OVERVIEW

Portable monitoring and USB audio interface in one!

Alesis M1 Active 320 powered monitor speakers make a lot of sense on your studio desktop and for field recording and other traveling audio engineers. The Alesis monitors connect via USB to your laptop or computer for plug-and-play listening. These compact speakers are equipped with I/O for connecting a keyboard, mic preamp, guitar effects, mixer, and other audio components for easy computer recording.

M1 Active 320 monitor speakers deliver 16-bit/44.1-48kHz audio quality through a USB 1.1 port--without the need for special drivers. Besides the USB cable, the I/O includes quality 1/4" plugs and standard RCA jacks, a TRS headphone output, two unbalanced 1/4" phone jacks inputs, a stereo 1/8" mini-jack input, and stereo RCA inputs. Another nice benefit is that each monitor speaker is magnetically shielded, so you won't have to worry about placing them near TVs or computers.

Overall, for the price you would be hard pressed to find better. Keep in mind that you do get what you pay for. If you want something high quality then budget more money. That said, these are fantastic monitors, they sound great and are fairly durable. They fulfill the purpose I purchased them for.
I give them an 8 because they are fairly basic so not many features (Basic is not a bad thing). The usb interface makes it so you don't need a sound card to run these on your computer.
I was amazed by the sound quality and volume that these little monitors put out. They are the size of bookshelf speakers and yet sound like speakers twice their size. The low end is decent for not having separate subs, granted units with a sub will give more bass however they usually cost 3-4 times more than these. They are built fairly well, the volume knob is solid and not some flimsy plastic thing that just hangs there. They are extremely powerful as well, I am running them at 10 oclock and my music is normal listening volume. If I turn them up to 12 they are very loud and I can hear them halfway across the house and that is with the knob at 50%. The only controversial thing that I notice is that you don't really get any sound out of them if the knob is lower than 9 oclock however I don't consider this a bad thing it is just worth mentioning.
For the price these are a fantastic value. Others have described these as expensive pc speakers which in a way is true because of their size and features. It all comes down to what you are looking for, I bought these because I wanted to do some recording on my pc and wanted a speaker system that was not dynamic (modify the eq to make it "sound better"). These seem to give an accurate representation of how a song or track sounds.

I bought these monitors a few years ago, thinking they would suit my dorm. I was in college at the time. I happened across them on MF today and was shocked how well rated they are. These monitors are completely terrible. I have owned and used many quality speakers and monitors over the years, these are certainly not that. The response is completely unbalanced. Imagine listening to music through speakers with broken tweeters. Then, as if that weren't bad enough, add in a huge boost in the low end. I remember eqing iTunes to cut low frequencies by at least 10db and boosting the highs all the same, and still had a hollow sound with slight clarity. These are useless for trying to create a mix, master, or even reference while recording. Definitely avoid them for your home studio.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

The cons of purchasing any speaker system with an internal amplifier is serviceability. This pair lasted on a few months before one channel shut down. So now it is only throw away because the cost of repair is greater than the value.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

Faster, Better & Cheaper are always the right solution. I sandbox my recording systems. I balance Tape & Digital. For me, Digital is best for output. Tape is best for input. I've moved away from the Pro-Tools internet Nexus. Computers can be hacked. Vendors will mess with you! But Tape can't. Pro-Tools is great for editing cut & paste; but isn't worth a hill of beans in "Lo-Fi combat" situation. To me , less is always more. Keep it simple stupid. It's the groove not the tubes that matter in art. Just ask Neil Young!

I use them on my computer and they do the job. Better than most computer speakers I have used. For the price they are not bad. Don't expect pro quality for this price. I would possibly recommend if someone was looking for good computer monitors.

I've been a musician, producer, and audio engineer for about 20 years. I ordered these while I was waiting for some high end monitors because I had some work that still needed to be done. After listening with them for about 1 minute I already knew I made a mistake and I sent them back. Just go get yourself a good pair of headphones or better monitors.

These are not bad if you just want to have some speakers to have at home to listen to music from your computer or something. But these are absolutely no good for studio purposes. They are quiet and sound sort of muddy. They are also really bass heavy which is bad news for mixing. You get what you pay for. Save your money and get something you can actually use for mixing.

When I hooked these up to my laptop I couldn't believe how big they sounded. These things get loud if you want them to. Nice and full sounding too. They sound like much bigger monitors to me. There is a bass boost but there is plenty without it so I keep it off. For the money I am very happy with the purchase. I will be getting another set for outdoor music to our patio actually because they are loud enough to get the job done in a big space I believe.

I was surprised by these studio monitors. Great clear sound out of them and they also act as an interface, as well. I have been using them with my iPad for mobile recording, and they work great. I have also run some of my multi-effects processors through them, and they do a great job at reproducing uncolored flat response sound from them as well. At the price that these are at, you simply cannot beat them.

As usual, speedy and free shipping for musicians friend. You really can't go wrong with these.
