    TASCAM

The easiest, most portable studio yet.

TASCAM's DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio is based on 30 years of easy-to-use cassette Portastudios, updated with four tracks of CD-quality digital recording. Like those groundbreaking Portastudios, a row of knobs set levels and pan instead of a list of menus.

The DP-004 can record two sources at once to the included 1GB SD Card. A built-in stereo condenser microphone makes it simple to record anywhere you go, perfect for concerts, rehearsals and songwriting inspirations. A pair of 1/4" jacks on the rear panel allow you to connect your own microphones or sources. You can even switch the inputs to guitar level for recording.

The DP-004 allows you to build up your arrangement until you've filled up all four tracks. The Bounce feature allows you to consolidate tracks and make room for more overdub layers. Track editing and undo is also available.

Mixing is also built into the Digital Pocketstudio. Once you set levels and pan, record your mix onto a dedicated stereo master track. You're able to transfer your tracks and mixes to a computer over USB 2 for CD burning and sharing online.

Despite its go-anywhere compact design - smaller than a paperback book - the DP-004 is simple enough for students, songwriters and musicians who want to keep their recording process simple and creative.

I've been recording longer than most...through reel to reel, tape cassette, early digital, and up to the present, and I've never had a better sound with less work than with this recorder. As soon as you master your first song, take out the phones, plug in a monitor or your pa system, and be prepared for the magic. The only problem I have found, which has been mentioned, is the LED display. It's not lit, and, for any eyes over 30, you may need a magnifier. I bet they fix this on the next one. If this was lit, and bigger, it would, for sure and certain, be a 10 plus.
For the money, none better. Heck, even for more money, it would be worth it.
Very light and small, but don't let that fool you. The Tascam is sturdy. I dropped it during my first recording session, and it kept right on. Tough little guy. The knobs and buttons have that "thick" feeling....no cheap and fragile.
For this money, you literally have a recording studio in your home...or wherever.

TASCAM would not stand behind their product, and for that I will never by another one of they products again. Don't waste your money.
My unit started glitching while it was still under warranty, and when I called they suggested a hard reset. I did this, and it didn't glitch again for a few months. When I called back they said it was out of warranty, and suggested a firmware update. Did that, and it still glitched. Finally it crashed to where it won't turn on anymore. Called back, and they would not fix it under warranty. Ran around in circles with them, and they agreed to warranty the parts, but not the labor. Refused to pay $40 to have it inspected, and postage both ways. So, now it's a glorified paper weight.

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I already own the DP-008 for multi-track recording. I bought the DP-004 for another reason (not to mention the price was amazing). As a professional musician, I was looking for an easy way to hear myself as I play the sax in a group without lugging a mike, stand, and speaker to every gig. With the 004, I plug in a mike that clips onto my sax and plug in some earbuds to the output. I can hear myself perfectly and it's so small that nobody notices it.

I ve used this Tascam DP 004 for a couple of years I have lots of other rrecording equipment, Reel- Reel @ Adats 1 * track cassett, Tascam 8 track zoom 24 track and others scattered around my studio. I carry the DP 004 in my guitar case to record on the fly. I think it worrks great. I hav eto be careful where I set the built in Mic's so as not to have distortion. I use a stand alone C.D. recorder instead of a computer. I just like it better. I've made some really great C.D.'s Love it I think as soon as I see them on sale I just might buy another one

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I bought the Tascam DP-004 to record the room when my band plays live. I didn't think that was asking a whole lot. I quickly learned how crabby this unit it. First, I use it with an AC adapter, and I noticed if you unplug the unit while it's recording it loses the entire recording! Hours of audio are gone in a snap. I learned my lesson. Now after each recording I carefully press the stop button and power the unit off. That was only the beginning of my troubles.

Next I popped the SD card out and put it in my computer, but noticed the card showed like it was empty. Turns out Tascam stores all audio in a proprietary format, and to get it onto your computer you have to export the track as a WAV file. The export process takes about as long to do as the recording is long, so a 2 hour recording takes about 2 hours to export. Extracting is a long, tedious, one-at-a-time process. It would be much easier if my computer could have direct access to all audio. As inconvenient as it was, it was just something else I had to get used to for this recorder to work for me.

Because exporting was slow, I had some shows recorded that I hadn't gotten around to exporting yet. I plugged it in and began that process. When I came back a couple hours later to see if it was done I noticed the Tascam was off, which was odd. I live alone in my apartment with no pets, so I know it hadn't been touched. When I turned it back on I got "MOUNT ERROR: 0c Please PWR OFF". WHAT?!!! No matter what I did I could not get the error message to go away. If I pop the SD card into my computer, it told me the card was unreadable. Apparently, while exporting a track as a WAV file the unit crashed and wrecked ALL of the data on the SD card. Unbelievable! A Google search quickly concluded I was not alone, and the only thing that could be done was format the SD card, which erases everything.

Ugh!!! This thing is more trouble than it's worth. Do NOT buy this product!

Overall, disappointed in this unit. Low preamp levels when connected to a pro board on REC OUT. Almost had to run wide open. Exporting a song to my PC was stupidly complicated and VERY slow. I've been using a ZOOM Q3 and was spoiled by the ease of export from that device. Returned the Tascam -- no bargain if you can't use it.

Pretty disappointed in this unit. LCD is horrible under dim lighting. Biggest problem is low gain on line input. Coming out of a board with REC OUT maxed out this unit can barely produce enough level for voice recording even at high sensitivity. No bargain if it does not work. Looking for an alternative.

                        Great for Quick Demos

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

If you're writing some quick demos to share, this does the job. I've noticed it works best with quieter music, such as acoustic. I play in a band with some pretty heavy fuzzy guitars, and that doesn't really do well with the thing. But if you are recording a full band, you can get the best sound out of this by doing a live recording of all the instruments at once and using the dual-recording feature (that is, recording 2 tracks at the same time) and using the "pan" feature to put each track on complete opposite sides. In short, you can really distinguish the difference between separate tracks if you do them one at a time (especially vocals.) If you do record individual tracks with this, I'd recommend you use your own microphone.

Basically, it's a nice little piece of equipment for rough drafts of your songs. You might want to take a step up if you want some final copies of your work. Nothing awesome about it, nothing lame about it. It just gets the job done.
For what it is, everything on this thing gets the job done. There isn't much else you could add on that's going to improve the recording quality. One minor difficulty I have with it is how complicated certain things can be at first. It's a bit confusing the first time you try getting your tracks onto a computer, but it's nothing to get too worked up over. Just read the manual carefully and things go smoothly.
It's a neat little machine, not cluttered in any way. Knobs and buttons function smoothly and it's well-put-together. The plastic casing seems a little on the cheap side, but as long as you don't go throwing it against a wall you'll be fine.
For the price, you'd expect at least a little better sound quality. It's not horrible quality... but I'd price it differently if it were my decision.
