OVERVIEW

Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL -the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away-yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality -over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch-perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

Useful and intuitive right out of the box crisp clear sound with easy level control and plenty of recording headroom, heck they even give you a 2 gig mini card to start, but you can always upgrade with inexpensive micro sd. Do yourself a favor and hit this before they're gone. Easy to use computer interface via USB to yr favorite audio mixing program. I am very satisfied !

After two weeks of use, mine is going back. I found it too noisy to make decent ambient recordings. Ok, fine. It's cheap. I thought I'd keep it around as a song writing scratch pad. Well, problem with that is, this thing chews through AA batteries like mad. The ones that came with it were dead after about 20 minutes of use. I thought they were just bad. Brand new duricells lasted about an hour. These two things in tandem - too noisy for good field recording, battery hog - kills the deal. Maybe I got a faulty device. I'll do an exchange with MF and repost a review if it was simply bad luck.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

Enjoyed my first use for recording piano accompaniments for school students. Have not figured out why record levels are low when set apparently correct by the built in vu meter. A matter of experience I suppose. Altogether a fine instrument with zero background noise. Easy to transfer files to my computer for CD burning.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I had been using the Tascam DR-05 for a short while now and I'm fairly impressed.

The device allows you to record in both 16 and 24 bit rate as well as a sampling frequency of up to 96 khz! That's very nice for a device that runs on 2 AA batteries. I also like the fact that you could run off the USB cable for power. I had been using it lately as a makeshift Room Mic for my drummer and I am loving this product.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I bought this thinking I would only use it for recording piano, song ideas, or guitar riffs due to it's simplicity, until I decided to record our band rehearsal one night... I set it up in the middle of our 15' rehearsal room and to my surprise there was little clipping if any at all
(we are a 3 piece rock band and we can be quite loud)
    very happy with this purchase

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

Although it was backordered,MF kept me updated on the status of my order. This is the newest model with current (2.0) firmware.
Many features you may overlook like chromatic tuner, line vs. Mic level recording (read manual) TRS/ stereo input plus monitor(headphones), easy and comfortable to use.
Only thing that I see as "bad" is the very low output from intenal speaker (not a deal breaker, just use headphones.. much better.)
Micro SD card, batteries(for testing) and usb cable in the box- I ess using this within minutes of opening the box.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I got this during a Stupid Deal of The Day, and couldn't be happier. This is my second one as my wife has the 1st one. I bought this as a way of doing audio interviews during events that the background noise was overriding the camera's mic. I can sync and blend the 2 audios for a professional exhibition. The versatile combinations of file formats, easy tranfer to DAW, and the compact footprint make this my recorder of choice over even the Zoom H4n and a Korg MR2, both of which I have. It also has a threaded mount which allows it to be used either on a Tripod or Camera, which only accentuates the many possibilities. I've not run it through it's paces yet, but am confident it will do everything I want......except for the line out. I'm not too sure about that yet. I'm referring to line out monitoring straight to a camera bypassing the camera's built in mics. The 2.0 firmware upgrade may have solved that, but I haven't had time to investigate. Catch it on a deal and it's a steal!!!!

Had to find out how to change to Auto Level, the default microphone input was very soft. After that it was great, makes nice recordings. Mine came with a 4 GB card even though the box said 2 GB. Cool bonus.

I used the DR-05 to record a small church praise band. I play a Roland vdrum Kit and it recorded almost as good as a 16channel board. I was super easy to drop the wav file in protools to sweeten the tone. With a stereo audio track and a master fader I tweeked this live recording into a burn to disc wav file and then zip filed it to send to my buddies in an email and or a text message. It's come a long way from recording gigs with a cassette tape deck.

Once I read through the book along with a friend, we were able to figure out what I needed to know to do what I wanted it to do for me: record, slow down the speed to decipher all the notes. I just wanted a recorder to learn new material, and it does just that. There are more features to it, I haven't figured out yet. it is also a tuner. I would recommend it!
