A CD quality 4-track digital studio that goes where you go!

TASCAM's DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Ltd Edition is based on 30 years of easy-to-use cassette Portastudios, updated with four tracks of CD-quality digital recording. Like those groundbreaking Portastudios, a row of knobs set levels and pan instead of a list of menus. This Limited Edition model comes in an cool black chrome finish at the same great price.

The DP-004 can record two sources at once to the included 1GB SD Card. A built-in stereo condenser microphone makes it simple to record anywhere you go, perfect for concerts, rehearsals and songwriting inspirations. A pair of 1/4" jacks on the rear panel let you to connect your own microphones or sources. You can even switch the inputs to guitar level for recording.

The DP-004 allows you to build up your arrangement until you've filled up all four tracks. The Bounce feature allows you to consolidate tracks and make room for more overdub layers. Track editing and undo is also available.

Mixing is also built into the Digital Pocketstudio. Once you set levels and pan, record your mix onto a dedicated stereo master track. You're able to transfer your tracks and mixes to a computer over USB 2 for CD burning and sharing online.

Despite its go-anywhere compact design – smaller than a paperback book – the DP-004 is simple enough for students, songwriters and musicians who want to keep their recording process simple and creative.

If you are looking for something cheap that will help you record songs you've been working on this is perfect. You can mic your amp, plug a guitar directly in or use the built in mics. Very fun and great product for the price.
Not as limiting as it looks. It has some real nice features and is easy to use. Takes an afternoon to figure out.
So far so good. I haven't had any problems with it yet. A few error messages but they were my own fault.

I'm more in the market for the bigger brother," since I want to use XLR mics with phantom power. (DP-008). But for a guitarist who also only works with mics compatible with the 1/4"" unbalanced inputs", this is a great practice/demo/musical diary/songwriting tool - I made great progress when I got my Tascam 4-track cassette recorder in the '80's, and this is so much better in so many ways.
No XLR input, limited to 16bit/44.1, only 2 simultaneous record tracks. But these aren't issues for many people, and it does a lot in a sturdy, compact box.
Tascam has a well deserved rep for well designed, sturdy, ergonomic gear. This is made to be used - in the field, not just in a studio.
Stupid deal at this price? I don't think so....

It could not be much better.

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

As a three year intermediate guitar player and not knowing a thing about recording, I recorded my first song (cover) on the Tascam DP-04 with four separate tracks, including drumming on the shipping box using the on-board mics, vocals with my own mic, acoustic guitar, and electric rhythm guitar and made a master track in the first afternoon with pan adjustments that I have never used before. Totally great experience and it uses the same power supply on my pedal board that my Tascam CD trainer uses. It is perfect for me and the level that I'm at, but the 8 track is probably the way to go for more experienced players (although much more expensive). It is so easy, especially with batteries, that I just have it near me to record any doodling on the fly using the built-in mics. It seems way more robust than my Tascam CD Trainer, so having it with you all the time seems possible. It is much larger than the handheld recorders, but you can keep adding more tracks after getting a concept down. Great product!!!! My only complaint is the lack of back lighting for the menu screen. Total bummer and should be seriously considered if using at a gig.

    Far better than Expected

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

Very, very pleased with the unit, and the 'chrome' finish looks cool. One suggestion...buy the power supply-this little monster chows batteries like they were candy.
I purchased this more for the portability than anything else, because I didn't want to lug something bulky around. I was very pleasantly surprised at what this little baby can do. The external onboard mics are better than I anticipated and have surprisingly-good range. The ONLY reason I didn't give this a '10' is because it doesn't convert the WAVs to mp3.
Plastic cuts down on the weight and that is a plus, but a lightweight metal case would be a little more reassuring to customers. It's not dainty by any means, but plastic is plastic.
Excellent, for about $ you will be able to get quickly into recording your work (I was laying tracks in ten minutes, and I took my time) and I did not experience any of the interface issues with my computer and this little beast. I plugged in the usb and bingo I had an icon in Control Panel without downloading any patches or other stuff you'll find some alluding to. When I went to the icon, it had a folder ready for data. Simple as pie.

    Much Better than Expected

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

Excellent product for what it is. Will exceed your expectations.
Superb. Within minutes I had this baby recording. The only pain in the ass (sort of) is that you have to hold down the record button and hit play at same time to initiate that track, which isn't that bad if you consider you certainly won't accidentally hit it. The pan and level controls are smooth and easy. Being able to assign tracks quickly and smoothly is also a huge, nec. plus...don't know why some other MTRs don't use same philosophy.
Seems to be a solid little unit, actually, but I am honeymooning with a plastic object. This won't be able to be properly rated until I have had it a while. So far, the sound quality (especially surprised with the sensitivity and range of the on board mics) is superb.
I am actually stunned at the versatility of this little machine. From opening the box to recording a track was literally under ten minutes. This is NOT a piece of equipment that is going to let you put BMI out of business...if you are looking for an extremely portable and feature-packed MTR that can record a left and right at once for the $, this is the enchilada. I got the 'chrome' limited ed. which looks very cool in my opinion. I had read other reviews on another site about people having trouble with the software or whatever...huh. I plugged my usb in, my computer showed me it as a storage device, I clicked on it and voila, I had the folder that is the included micro-card right there no prob...This thing so far is worth more than I paid.

    Great tool!!!

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

I bought this thing a few months ago and it has been a great tool to have. The sound is as good as any recorder out there, and the fact that you can slip it into a gig bag and take it with you is perfect for practice or gigs. Recording, and mixing is simple for anyone. Take 15 min. to read the manual and work with the demo and you can master this thing in a few hours. Only issue I've had is the fact that it eats batteries quick, but a trip to the local gamestop to buy a power supply for a psp will solve that problem.

    Do Not Punch

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

I Had this 4 Track for 3weeks with High Hopes and Good Results, until it started acting crazy!!! It would Record Tracks Fine then wouldnt read properly on my Laptop,it would mix the tracks up randomly or not show them and it would pop up tracks that were totally erased. It was a total letdown and it had a slight learning curve trying to figure it out. Its nothing like the Old 4tracks. When Me and a Band mate 1st read the instructions we laughed and wondered why it said,"DO NOT PUNCH", then after the learning curve(Mostly from no instructions for Windows7) and it acting crazy,we figured ,"THINGS YOU DO IN ANGER", for the DO NOT PUNCH. But honestly i believe it was Defective and wanted to warn people in case they got a defective 1. it was great until it went defective , nice digital sound and Recording

    Great Buy!

    By ddouble

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder Ltd Edition:

I bought the Tascam DP-004 about a year ago, and its been a great tool. So far, I've used it to record multi-track ideas on my own and to capture live rehearsals with my very loud rock band. The built-in mics work well (being able to set the input levels is a great feature), and you can plug in guitars or even a set of V-drums through the 1/4 inch inputs. The built in metronome and tuner came in handy when I took the device overseas and forgot some of my other peripherals. Bouncing ideas down to wav files and transferring them to my PC was very easy. Two pieces of advice. First, buy the power supply, as this thing eats up AA batteries. Second, read the quick-start guide and do the demo activity so you can learn the basic features in practice; this makes using the device much easier.
