Realistic sound and dynamic expression thanks to Yamaha multilayer sampling technology and graded hammer-action keys.

The Yamaha P-155 digital piano offers professional-quality sound with Yamaha's legendary piano touch. Whether you're practicing at home or away, performing solo or in a band you'll have top-shelf Yamaha digital piano technologies at your fingertips. This Yamaha digital piano has advanced sampling functions and the ultra-expressive Graded Hammer (GH) keyboard. Now you don't have to choose between portability and piano quality.

Hand-crafted Pianos, High-quality Voices
To ensure the finest grand piano sound for the P-155, Yamaha went straight to the source: Yamaha's finest 9-foot concert grand, a handpicked CFIIIS. Next, a master piano technician painstakingly tuned and regulated the CFIIIS to sonic perfection. Then Yamaha applied their Pure CF Sampling technology to accurately capture every aspect of the CFIIIS sound, keeping post-processing to an absolute minimum to maintain sonic integrity throughout. The result is a truly authentic grand piano sound with powerful, dynamic bass, warm mid-range, and crystal-clear highs.

Layer upon Layer
Yamaha's Dynamic Stereo Sampling (DSS) technology employs 4-level piano samples to enhance expression. Depending on how hard you strike a note, you will hear one of four piano recordings on each and every key for an unprecedented level of dynamic range and tonal expression. Playing softly doesn't simply lower the volume; it produces the quiet recordings of piano notes. And likewise, playing more forcefully triggers separate samples at different levels.

Ascension to Detail
If you close your eyes while playing a grand piano, you'll find its sound is a bit more complicated than note-on, note-off. Yamaha has gone to great lengths to capture these sonic artifacts in the P-155. Their meticulous efforts include recording a felt damper coming to rest on a vibrating string when a note is released (Key Off Samples), or reproducing the sound of the open strings that wash over your performance when using the damper pedal (Stereo Sustain Samples and Damper Resonance).

A Touch Above
When you look inside a grand piano you'll see different-sized strings, which require different-sized hammers with require different weights. The keyboard of the P-155 uses Yamaha's GH (Graded Hammer) technology to reproduce the true feel of a grand piano keyboard action, with heavier touch in the lower keys, lighter touch in the higher keys, and subtle gradations of weight and response throughout. Thanks to the input of concert-level, professional pianists during its development, the GH keyboard features superb balance and remarkable consistency. Performing or practicing on a GH keyboard properly develops and maintains an artist's technique for making the transition between P-155 and an acoustic grand.

Perfection Made Practical
As a full-featured digital piano, the P-155 gives you all you need for practice, playing, and performance. It has an internal high-power, two-channel (12W + 12W) amplifier with high-performance speakers built in. This lets you and your audience hear the authentic sounds in their full glory. Is your audience on another continent? Share your musical ideas and masterpieces easily with others by recording your performance to any attached USB storage device (not included). Songs are stored as Standard MIDI Files (SMF) and can be emailed to and played back on any Mac or PC.

Comments about Yamaha P-155 Contemporary Digital Piano:

Musicians Friend screwed me on this one that made me waste more of my time writing a review to get it off my chest. First ordering it was full of promises that didn't delivery (gift cert wasn't applied). Called back to have it applied and was told I'd get 15% off the total as well - never saw it. Still waiting on the 150% price match guarantee - we'll see what happens. So far...1 hr on phone between being on hold and such. Rec'd the digi piano and there is a stuck key (maybe a restock was sent??) and had to call them again. They have to wait until they get this one back and then send another one out. So I'm out a couple hours of time and patience at this point. I always had good things to say about MF to my students and parents alike but looks like they may be going downhill with their support.

As for the digi piano, overall nice digital piano and should make anyone happy. Looks nice, feels solid and has great sound with headphones or other speaker system. The built in speakers sound ok (nothing like headphones) and are more of a convenience feature.

Comments about Yamaha P-155 Contemporary Digital Piano:

This is a great piano with very realistic sounds. It has a lot more useful functions like recording that can be helpful for learning. I got this for my son who is learning piano. He loves it. Besides that, it is portable so we can take it to performances.

Unexpected goodies, much better than less pricey units

    By James George Jr

    from North Shore of MA

Comments about Yamaha P-155 Contemporary Digital Piano:

The P-155 is and does what the literature claims. From my somewhat knowledgable user's perspective I can hear where the unit is "optimized." It certainly sounds more like a real piano - which is what I needed - than say a P-85 or P-95 or similar Casio-type unit. The 4 levels of dynamics work very well from ppp to fz. The damper pedal does indeed bring in a 'singing' effect of the strings as in a real instrument - nice. The surprise goodies are the other instruments on board. Each and all are delightful, though again I wish the wave geeks would really listen to violins - they don't pulse. I like that some of the acoustic and ambience effects are adjustable by using the Function programming. The P-155 does not help me consider a Yamaha Grand (acoustic) piano though because of the optimizing for the standard 12W amp and speakers, and I think because the "electronic wave engineers" fiddled too much with the sampled sounds. Plugging the P-155 into a quality stereo system (which is what I do - thankful for the real output jacks) gets to more of the true nature of the instrument's sound, and I had to do some equalizing (especially lowering the bass) to get it to more closely match the fairly good grand piano which it sits next to and is used with (for 2 piano practice and teaching). Perhaps the Acoustic Grand people should be in charge of the final sound. For the price, it is definitely worth considering the P-155 over a P-95. And, would someone make a pedal that matches the height and spring tension of a real piano - please. Given the current state of technology, Yamaha could probably make an electronic keyboard that is only a piano, and sounds extremely close to the real thing. Yes, it would cost more, but maybe some of us out here need that.
This is a superbly built keyboard - heavier than I expected (that's ok) and even the key sensitivity seems equal across all 88. It does what is supposed to, performing flawlessly. The "Function" section is a little fussy to get used to, perhaps clearer instructions would help, but hooray the functions are there! The key action could be adjusted to be more like a real grand (please), especially extremely fast repetition of the same note (doesn't do that), and did the engineers actually measure the pressure(s) required on a real grand? These might be very minor points for most people who would use this keyboard - I'm just fussy. The action is certainly better than other 'lesser' keyboards.
I waited for a special sale price - everyone should try to do that. It's well worth what I paid for it.

Excellent digital piano, good hammer action!

    By carlos-UGQKn

Comments about Yamaha P-155 Contemporary Digital Piano:

This is our first DP, I must say we LOVE IT. The hammer action is very realistic (even on the heavy side, most like a grand piano). Sound is very good and the touch sensitivity is good too.
