NS Design CR Series Electric Cello
      General Overview
The solid-body NS Cello, designed by Ned Steinberger, is now available in the affordable CR Series. This remarkable instrument, available with 4, 5 or 6-strings, is able to produce the delicate and precise tones of its acoustic parent as well as to create exciting new sounds through the tone shaping geometry of its innovative Polar TM piezo pickup system. Three interchangeable support systems provide new performance options. A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The inventive shoulder strap system allows full mobility, while the conventional end pin stand provides the traditional points of cello contact and position. The use of standard cello strings and scale length establishes a familiar starting point for the cellist's journey to the electric world. From there anything goes. The energetic response of the NS Cello can be tamed to deliver a traditional cello tone, or set loose to explore new territory.Solid Maple Body And Neck
The NS Cello is crafted of European maple, with a flame maple face. This solid-body design develops a rich multi-dimensional tone free from the constraints inherent in an acoustic instrument. The traditional cello scale length and neck shape have a familiar feel, while the small body allows full access to the upper register. Solid construction provides structural stability to resist changes in temperature and humidity.Ebony Fingerboard
The solid ebony fingerboard is graduated for each string for ideal playing action. Cascading dot markers provide an attractive and precise reference for fingering/intonation.Polar Pickup System
The NS Cello features the Polar bridge-mounted piezo pickup system. The Polar pickups can sense either vertical or lateral string vibration. Set in the vertical mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained. In the lateral mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity in the direction of the bow, with more attack when plucked. Attack and decay can be effectively controlled with the Polar pickup system.Active Electronics
The dual mode preamp allows the player to choose between two very distinct tone qualities. The first mode delivers the full frequency response of modern low impedance electronics, for a rich, full-blown "electric" sound. The second is balanced to produce the frequency response of the traditional cello, for a more "acoustic" sound. A three-way toggle switch allows the player to select the desired pickup and electronics options. Additional controls include volume and individual bass EQ & treble EQ controls.Portability
The padded tubular gig bag is only 40" long and 7" diameter, and weighs 10 lbs with the instrument and tripod stand. A storage area inside the gig bag has room for accessories.

Comments about NS Design CR Series Electric Cello:

I was really excited to get this cello. I found it difficult at first as the lack of neck to guide you into higher positions meant shifting was difficult. I don't think the little pin at the back of the neck is adequate.
I got used to that though and loved the tone of the instrument.
However I couldn't find a comfortable playing position. The brace for wearing the cello is obviously made for men and does not suit female players.
The alternative tripod is unstable and makes the cello unruly. The cello moves with you so that pitching is extremely hap-hazard.
Having had this cello for a month I started developing back problems and didn't realise the cause at first until it had developed into debilitating pain. Basically the angle of this cello gave me a twisted pelvis that has taken a lot of physiotherapy and I've needed sessions with chiropractors to straighten myself out again. Needless to say I would not recommend this instrument.

Comments about NS Design CR Series Electric Cello:

This is an awesome instrument. I've always been a fan of Ned Steinberger's work and this cello does not disappoint. Now, I am a guitarist crossing over to the cello, so when I set out to buy an electric cello I was put off by the way they look. Most electric cellos are downright ugly, all of them. They look more like space ships than anything else. Not the CR6. This is one sexy instrument. It is very light when compared to an electric guitar. With the CR6 you can tell that someone who knows about ergonomics had a saying in the design. There is a small brass button on the back telling you where 4th position would be. The controls are easily accessible. The included tripod is highly adjustable; you really can put it in any position. The electronics are very good, although they suffer from the usual honk prevalent on all piezo based systems. You can remedy that by inserting a thin piece of rubber between the bridge and the piezo. This will minimize the piezo's response to 2Khz (or it's whereabouts). Guitarists have been doing this for ages with great results. There is one area where the instrument wasn't very well designed, and that is string spacing. As you move closer to the bridge, the string where you have the bow on gets lower than the adjacent strings, making it impossible to bow a high note on anything but the 1st and 6th string. On the 4 and 5 string models this is apparently not an issue, but it is on the 6 string model. If you were to remove the high e and the lo F, the remaining strings would be much closer than in a traditional 4 string instrument. What I would have done is keep the string spacing of the 4 string model and add the extra two strings proportionately to that measurement. I think it would have been more functional that way. You would have to play everything Sul Ponticello to make it work. This is still a remarkable instrument, and I truly feel that NS offers a better built cello than any other company, particularly because of the state of the art electronics. Take the Wood Cobra cello for example. That thing costs [$] and it does not include a preamp for the pickup. Everyone knows that if you are using a piezo pickup you NEED a preamp if you want the best sound. You can still use a piezo without a preamp, but the sound quality suffers immensely.
