Buy something else.
Ran it first on a Win XP machine, were it would work sometimes and not others. Now on a Win7 64-bit machine and it won't recognize it on startup. I have to wait for the computer to boot, unplug it from the USB port and then re-connect, then it will work pretty reliably.
Also, the writing on the IN and OUT cables is practically unreadable... embossed lettering on transparent plastic, with crinkled aluminum foil (shielding) underneath. You pretty much have to take a guess at which is which. I've had pretty good luck with Yamaha products in the past and am surprised company management approved this thing.

I own two of the UX16's one I use to interface my Peavey DPM SP to my computer.. I have an M Audio Keystation 88 Pro but it is a direct USB connection so I don't need it for my 88..But for my external Synthesizers, I have two of these interfaces.. It is a hit and miss interface as specified in other reviews...When I want something rock solid, I always revert back to my Edirol UM-1 Interface...I have had the UM 1 for about 5 years and never had any problem with it whatsoever... The UX16 is not very dependable...But its ok for what it is at the very most.

It is hit or miss as far as compatability goes and you don't know until it is too late if the full instruction set is going to be sent/recieved intact. Tried it on various Macs, PCs and inconsistent in every situation. Yamaha needs to issue a full recall on this POC called the UX-16.

This product (verified by Yamaha tech support) is not SysEx Transfer Compatible. Use a reliable midi/gameport solution, or buy a brand where the engineering investment is made for full MIDI compatibility (Edirol).

I had many SysEx issues dealing with this interface. I found Yamaha Support to be limited to unhelpful.I now use Edirol, the product works fine, support staff are helful ...Buy a Supported Product, Edirol.

The first Yamaha UX 16 that I bought worked okay for a day, then started to cause a buzzing noise. The next day, it was not recognized at all by my laptop. I returned it to the retailer, hoping to find a competitive portable USB/MIDI interface at another store. After failing to find an alternative at the other store, I bought the Yamaha UX16 again, hoping that the first dud was a fluke. The second UX16 also worked for one day before giving out.Avoid the UX16.

This thing only works for a short period of time then quits being detectable to windows for random periods of time. Totally unreliable.

I've been using the ux16 for a week now and have not had any problems. I use it with a Yamaha keyboard and Dell desktop running Cakewalk 9. So far so good.
