweet tenor sax and sweet soprano sax-they're great!! You won't be disappointed with this buy. I love it!

One of Yamaha's best

By Sparky070156

The Yamaha's dgx-505 has to be one of the best keyboards out on the market for them. Great sound, and just fun to play on. Good keyboard to start on. I would recommend this keyboard to any one who is looking for a new keyboard.

Amazing quality for the price.

By teacher-l9g4H

I was very pleased when I played the keyboard for the first time. I thought the quality of sound was excellent for the price. I also am enjoying the ability to play my accompaniment disks for my piano students. The only criticism is not enough volume and somewhat uneven touch.

a good, affordable piano

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I'm a college student, and I was looking for a digital piano to use in my new apartment, since I obviously could not take my old piano. The DGX-505 is turning out to be a great replacement. It has a full 88-key keyboard, has a built-on stand to help save some money, decent speakers, and a lot of effects. The only problem I can think of is that the keys are a little light, but you get used to it.

Quite impressed

By Anonymous

I first bought this piano and it was amazing. It sounded AWESOME, the stand was good and sturdy, overall lay-out of the buttons were good. Then I started to play it. The touch sensitivity on this thing is way off, it is much lighter than most. I own a cheap 100 keyboard and let me say this one blows it out of the water. The keys also scratch very easily, lay off the gliss. Very good piano for the interemediate player, I would recommend.

This is a very useful instrument. I've been using this keyboard in my band for the last two years. I feel that it gives me great inspiration. Sounds are very good and as well as the features. Look for "Desi's Cooch" pretty soon!

This keyboard has great sounds. We bought this keyboard and hooked them up with some Behringer speakers, and this keyboard sounds so good in our Church. The members in our church were so amazed of the sound and quality this keyboard had to offer. If anyone is looking for a non-expensive keyboard that offers great sounds, just buy this keyboard and you will be amazed of the quality. (Buy some speakers to go with them, it brings the keyboard to life).

Overall, I believe that this instrument is faily good! The manufactuers did a great job on making the sounds appear to the ears, realistic. It's good both practice and creation. This item lets you recod and playback your music that you create. As far as that is concered, there is very little memory space.

Musicians Friend's Best Kept Secret

By Anonymous

By far the best deal out there for a high quality sound without taking a second morgage out on your house. I am very impressed with the sound and quality this keyboard puts out. The features are outstanding. I use it through a Roland amp that puts the sound across the room with no problems. Highly Recommended! You will not be disappointed. Though I am a professional guitarist this was very easy to pickup and play right out of the case. OUTSTANDING!! Hats off to Yamaha for creating such an affordable masterpiece.

Okay, well..

By Finale

To be honest, I'm working with a DGX500 - which is the same as a 505, minus the smart media option and plus a floppy drive. This keyboard has an array of brilliant sounds, but is not a production station by any means. With no options of looping, and a mere 6 track recording platform, arranging songs was a lot more difficult. I found myself more often than not using Fruity Loops. (Don't sleep, haha). Anyway, if you're a producer with hopes of sampling and synthesizing/producing and arraging tracks with intricate patterns, go with a Triton. This keyboard has great sounds and can be fun when learning initial steps of production, but no further.

Great keyboard; Great Value!

By West-KThvc

from Birmingham, AL

This keyboard is packed with features and quality that should satisfy anyone just starting out or someone, like myself, who has been playing for many years for personal enjoyment at home. Virtually every orchestral and percussion instrument is included. Most are sampled very well, while a few are just average. All of the piano and organ voices are top notch; the acoustic piano voice is breath taking. For home enjoyment and early beginners, this keyboard is the way to go. The speakers kick out enough power for my home environment; there's volume control and headphones for those times when you can't disturb others. I've played on this keyboard for friends/family and no one ever complained that the piano didn't sound real or sounded funny; maybe with my playing, but not with the sound quality. The piano is not heavy, easy to set-up on the included stand, and best of all, never needs tuning. There's a chord dictionary built in and displays the notations right on the display. No more wondering how to play a G#7 chord. Some very minor draw backs - keys are not full action, as on acoustic pianos or higher priced keyboards, and no dust cover was included, though Yamaha offers one as an accessory. No regrets at all with this purchase.

Will keep you occupied for hours...

Beware: This is no Clavinova. Oddly enough, we had a family friend's Clavinova stored at our house. So, when he took it back and I decided to buy this to replace it, it was a little lacking, but also half the price. This doesn't have the range of the Clavinova, but it does have as many sounds. Along with that, the demo diskette will humble you. It demos songs as though being played on the keyboard. The pitch-bend was also something new, though, that the Clavinova didn't have. Once you learn how to use it, it adds a lot. With 88 keys, it's a great value for keyboardists who don't want to spend a grand on a full-sized keyboard.

Best In Its Class/Price Range

By Bigdc1953-ZjKuD

See all my reviews

While many other players may gripe that the touch on this piano is not as heavy as an acoustic piano and various other electronic pianos, I prefer the slighty lighter touch. While it's not the real light feel that most organs and many synthesizers have, it won't work you to death, either. As a visually challenged player, I find the button and knob layout a lot simpler than most electronic keyboards, including many other Yahama models. Sound quality of this keyboard is surprisingly good through its onboard speakers, but if you really want to experience the true range of sound, hook it to an amp/speaker combination that will give more fullness, preferably a 15-inch woofer and a high-frequency horn/tweeter setup. It takes time to go through all the voices, but the effort is worth it because this keyboard should handle any kind of commercial music style. The 135 accompaniment styles are nice; even nicer is tha first beat of each measure blinks RED, a built-in music lesson unto itself. Transporting the keyboard may pose a challenge if it's carried in a compact car, but you'll never find a lighter-weight 88-note unit that can do what this one does.

Wonderful Potential

Lots of potential for beginners to professionals. I was shocked to learn the power cord was a separate purchase- part of the "Survival Kit". Yeah, you'll need it. Great keyboard, lots of realistic sounds and growth potential.

Fantastic Keyboard, PC integration lacks however.

By Coaltongue

from NY

Like others have said, this is an excellent keyboard at a fair price. Others have tried to guess what I paid and consistently grossly over estimate. Fantastic piano sound reproduction. While the included stand is in fact particle board, it is of MUCH higher quality than I was expecting. It really looks great sitting in the corner of any room. Others have also commented on the keys. They are ever so SLIGHTLY weighted, but no, they are not fully weighted keys and do not accurately recreate the feel of a real piano. The sustain pedal is a nice touch, however the lack of a power supply with the package is a huge let down. Only other complaint is the way the laptop integrates with a PC. While you can directly hookup the board to a PC to work with MIDI, the only way to transfer user created songs from the keyboard to the PC is by using a SmartMedia card. It would have been really great to just be able to install the supplied software and then transfer the files to from the piano's internal memory to the PC w/out the SmartMedia card. Regardless, still a fantastic keyboard that should be on anyone's short list in this price range.
