OVERVIEW

A universe of sounds from a decade of MOTIF.

The Yamaha MOTIF is among the most respected keyboards of the current century. Through its many reincarnations, it has always been among the most revered instruments in professional stage and studio keyboard performance. The Yamaha MOXF8 is the latest iteration of this noble tradition, and stands again as a model of sonic excellence and technical functionality. The MOXF8 series combines a MOTIF XF sound engine and Flash memory expandability, a MIDI keyboard controller with extensive DAW and VST control, USB Audio/MIDI interfacing, onboard sequencing, and an extensive DAW / VST software bundle.

The Instrument
The MOXF8 features an 88-key GHS keyboard that provides authentic, realistic keyboard response—much like the playing feel of an acoustic piano—with a heavy touch in the bass register that changes to a lighter one in the treble, and a natural gradation of touch in between. Category search mode features 16 different instrument categories, each with its own sub-categories, so getting the sound you need is a fast and intuitive process. With Performance Creator you can easily build up layer or split performances with a single button press. Start with a voice you like, and then press LAYER to have the MOXF choose a suitable layer sound. Press SPLIT to call up a left hand bass sound automatically, and then go to DRUM ASSIGN to access the huge variety of built-in rhythm patterns available.

The Sounds
Yamaha has updated the popular MOX Series with the latest MOTIF XF technology by adding more sounds, more effects and even a Flash board option slot. Because it's compatible with MOTIF XF and MOX data, the MOXF has a huge collection of sound and sample libraries and optional software available right out of the box. Expandable, portable, affordable, and compatible with a wide range of other products, these instruments bring MOTIF music production power to a whole new generation of musicians and producers.

The Sequencer
MOXF features a built-in sequencer that lets you produce high-quality music without the need for a computer or any other external devices. This powerful tool offers both real-time recording, which records your performance data as you play it, and step recording, which is suitable for recording precise phrases or other difficult passages. You can even record particularly creative performances directly to a song or pattern simply by pressing the REC button.

The Effects
Yamaha’s proprietary VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) technology simulates the effects of vintage EQs, compressors, and phasers at the circuit level. This technology has enabled Yamaha to improve the quality of the instruments in the MOXF by modeling the sonic texture of vintage analog compressors, EQs and stomp boxes right down to their component transistors and resistors. The MOXF also puts the high-quality effects found in Yamaha's industry-standard digital recording consoles at your fingertips, as well as the award-winning REV-X reverb found in the SPX2000. It even comes equipped with vocoder effects, allowing you to connect a microphone to the MOXF’s A/D input terminal and apply effects to your voice or create stunning harmonies.

FEATURES
88-key Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) action keybed provides realistic keyboard response
Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) technology simulates vintage EQs, compressors, and more
Advanced computer integration makes the MOXF the center of your music production studio

I use the product mainly in my home studio. It is possibly the best keyboard I have ever owned. And through the years I have had many. Just my Yamaha Keyboards, I have owned a PSR-730, PSR-3000, Tyros1, Tyros3, MOTIF XF-7, MOX6, and now the MOXF-8. I must say, The Piano Sounds both Acoustic and Electric are Top Notch. When playing I cannot get over the sound and the feel of the keyboard, I just can't get enough of it. I would certainly recommend the Yamaha MOXF series to anyone looking for a great sounding, lightweight, low-cost keyboard. Whether, you are in a band, or have a home-studio, or just want something to play at home. This is the keyboard for you.

The concert grand piano sound was not a constant pure sound in some of the keys (c#3, d3, d#3).
There was a subtle oscillation or metallic overtone -- not sure what to call it. I did not notice it at first, but later as I was listening
to individual keys. I returned it without any problems the next day. I think I will try the Kawai MP7 next, for which every key has been sampled individually.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I ordered this scratch and dent and it was good and broke. 7 screws were missing from the bottom and there was a hole big enough to stick my finger in and something was rattling on the inside. I never plugged it in, put right back into box and returned. I shipped back on the 7th of May and MF received it on the 12th and I still have not been notified that they received it. I called on the 13th and 15th to find out the status. The exchange still has not shipped, I should have asked for a refund and ordered from Sweetwater.

As a casual player I only use the MOXF8 in my home. After 3 weeks of use I'm still impressed with the built in sounds and performances. I thought of buying the MOX8 but never liked the feel of the keybed. The MOXF8's keybed is certainly an improvement. I also setup Cubase AI 7 on my laptop and have recorded a few simple songs. Including Cubase with the MOXF8 is certainly a bonus.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

The MOXF8 has a great soundset, excellent weighted action, and is very light and portable for an 88 key keyboard. The ability is add in additional flash memory greatly expands the soundset, and there are a number of additional samples and sounds (especially the free CP1 piano files from Yamaha) that really add to this keyboard. Programming has a bit of a learning curve, but well worth it.

A bit challenging at first, but so worth the effort to patiently figure it out. . I've struggled with this wonderful machine, coming off PSRs most all My playing life...and this machine allows me the freedom to be ME and not settle for "Canned" band backups. I am the creator and this let Me be just that ! I love it. well worht the effort to learn it. it wont let You down ! but , have patience.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

Been in the music business and a artist for many years, started out with early Roland gear and on to Korg, for many years i looked away at Yamaha even though i was turned on to the DX7 years back, finally got my hands on a Mox6 and the samples and the in your face sounds that were so adapted to today's groove got me hooked, now i am a full yammy ha ha guy, I like the ease of use and the samples don't sound so watered down with effects as we see with other keys, also you have so many variations depending how deep you want to go with it than just sequencing tracks, lastly the XF engine at your finger tips is a winner with the price point putting you right into it even though some corners were cut with those faders many of us complained about, but weight wise its a blessing on your back hauling it to shows and it packs it punch as i see many Krono's players waiting for over 2 to 3 minutes for it to boot up to play, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and Yamaha did a great job with this..

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I bought the MOX8 on the stupid deal of the day. I had no idea of the MOXF8 at the time. I wish I had known. The MOX8 has a more spongy action and doesn't feel like the yamahas I know. That's because with the MOX8, they were going more light weight for their selling point. The piano sounds and organ patches are still the same, just lighter action. It's not unusable action, just not firm like yamahas I have owned in the past. I still use it every gig, so ,it's not junk by any means. It sounds great and has the USB function for recording. I have used it for recording and gigs and it has never failed me. Lots of good synth patches and organ patches. The recording function and drum programming is also very easy. I would recommend this for any one looking to get a good piano sound and not break your back packing it around.

Very impressed with this keyboad and I've yet to explore all of the features. A much needed upgrade with onboard sounds so no more digging through software for sounds! Giving the price, I understand the plastic construction but still disappointing coming from a my old keyboard that had an aluminum casing. Nice keybed action with Fatar type quality. Only one minor hiccup in setting up with my audio interface but I found the answer on Yamaha's Facebook support page.

I use this product in my personal studio and at all church events. It is used
in my Jazz Trio with my Hammond Organ. The pianos and guitars are very
expressive . All strings and brass plus the complex sounds are very authentic.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I have say that the keyboard action is much better than I expected coming from such a light-weight keyboard. Having owned Yamaha KX-88, Kurzweil 2600 and even the Motif 7, I've had my share of back-breaking experiences.
The MOXF8 fits perfectly in my home studio as well as live performance. I already own Cubase 7.5, so the controller connection to Cubase is a nice perk. The A/D interface was not as quiet as I though it would be, compared to the Motif S/PDIF I/O. But workable for recording direct audio to Cubase tracks versus tracking MIDI. Overall, very please with the entire package. Could be the best musical investment made in the last 30+ years.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I'm a TV/film/advertising composer who's using the MOXF8 as my primary kybd controller. I've had it for only a few wks. So far I'm very happy. There's so much I like about it. There's only a few cons. There's only 44.1k sample rate. For a media composer everything is 48k so this is a bit of a hastle. For the most part everything else is truly first rate and for the price you can't beat it.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I went to a music store, tried out about 20 keyboards, and the MOXF8 was definitely it for sound and feel.
Excellent: string bass, hammer dulcimer, classical guitar. Very good: piano, electric piano, organs, string and wind ensembles, saxophones except alto. Bad: steel string guitars, solo strings. IMO the synthesizers are of no use unless you play classic rock.

The user interface is cumbersome and requires 400 pages of manuals, but is usable. If you stick with the defaults the controls for modifying the sound are almost useless.

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

This is my second Yamaha keyboard. The first one is still working great. I wanted to have two for versatility and performances, as well as a backup in the event that some unforseen accident occurred with the other one. The voices are pretty nice. I think the brass voices (particularly the trumpet) are perhaps the weakest voices (with regards to sounding just like the real thing). But, they are still very useable. Overall, I would definitely tell anyone that asked that they wouldn't go wrong by owning one. Thanks Yamaha!
