      OVERVIEW

Advanced pop filter for vocal recording.

The Stedman Proscreen XL is a professional advanced pop filter for all vocal applications. Made from an exclusive patented material that eliminates pops far more effectively than fabric filters, the Proscreen XL allows unobstructed passage of high frequencies helping to maintain the important detail in vocal recordings. In addition to its sonic advantages, it can be easily washed between sessions. Signal levels can be maximized without the risk of clipping caused by bursts (extremely important with digital formats). The Proscreen XL has a large 6" diameter screen with rubber bezel and includes a 13" flexible gooseneck with an extended adjustable clamp to allow easy adjustment and placement.

How it works: The angle of the large louvered openings in the Proscreen XL material allows sound to pass while diverting air bursts from vocal pops in a downward direction out of the back of the screen. Even extremely dynamic close vocal work will not allow bursts to reach the microphone.

Comments about Stedman Proscreen XL Pop Filter:

I have nearly worn out my Popper Stopper, which is more than 15 years old. When I bought it, the product brand was not owned by Shure, which it now is. The nylon has developed snags and tears. So I thought I would "trade up" and buy a Stedman Prosreen that I have read so much positive hype about over the last several years. Now that I have used both a nylon mesh and the Stedman metal screen plosive reducing devices I can certainly say, "don't waste your money on the Stedman", buy the less costly Shure Popper Stopper instead. I found from a side-by-side comparison that I did that the nylon mesh Popper Stopper does not attenuate high frequencies anymore than the Stedman. At least I do not hear a difference on my local tracks. Maybe you could measure a difference using some very high definition analytical equipment, but to my ear I found there was no difference. However, what the Stedman did that that I have a major problem with is that it leaves some weird, wind sounding artifacts in my vocal tracks that are not present when using the nylon mesh Popper Stopper. I have read a few other negative reviews about the Stedman product by other users having found the same problem. Stedman recommends the placement of the Popper stopper I guess about 3 inches away from the mic. They also recommend that the singer stand back away from the pop filter a fairly long distance. I tried this technique, but found the wind artifact problem was reduced, but still present. I'm sure if you stand several feet away from the microphone and turn up the gain when recording your tracks the Stedman would do a great job stopping or reducing plosives. You could do this without a pop filter and have the same effect. So I guess I will go out and buy a new Shure Popper Stopper. I think it is far superior to the Stedman metal mesh pop filter. I can place the Popper Stopper close to the microphone and I can sing close to the microphone without introduction of any weird wind artifacts. Something that I think is noteworthy about singing into a microphone: you have to practice your technique to reduce and ideally eliminate plosives and sibilance. In my opinion a good vocalist does not rely strictly upon using some device, regardless of brand or type to control and eliminate these undesirable artifacts.

Sorry to say, but this thing isn't stopping the pops. I'm not sure if it's my fault or not. I read the FAQ section on the Stedman website and it didn't help. While the P's are slightly less than using no windscreen it's still not acceptable. A nylon stocking over a sewing frame actually works better for popping P's, but it does change the tone. Sorry to leave a negative review, but that's been my experience.

                      THE Pop Filter To Get!

Comments about Stedman Proscreen XL Pop Filter:

I got a call to record vocals and knew I needed a good ole spit catcher. I looked at the single and double fabric, shockmount attatched and other mesh screens until I found a deal on this model. It has performed beautifully! I took it to band practice to try on our singer. There is a night and day difference in the sibilance and the voice was crystal. Double and thick fabric filters have been known to dull the tones because it stops the breaths rather than redirecting them. When you watch almost any professional recording documentary you see the singer using this filter!
Pros: Performs as stated. It pushes breath down and lets the sound waves through. The gooseneck is flexible yet stays in place. Clamps well and easily. Unlike double or thick fabric filters you can see the mic easier which helps your vocalist accurately aim at the diaphram for various microphones.Cons: The nylon tip bolt will mar the tube on your stand so pick a favorite spot or get a small rubber stopper to go between the bolt and tube.
The extension arm is solid. The gooseneck works well and has a rubber sleeve to resist corrosion. I've heard the smaller version has sharp edges but this has a protective rubber surround. Also, everything is bolted together rather than welded like some cheaper models.
The price is only steep to those who don't consider that this is washable! If you use fabric be prepared to expose your vocalist to other people's spittle, inhale antibacterial spray or buy a new filter for every session.

I bought a generic mesh pop filter just to get started recording vocals. I knew plosives kill a good recording so I figured I need a filter quick, and I went with what I could afford at the time. Recently I bought this filter and not only has it decreased the plosives in my recordings, it works much more easily in place. The way this is designed it literally redirects air downward and away from the mic. THe gooseneck is very firm and flexible and stays exactly where you tell it to. The clamp is large and fits any mic stand. If you're doing any kind of recording, do yourself the favor and spend the extra cash to get this thing.

The technology of most pop filters can be recreated with a loop and a nylon stocking. This pop filter rethinks the whole idea and redirects the puffs of air away from the mic very effectively. Now I can sing without "holding back" thus improving my performance. All recording set-ups would benefit. Attached easily and feels sturdy.

I used it with a professional system recently. I have used material pop filters for years and found that the Stedman Xl was worth every penny, paid. Well built, and sturdy in operation. Once the microphone was in place it did exceptionally well with the pop screen's purpose. Thanks, Stedman & Musician's Friend for producing fine quality products. Comments about Stedman Proscreen XL Pop Filter:

I have been going "naked" with my large condenser microphones in the past. They weren't very expensive so I honestly didn't care if my/my talent's spittle/plosives slowly destroyed the mikes.Recently though I picked up a higher-end microphone and would not dare use the thing without one! So I luckily found the Stedman Proscreen XL and was at first reluctant on the purchase. After some research I purchased it and am glad I did.It really does what it says. Blowing directly into the thing redirects air downward. And the metal mesh does let the higher frequency pass unlike regular nylon pop filters.I wish it didn't cost so much but it is the best out there and comes with a lifetime warranty! And it's MADE IN THE U.S.A.!
