Complete music-making and recording studio DAW.

Free upgrade to version 6.5 via download upon registration at manufacturer’s website. Reason is an integrated software music recording and production studio that comes with all the instruments, effects and mixing tools you need for writing, recording, remixing and producing great-sounding tracks.

With its generous sound bank and intuitive flow, Reason helps you along in the creative process and is the music software that never gets in your way.

Should you need even more creative options, Rack Extensions expand Reason and let you add more instruments and effects, created by Propellerhead and others.

    About Reason

Reason is an integrated software music recording and production studio with audio recording, million-dollar mixing, and a massive collection of instruments, sounds and effects included for writing, recording, remixing and producing great-sounding tracks.

At the heart of Reason is the virtual rack that builds itself as you create your song. Create instruments and effects and route them any way you want to. Add, delete, replace and tweak. Your rack is what you want it to be. Need more gear? No problem. Choose a synth, a drum machine, a loop player or any device from the Create menu and it will instantly appear in your rack, logically patched into the signal chain. And because Reason is designed to go easy on your computer, you can repeat the process until you're more than happy.

A single key press will turn Reason's rack around, and there you are, in patch cord heaven. Most audio connections are made automatically. When a new device is created, it appears immediately below the currently selected device, and Reason patches it into the system in the most logical way. Repatch by dragging the patch cord plug to the desired connector to build your own sounds — or tweak the included presets.

Each unit in Reason's virtual rack is edited from its own on-screen front panel. All the sliders, knobs, buttons and functions are right in front of you, ready to be tweaked, turned and twisted in absolute real-time. And all your front panel actions — filter adjustments, pitch bending, gain riding or panning — can be recorded and automated in the Reason sequencer.

When you need even more creative options, Rack Extensions come to the rescue. The Rack Extension technology, new in this version of Reason, lets you expand your collection with the instruments and effects your music needs. Created by Propellerhead and other developers, Rack Extensions are full Reason rack citizens, giving you the same fully integrated experience as when using any of the included devices.

For guitar and bass players, Reason comes installed with separate guitar and bass POD® units from amp and cab simulation experts Line 6. With bass and guitar amplifiers available for every single track in your project, you are never short of interesting tones and timbres. As the Line 6 amplifiers are insert effects and don't affect the original instrument signal, you are free to change your amplifier and cabinet settings at any point in time–even after laying down your track.

The powerful sequencer is where you will find yourself doing most of the work. While keeping Reason’s famous ease of use, it still comes with all the editing features you need. An audio channel, sequencer device or instrument gets its own dedicated track, with separate lanes for audio, notes, performance and automation data, opting for a better overview and less clutter.

All sequencer data — notes, automation, the works — is housed in clips; musical building blocks that can be opened, sliced or moved. When a clip is moved to a new location, all its internal data follows right along with it, always ending up exactly where you intended it to. For safe, speedy sequencing. The Tool window is an ever present floating window that provides lightning fast access to those detailed editing functions you use all the time; quantize, transpose, note velocity, note length and legato. Always in sync with your flow, forever adapting to you and your working methods, Reason's sequencer simply gets you there faster.

With the now legendary non-destructive time stretch, you can actually record first and pick your tempo later. And thanks to audio transpose you can even record first and change the key later. Change the tempo of your song, and the audio follows right along. Non-destructively change the pitch with a mouse click.

The fully equipped mixing desk adds a big studio signal chain to all your sound sources. The Reason mixing console's sound and signal processing was faithfully modeled after* the legendary SSL® 9000k analog mixing desk. Flexible routing, full dynamics, EQ, advanced effects handling, full automation and a 64-bit mix bus gives you that big studio sound right out of your computer. And yes, you do get that master-bus compression.

Finding your sound is an important part of the musical process. With Gigabytes of synths, samples, drum kits, and effects, Reason's sound bank is packed with everything you'll need from the start. Want more? Expand your palette with a world of ReFill libraries.

Reason’s legendary flow lets you stay focused on the music and explore your options as you go along. With a completely integrated environment like Reason, you will face fewer dialog boxes, more inspiration and more music.

      Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

For the price you can't go wrong. People have always been complaining about Reason being a closed program but with extensions and refills you can literally do anything. The mixer is awesome. If you take the time to learn this program it can produce amazing results. I only wish that crossfading and editing tiny audio details was easier.

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

While the program is fine the packaging is problem. The outside of the box does not show the version number anywhere except in 4 point type on the UPC sticker. So you may get through the whole install process and realize that not only were you hipped the wrong version you can't return it for the correct one. Thankfully, the upgrade from 6 to 6.5 is free but you still need to download the newer version from Propellorheads. Hopefully you have some good broadband.

The Ignition Key is annoying but not needed if you have an Internet connection. It would be a bit nicer if the key itself was either smaller (it is the same size as a full sized

        WOW....awesome

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

there are SOOOOOOOOOOOO many features within this program.....anything you could possibly need to make a full scale hip hop production.....from the sounds to lay the ground work.....the hit hats and snares to add hype to a track......the horns and synths to add the main line to a track....and limitless drum sounds......then you add all the reverbs and compression effects to go with several vocal applications like tube and echo.....WOW....the complete studio .....and the user interface when laying down your vocals is AWESOME
everything is fantastic EXCEPT the font size is super small....i have the iMAC 27" 2.7GHZ and i can barley read it on that big screen....come on propellerhead, this is the MAJOR complaint of every reveiwer, and now i understand why
best value in a DAW if you are looking to record and produce hip hop

Best music software I've ever used!

        By Jason Ross

        from New Mexico

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

I've been using Reason since Reason 4, Record, and so on up to now. My music has come to life and this software inspires me to write things I never did before. Don't be fooled by the nay sayers. You can write music in every genre from electronic, to rock, to classical, and everything in between, with a commercial sound, provided you know how to produce. You can even master with the Mclass devices. I'll never stop using Propellerhead software. Period.
3 windows: rack, sequencer, and SSL mixing desk. Lots of devices and effects. Incredibly user friendly (once you've learned what you're doing). The Reason sound bank and Refills are full of basses, drums, synths, etc. You won't be disappointed. Guaranteed.
High quality sound. Low CPU usage!
For what you're getting, I'm surprised it doesn't cost more. Propellerhead Reason 6 is like having a multi-million dollar studio in your computer. Make sure you have good studio monitors, headphones, and the right room treatment to get the best experience.

Font size!!! (Or, the lack thereof...)

        By Pascal_h

        from Virginia

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

So I've used Version 5 quite a bit, but not actually Version 6. Reason, PLEASE make it possible to increase font size...FONT SIZE!!!!! After working in an office all day, coming home to try to squint at this .05 sized font is absolutely unsatisfactory. I have no desire to even try to figure out how this works, although there seem to be alot of great features and good functionality. If you can see what's going on, I'm sure it's a good program, but this software just kills my eyes. So, either fix the font or pay for my glasses, I say...
        Cheers

Everything you could want in a DAW

        By Theodore Lenda II

        from New Jersey/California

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

I have tried to find fault with this product to no avail. Incredible "Bang for your Buck" and Musicians Friend had the best price for this item. This is no surprise as I have found that they are the #1 online/catalog retailer in the nation. I would buy this program again and again if I needed to for multiple recording studios. It is an incredible value, however the most important criteria is that it WORKS! I have recommended this to all my fellow musicians, even those who own a earlier version of REASON, simply because the G.U.I. (Graphical User Interface) is so easy to use. Bottom line: Buy this program if you want the best!
I had used Reason 3 for some backing tracks on my 2007 release "Teddy Alexander-[my stage name] 'SONGS of REASON" released in 2007. I was very intrigued by Reason 3, although I was using CUBASE as my main recording platform. At that time Reason had yet to integrate a recording element, instead you could only use it as a slave application [as I did in Cubase] and record via the master application. The fine folks at Propellerhead rectified this with the release of REASON 5/RECORD. Now with the release in September 2011 of REASON 6 [and the discontinuation of the REASON 5/RECORD platform], which integrates recording directly into the program, Propellerhead has finally given the home recording/Small recording studio a single program that takes care of all their recording needs. While the PDF operation manual is 1022 pages long, much of this is pictures/diagrams. The program is VERY user intuitive. Anyone who has used a DAW program will be able to be up and recording in less than an hour. The program has just about every feature for recording/mastering a digital song a person could want. There are far too many features for me to list here [just see the listing of features in the advertisement or on the Propellerhead website]. I have used most DAW recording programs and can unequivocally say that Propellerhead REASON 6 is by far the best I've seen yet. In closing; If you are a musician that wants to record your own music with professional sounding results, get this program. Enjoy, you will be VERY Happy with REASON 6 if you decide to purchase it.
SEE ABOVE-The "Dongle" can be bypassed by registering with Propellerhead and loging in each time you use the program via a internet connection. I am using an ASUS laptop running Windows 7, it has the Quad core "Intel i5" processor, 6 megs of Ram, and a 5400 rpm 650 Gigabyte harddrive. The actual footprint of the Propellerhead REASON 6 program is very small and uses surprisingly few resources while running. My laptop far exceeds the "minimum requirements" listed by Propellerhead as being needed to run the program. My laptop has two USB 2 inputs and one USB 3 input. With only three inputs it really is a benefit being able to run the program without the "Dongle". I use a 25 key M-Audio O2 midi keyboard, a Line 6 UX2 Sound card/interface and the BOSE Tonematch T1 audio engine. They are all "USB" interfaced and there are the three interfaces on my computer. I have had 23 different "recording lanes" open at the same time and my Quad core Intel i5 and 6 Gigs of Ram never got past 50% of "usage".

Very Nice for the Home Recording Studio

        Comments about Propellerhead Reason 6.0:

Great for the home studio, but can be (and is to me) a little overwhelming of all the features that come in this package. You really have to know what everything is (which requires tons of internet learning) to use the full capabilities of this. I am sure they are all this way, but getting there will be fun. I believe it is well worth looking into Reason 6, if you are just getting into starting up a Home Recoding Studio.
I must say in this area, I am quiet overwhelmed at the things you can do. From simple things like sound creation, looping, vocoding to using LIne 6 amps effects, synth, and the newer featires like Alligator (mutli sound splitter).... this has everything you could imagine to create, record and edit your music creations. My main draw back is NOT having enough time everyday to play with everything. I havent even begun to tap the suface of all these features, but I have been able to record voice, guitar, and bass without a hitch. Then go back and add different features to the rack just to play around with the sounds..... I wish they had better YouTube videos to explain stuff, but I guess playing around with it yourself is the best way to learn
For the price, I would say that this is spot on. You get everything you need to record music, mix it or create it DJ style.... Such a step up from earlier versions where you had to buy both Reason and Record to do all this.
For now, it is worth the investment in all the features that this package comes stocked with, and I am sure PropellerHead will do good on keeping things up to date.
