I bought this for my 7-year-old niece a year and a half ago. It would take years to explore all of the features thoroughly. By the same token you can just turn it on and start playing right away, too. The sound quality is surprisingly good for an instrument of less than a hundred dollars. On its own it sounds ok, but I plugged it into a small 10 watt guitar amp and that improved the sound quality ten-fold. The materials seem to be somewhat cheap so I don't think it could take much of a beating without breaking. No way is this instrument of a caliber for live performance or fitting in any professional context but it is fantastic for getting a kid started in music or for a casual hobbyist.

I got this about three months ago and it is most definitely the worst keyboard one could buy. I put batteries in it and the thing died in 10 minutes (yes, they were fresh batteries). The headphone jack also messed up on me about amonth ago (and that is a critical jack if you are trying to play live!!!). Not to mention the left speaker is blown from playing a low note with the volume three-quarters of the way up. Not a good product at all! I would recommend a Casio.

As an experienced guitarist and a beginning keyboardist I love it! The extra features are a bit overwhelming but well worth the learning. I highly recommend this product!

Great Keyboard

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I got this keyboard for x-mas and it is great! I taught myself clarinet, tenor sax, alto sax and thought teaching myself piano would be way harder, but with my Yamaha PSR-172, it's almost as easy as the rest of my instruments! The only flaw is when you press the keys, they are sort of loud. I suggest that you get Piano for Dummies to go along with your PSR-172.

A Fantastic Grand Piano

By OmegaPhreak

from Ruston, LA

If you are looking for a decent-priced keyboard to use for piano style music, get this one. The other voices are nice, but the grand and organ are great! The LCD screen w/staffs is a great feature too.

Awesome keys

As a beginning keyboarder, I have loved everything about the keys I have. And even though I'm new to keyboard, I'm quite experienced in guitar, bass guitar, and a bit of drums, and I know quality when I hear it. Yamaha has built an amazing keyboard for a low cost, and I love every second of playing my new Yamaha!

Yamaha PSR172 Portable MIDI-based keyboard

By Chicago, IL

from Chicago, IL

See all my reviews

The PSR-172 is a great keyboard for the aspiring techno artist or future producer. It has a brilliant virual drum kit and dj selection of voices, and has some features not expected in a low-budget keyboard like this (i.e. MIDI input/output and Amplifier/Headphone jack) but it lacks General MIDI and XG voices and editing. This can be expected in a keyboard such as this, but if the user's experience is past beginner, upon comparison to the bigger, more expensive PSR's and Yamaha's better synths/workstations, it will immediately lose its luster.

great priced keyboard

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This is my first keyboard and for never having owned one before, it was really easy to figure out and play. I didn't need the manual because it says how to simply use the different voices and songs on top. For a first time user, this is a great keyboard for and unbelievable price.

Know what you're getting into

By shreditup5990

This amp was a great price, but it's not anything for professional musicians. It is good for mixing small things and playing to a garage-band setting, but nothing more than that. I would suggest this keyboard to someone who is either just starting out or won't use this full time.
