OVERVIEW

Mono-channel tube preamp with natural warmth.

The Alesis MicTube Solo preamplifier will add a warm, vintage tone to any of your microphone or instrument sources. Ideal for any recording or live setup, the MicTube Solo features an easy-to-use control layout and one of the most classic sounding, lowest-noise vacuum tubes: the legendary 12AX7. Aside from the tube, the MicTube Solo features a minimized circuit path, so it preserves the essence of the signal coming from the microphone faithfully.

The MicTube raises the level of any mic up to line level, adding as much or as little of the tube’s signature sound as you like. Two knobs and four buttons are all you need to optimize the MicTube Solo for virtually any setting. You’ll find a -20 dB pad switch for mics with hotter outputs or louder sound sources. A phase reverse switch helps you optimize multi-mic setups, and the MicTube Solo also provides +48 volt phantom power for any condenser microphone, plus an 80Hz high-pass filter.

In additional to a standard 3-pin XLR jack for microphones, the MicTube Solo also gives you a 1/4", high-impedance DI jack for in plugging guitars and basses. Separate Gain and Drive (“vintage”) controls allow you to dial in the perfect blend of level and tone, and a vintage-style VU meter is perfect for keeping an eye on things. Professional XLR and 1/4" outputs complete the professional package.

I bought this on a Stupid Deal of the Day for crazy cheap and figured I couldn't loose. Well, I did. I have a Profire 2626 and GA Pre 73, so as far as preamps are concerned, I'm doing ok. Again, buying this on a whim thinking I could replace the tube and come out with something was a mistake on my part.

The standard sound it ok, just ok. My GA Pre 73 sounds a little better. I replaced it with a vintage Tung Sol 12ax7 and was not impressed, in fact it sounded worse. So off to the big store to see if I can find another tube. My Stupid Deal of the Day is getting expensive trying to make a poor preamp sound ok. I'd advise to look at the other pre's on MF.

Worked Well for direct input

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

I use this pre-amp as a directbox for practice with my guitar. So rather then bringing amps to rehearsal etc. I use the pre amp and an effects pedal for my guitar and line in to the PA. Gives me a nice clean sound for my Fender Strat and allows us to control the volume in the room. I wouldn't do this on stage necessarily but it works well for practice.

I use a simple digitech rp 55 on the front end that I have edited settings to my liking and it actually works very well. No noise and you can get a little tube distortion if you want. For the price...I would recommend it.

I did use on acoustic recordings and some vocal recordings but not much difference as my audio interface has pretty nice pre amps. If you have a two channel audio interface with two xlr's and need phantom power for one channel and not the other...leave the phantom power off on the interface and use this preamp...you can record with multiple mics and not worry about the power requirements.

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

For Home Studio voice over / radio commercial production, this ALESIS Mono Tube Preamp is quite impressive. I have used units TWICE THE PRICE with so-so results. Teamed with my SHURE SM7B microphone, I am very pleased with the warmth, clarity, and punch this box delivers. It provides "just enough" added to my voice tracks to get thumbs up and approving nods from stations and clients. Really a Small Wonder.

For me it was a great SDOTD

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

Picked this up on a Stupid Deal of the Day. I'm an okay singer and do a lot of home recording. This unit can make a nice subtle change and punch to home recordings. Sounds great on an MXL Condenser Mic and sounds even better on an SM58 Beta. Don't expect a lot from this, but it does give me a better recorded sound on the vocals. I pre-amp into my TC-Helicon and get a great tone overall. It adds a very good front end compression to help eliminate those pops and sudden levels changes on vocals to help keep things level. For home studio use it's nice, it sits nicely on a desktop and doesn't take a lot of space. Over all, I'm glad I bought it. It has been the best Stupid Deal of the Day piece I've bought!

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

This is a very handy piece of gear to have around. I bought it as the "Stupid Deal of the Day" as an impulse buy, and was wondering if I had just wasted my money. I don't do any recording, but I thought I'd try it to enhance the sound of vocals. It does add a certain warmth to your sound. Right after I got it, my PA amp took a bad spell, and has been in the repair shop ever since, mystifying the techs. So I had to do an emergency purchase of another powered mixer, but in the meantime, this little preamp allowed me to run my vocal mic into a guitar tube amp, getting me by until I received my new PA amp. I now use it as a backup for small venues in the event of PA breakdowns. I also use it at home for vocals, just because it is portable and easy to set up. I know that there are better preamps out there, but this little unit is a real safety net in the event of equiptment failures.

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

Got this pre dirt cheap as a Stupid Deal of the Day like most other reviewers. I bought it thinking the worst case scenario is I'm out the money, but I figured I could probably flip it for the same amount anyway so why not. I have been using it live as a tube direct box for bass guitar, MM Stingray 5 into tuner then the Alesis pre. We don't have amps on stage so I use it to boost the signal to the board and add a little warmth and edge, sound man and fellow band members all agree that it sounds quite good. I will probably buy one or two more eventually, certainly if I see it as a Stupid Deal again.

The only negative I can see is the wall wart power adapter is a weak point and its not a standard voltage so I am concerned about replacing it when it goes bad.

I had wanted a tube bass amp, but not for the price. I bought this on a Stupid Deal of the Day special, and it works great for a warm tube tone through a Rumble 350 amp with a 4x10,1x15 stack. I run low gain and mid drive and it works well. Thinking about buying another.

Comments about Alesis MicTube Solo Mono Tube Microphone Preamp:

This is not a hi-end mix pre, it's more of an effect than anything else. I bought a pair since they were dirt cheap (stupid deal) and I don't regret it but they won't see a lot of use. If you are looking for a mic pre to warm up your vocal tracks and make your mics sound best save up and get a decent channel strip but if you just want a tube fuzz box that has a XLR in/outs and phantom power - phase reverse and lo-cut as well.

I would only recommend as an add-on to an already complete studio.

Great Mic preamp! I also used it as a Guitar effect to add a little warmth. The tone is perfect. It has just the right amount of "there's a tube in there" sound. The low cut and pad features are handy. The price was right. I only gave it 4 stars because it has a little noise when pushed.

I picked this up as a Deal-of-the-Day and ended up on back-order status. For the price it seemed worth buying -- and it was! Using it, right now, to warm up the midrange on a Peavey Bachstage 65w amp for small jazz gigs. Will be trying it with acoustic as well. Really opens up the sound and gives a bit more dynamic range. Glad I took the chance.
