I just got this and installed it as a "tug bar" instead of a thumb-rest (ala 60's Jazz Bass). The original placement for this piece was below the G string so that you had a place for your fingers while you played with your thumb, which is how bassists who were used to playing double-bass used to do it. It was moved above the E string as a thumb rest in the 70's, and discontinued in the 80's. The template that comes in the package only covers the thumb-rest placement (above the E string) for both the Jazz and Precision basses, so if you want to get the cool 60's vibe (50's for the Precision) and place it below the G string, you have to eyeball it yourself. Fortunately, there are enough detailed pictures on the Fender site of re-issue bases that have the "tug bar" that it isn't too hard. I did it, and now my Mexi Fretless Jazz Bass looks like a 60's reissue.

It was not a semi solid Thumb Rest I thought it would be...You could make a better one out of a pieace of wood and paint it black...
Does not look it in the picture but it is a cheap pieace of hollow plastic.

Comments about Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass:

I have a Jazz Bass and mostly use a pick but when I want to use a finger technique I can anchor my hand now. They give you a diagram with it and it can be used above or below your strings.

Comments about Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass:

Played Fender bass since 1957. This thumb rest is just as good as the original. I installed it on my new Jaguar VM bass. Did not use the templates that came with the thumb rest but put it where I wanted it to suit my taste. It is not weak and does not bend as some suggest. Has a glossy finish that matches the black pick guard. Blends right in.

I put thumb rests on all my bass guitars. I have big hands and the rest helps me with hand control.

Comments about Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass:

I bought this to add to my fender jazz bass and the quality of build is terrible. It's made of thin cheap plastic and when I dug down into my strings and leaned on the thumb rest it bent in the center deforming. It should be made of a thicker plastic. Now I have two holes I drilled I. My guitar for nothing. I filled the holes with some pick guard screws but it looks wrong now. I plan on find a wood one soon or making my own thumb rest. Don't buy this one...

Positive point of reference. Good feel. Prefect size for my Very large hands. I use this type of rest on all my acoustic bass's.

Restoring pieces on my 1970 P-Bass. While many of the Fender replacement parts i've gotten have been pretty good, this piece seems like it's much thinner and more cheaply made. It's fine if what you're replacing is really really bad. I'm leaving the original on as it's ok. the good news is the new screws that came with it were useful.

I have a couple of basses that didn't have a good anchor point for my thumb. (I play finger style)
                  This rest gets it done.
