I used to own a pair of Bose on-ear headphones, which were definitely the nicest headphones I've ever owned... Then they wound up broken, but I'll spare you the details. Needless to say, I was in the market for a new pair. However, I wasn't up for spending the large chunk of dough that I did on those Bose headphones again.

So originally, on recommendation of a couple friends, I went over to the local deparment store and bought a pair of Skull Candy headphones for ~$40. A terrible decision, as they were some of the worst sounding headphones I've heard in a while--rivaling something like a free pair you'd get bundled along with with a knockoff Walkman. So, I returned those pretty quickly, and almost wound up swapping them for similarly priced pair of Sony headphones but talked myself out of it--reason being, I made the assumption that all these cheap headphones would sound like garbage. So next, I decided to check here, almost resigned to the fact that I needed to spend way more than I originally intended to. Did some browsing, and wound up with these (yes, another cheap pair of headphones). I was enticed by the good reviews, and plus they were included in one of those sales... errr "sales"... that MF typically has.

As soon as I heard them, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I had almost assumed I was going to get burned a third time (especially after seeing how cheap they look and feel in real life), so hearing for myself that they were actually good headphones was a pleasant surprise, to say the least. Fast forward, and I've owned these for a few months now, and I'll go ahead and say that I'm pretty satisfied with them.

Since I'm just a regular dude, I use these headphones for just about everything. They come along with me for listening to my iPod, for watching movies on my laptop, plugging into my guitar amp, using them for my amateur recording and mixing at home... pretty much everything. And they're up to the task.

On the plus side, they sound pretty decent. Obviously these aren't premium headphones we're talking about, but for the price you pay, the clarity and range is decent. The bass isn't as full as I'd like, but it's most definitely there. They're also lightweight, pretty comfortable, and adjust to my head well. If I wear them for too long, say over an hour or two, my ears start to hurt a little bit, but I take that as a sign that I need to get up and do something else anyway.

With the good, there is some bad though. The one thing I absolutely hate (and I repeat, HATE) about these headphones is the little textured pattern of dots on the outside of them. For one, they're sort of ugly, but that's not the big problem. A lot of the time, when removing the headphones, or just re-adjusting them, I accidentally hit or drag a nail across them while reaching for the headphones. This results in a noise loud enough to almost blow your eardrums out depending on how hard you hit them. At the very least it makes your ear hurt like hell. The fact that I would have to consider putting tape over them, or even sanding them down in a desperate attempt to fix that (I won't) is just stupid. It's an awful design choice.

Despite that problem, I'm still happy with these headphones. Considering price and quality, I'd almost give these 5 stars, but that would be misleading, since they aren't perfect headphones. I won't say that these are the last headphones I'll ever own, because there's a lot of room to improve, but for the time being I'd say these headphones were an excellent desicion.

      THE GOOD:

They're comfortable, light and handle high volumes well without breaking up.

      THE BAD:

I play bass and love bass frequencies. I thought perhaps the other reviews claiming these headphones are too bass-heavy might be exagerated, so I gave them a shot. They were right. I hoped to use them for home recording and practicing my bass quietly. Sadly, they're just too bassy and lack any high-end definition.

I tried plugging them into my phone and they sounded equally bad when playing music. My cheap, old, department store Sony headphones sound more balanced. I'll be returning them shortly.

Comments about AKG K 44 Headphones:

Picked these up about a week ago for an extremely good price. First let me say I am a tone obsessive guitarist and my primary purpose in purchasing these was to be able to play in the middle of the night without getting evicted from my apartment. Done. These do exactly what I needed them to do in that aspect. More pros, the cord is plenty long enough to move around some while plugged in. My biggest positive I can give here is the comfort level, having used a ton of headphones over the years these (especially the headband portion) are the most comfortable I have ever put on. They are very clear and seem to hold a decent level of volume across their range (meaning they don't cut out when the bass hits and start lacking in treble). That brings me to my cons, The bass in these things is VERY sub par. It works for what I want but if I try to play anything through my stereo system or laptop with these in the punch just isn't there. Not at all a deal breaker for me but if you are into say rap or house music you will be sorely disappointed just be forewarned. If the punch was there I would have given it 4 stars, if the overall sound quality was even better it would have got 5 stars but that in mind they also would be at least double the price. If you are looking for just a pair of headphones to use for "hobbies" these fit the bill. If you are looking for professional quality and sound for mixing and or recording, save up and do a higher grade pair. Good luck no matter what you decide.

I bought these headphones when they were offered as the deal of the day. After only three uses there is an extreme volume drop off in the left speaker. It can barely be heard compared to the right. Don't waste your money on these, they didn't sound that good the 3 times they actually worked. Junk

A friend also uses these in his studio and his have held up for years too. They are comfortable, sound good, and durable. The cord is a good length too. What more could you want?

These were a gift and the connection to the headphone was spotty. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. I tried to call Customer Service at AKG and they never returned my phone calls. I left many messages. Since I purchased the extended warranty, I tried to get a refund from Musician's Friend and they said that since it was a manufacture defect that it was not covered by the extended warranty! Don't waste your money!!
