OVERVIEW

Same functions as the DP-32, but with convenient SD media.

The TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is one of the best and most affordable ways to remove the mind-numbing glow of the computer screen from personal recording. It's safe to say, that after decades of manufacturing and transforming Portastudios, TASCAM has revolutionized the series once again. Employing 8 combo 1/4" - XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power, 32 tracks (8 mono, 12 stereo) the ability to select between stereo and mono and an affluence of other key features, TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is an obvious choice for multi-channel home recording. The DP-32SD is just like its brother the DP-32, but without the built-in CDR/RW drive for recording media.

Utilizing SD/SDHC media ensures confident recording, free from shock due to loud sounds
The DP-32SD adopted use of SD/SDHC media. SD/SDHC cards provide secure shock resistance due to the absence of any rotary mechanism. File format of the DP-32SD is FAT 16 or 32. You can find the recorded files on your computer when connected via USB.

The last 12 faders are selectable between MONO and STEREO
The DP-32SD has 12 selectable tracks between MONO or STEREO. These tracks provide more flexibility. For example, set to STEREO for recording synthesizer, or set to MONO when recording guitar or vocal. Not only that, you can create ideal settings for each track. (set #9 to #12 STEREO, then set #13 to #22 MONO) If all tracks are set to MONO the DP-32SD becomes a 20-track multi track recorder.

21 faders eliminates layer structuring
The DP-32SD, even with the high number of tracks and features is one of the easiest multi-track recorders in the market to use. The DP-32SD has 20 track-faders and one master fader. You can control any track with ease.

The 3.5" full-color LCD and the self-illuminated buttons increase visibility
The DP-32SD has a 3.5" LCD screen and select self-illuminated buttons, making it easy to view your entire creative process. Some of the illuminated buttons include (SOURCE, SELECT, REC, MUTE).

12 rotary knobs linked to the LCD to help increase easy operation
The DP-32SD has employed rotary knobs to control qualities such as EQ, Effect Send and other related features.

If you are looking for massive onboard effects, infinite ad nauseam tweaking, and more automation than r2d2 look elsewhere this unit is not for you!

If you want a hassle free, reliable, durable, portable and musical unit then read on.

I have had the unit long enough to make a competent review of it.
I bought the SD variant because I did not want a cd drive since it involves moving parts and moving parts is bad at least in my book :).

Using the unit is pretty straight forward you can take it out of the box and use it as an 8x8 recorder the first time you use it like an old 424 or similar tape machines.
My only real complaint about the unit is the manual. if you take the time to figure it out and maybe watch a couple of tutorials on it. It is not difficult to pickup.

Most of the projects I have done so far I actually mixed down on the machine then exported the resulting wave file to my ipad (final touch app) to master it.
I have to say having a slider for each channel is refreshing on mix down, and the virtual tracks are a really nice feature. This was the original reason I chose this unit over the R-16. I made great use of them on one project where I was tracking drums and the client wanted to have different takes side by side.

As other reviews have stated this unit does not have a lot of effects horsepower.
I would agree but for recording they are more than adequate.
And the guitar effects are passable though I only use them for tracking not recording a whole band live as you are limited in simultaneous effects.
I really like having the noise gate on all incoming inputs.
Also you can bounce a track or tracks and add effects at that point.

When doing mix down I usually use an external reverb in conjunction with the internal reverb. I personally don't use a lot of effects post anyway.

The preamps are very clean yet they seem to have the tascam (warmth) to them.
I do use a single tube preamp sometimes when tracking vocals.

I have paired the unit to my Mac-mini for file tweaking and transfer.
But I built a decrepit old Linux FTP box with 4 big cheap hdd's for archives.
As you can generate an incredible amount of data with this guy.

Projects completed with unit at time of review:
I have cut several good tracks for myself.

    Recorded:
    A string quartet. ( a paying gig)
A pipe organ concert. ( got rave reviews on this)

    Produced: Jazz trio project

    Produced:
several songs for a hip hop act.
Including doing the drum loops for stage show.

Produced/Recorded the neighbor kid's speed metal group.
Could've used 12 inputs on that one but hey it worked.

Recorded a series of ambient loops for commercial client.

And several more projects in the process right now.
Unit paid for itself twice over in the first month.

In final if you are tired of computer hassles and just want to make/record music.
This is the best machine for the money hands down.

Musicians friend took very good care of me on this purchase.

This is a disabled version of the real DP-32, which MF misrepresented. Listing said it had CDR & MIDI. Had neither! This is a special MF useless version. They never mentioned that. I can live without the CD writer,.... who uses them? But, without the MIDI sync this unit is rendered useless as a songwriting tool. Furthermore, it is not upgradable. Tascam updates don't even see it as a DP-32,.... because it's not. I'm learning.

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY

    By OLD SCHOOL MUSICIAN

    from COLUMBUS, OHIO

    Pros

      Cons

        Best Uses

Comments about TASCAM DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

Okay, first the GOOD news. Heavy duty metal construction, sliders have good solid resistance when sliding (a good thing), easy to read screen, great sound quality, and making a quick recording is fast and easy. While this unit is well worth the money, it isn't without its faults and limitations.

The BAD....This unit is highly lacking when it comes to onboard effects compared to my old Roland VS840EX. Also, I don't care for the on/off switch having a type of delayed start-up of the unit. Additionally, pressing two buttons to return to zero quickly seems totally unnecesscary. Personally, I don't care
for the unit having to be off when inserting or ejecting the SD card, simply because i'm used to inserting a zip disc on my VS840 when the unit is ON, and upon shut down it ejects itself. So, its kind of backwards compared to what I'm
used to on my old unit. I was also able to save up to eight mixdown scenes much quicker on the VS840 as compared to the Tascam DP32. Personally, I also prefer using the jog wheel on the VS840EX for panning as opposed to the tiny knob on the Tascam unit, as well as the cursor for switching from one screen to another versus using F2 AND F4 buttons on the Tascam as well as
other function buttons. While the tiny knobs are somewhat frustrating, (like an old Crate amplifier), I must admit they do seem to have pretty good frequency range.

Now for The Ugly.....I have the built in CD burner which is total junk. (Probably why they discontinued it).Its so cheap that the dish isn't even a full circle, let alone the fact that you have to manually pull the tray out and push it back in like a 1970s cassette player. Also, whoever organised and wrote the owners manual should find another occupation. It has no logical order, and between "refering to another page" and the way some things are worded, you're ready to just set the book on fire and figure it out on your own. Let's just say it isn't user friendly, and you are having to constantly refer back to it because it isn't presented well.

Comments about TASCAM DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I bought this recorder as an upgrade for my 2800NEO which for whatever reason had a bad jog wheel. The DP-32 is actually smaller footprint-wise than the NEO even thought it has more sliders. It records very clean and crisp. It reproduces the instrument sounds very well even when plugged directly into the board. Saving directly onto the removable SD card makes exporting to computer easy. However, I learned I cannot import files directly into the DP-32. I must copy them to the Depot folder and then import them from there making certain the bit rates match. A bit slow, much much quicker than via USB cable. Speaking of USB transferring, the DP-32 is apparently not compatible with Linux whereas the NEO was, so I am happy that the SD card makes transferring files so easy.

The only weaknesses I have found is I am not overly impressed with the internal reverb effects. I may get an external reverb/effects unit at some point.

Overall, as long as the jog wheel doesn't malfunction as the NEO's did, I think I will be very happy with this purchase. I am currently working on a western album for a friend who intends to have it professionally mastered and sell it. I believe this unit will do a very nice job for him.

So, I am a bass player, I experiment with other instruments, .... guitar, electronic drum kit, keyboards/synths, pedals etc. I, in expanding from using a looper and 4 track digital recorder to create music, added this to my studio. the creative capabilities of this unit are great. I can, in a moment of brilliance, come up with a bass line that i love, save it and then come back and redo or add to it. then when the moment strikes add a guitar rhythym riff or lead, synth line, vocals etc. usually layer this over a drum beat i record before or after the bass line. once you have your project complete, saving and then burning your creation is relatively easy.Take some time to get to know this thing, read the manual. you wont be disappointed. good monitors and headphones are a must !

I bought this expecting to have automation and midi sync capability. Was disappointed to find out otherwise. I returned the unit and got an original DP32 in its place. Awesome machine. If you need it to sync with midi equipment, you are out of luck. Do not buy this one. Hopefully, you can find an original DP32. If you don't need midi, you can't beat having all those tracks to use.

If you are a musician and you enjoy practicing, playing and occasionally recording your music, stay clear of this machine. On the other hand, if you are some techno-geek who enjoys spending long hours in front of a stupid machine that is impossible to figure out -- instead of practicing, playing or recording -- buy it.

I have owned the dp-03, so the familiarity of the
use of such a unit was a breeze. Very user friendly controls. Punch recording and editing
are what makes this unit shine. I also own the dp-32 with the cd burner. The dp-32sd does not
incorporate the cd burner or the MIDI feature. Not
a great concern for my needs. Recording via a microphone or a direct line with a guitar is un-
believable. The recordings are noiseless. The
compressor affect and mixer are a great addition.
It would have been nice to include the optional
foot switch when purchasing the unit.

Comments about TASCAM DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

This DP-32SD is a great add-on to my 'Project Studio'! This unit has everything one needs to have from start to finish; from recording, to mixing, to mastering and everything in between. Having the SD-Card is a Plus! I can multi-track record then take it out and put it right into my already programed Music-CPU. I now can save hours of recording time using this Multi-Track Recorder. Being able to transfer music files from one to another is a Blessing and simple. Can't wait to go out and do some 'Live Recordings'.

Thanks Tascam! With the DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio, you just made my recording life more complete.

Comments about TASCAM DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

This unit was all that I had researched it to be. THe niggling faults are that in mixdowns it's difficult to pan more than one channel at a time because only one can be selected at one time. The manual is a bit limited, but I have a DP-008ex which has some cross-over in function. The unit is easy to get up and operating and the screen is very good to use and the sound is excellent. I also like the 3-fold compression and the variable crossovers. It's easy to master the final and put it in the computer. It transfers WAV files which are (with an itunes App) easy to switch to MP3's. Then it's a simple process to drag them onto a thumb drive or any other destination. There are limitations, but the price would have to be a lot higher to get much more and that would also include a much bigger unit and price tag. Another neat little feature is the solid construction with metal construction. Simple, flat refrigerator magnets are perfect to label and use to indicate which channels are carrying which instruments. All in all, it is an outstanding unit with nothing approaching it in price.
