These are great speakers for the dollars. I have a masters in recording engineering and have worked with many monitors. These are very good. VERY flat response. They are not $1,000 studio monitors but, bery close. You should not expect to use these monitors as computer or stereo speakers or expect a "cabinet tuned" wide dynamic listening response from them. THESE ARE MONITORS NOT GENERAL SPEAKERS!!!! These monitors require a good EQ and some time to tune them to your room. They also require a good amp and a resonable power amp to push them. Don't low-ball your amp or EQ. Don't cheap out! These speakers will take good equipment to make them talk. Don't expect to drive them using your AVR or low quality amp.

They have a VERY flat sound and a very tight bottom end. Very good sound and quality for the money. I don't think you will find a a better nearfield monitor for the price.

If you take some time to tune these speakers (1/3 octive per ch. minimum) to your room and have ample power to drive them, you will not be disappointed.

These monitor are very close to 1db +/- for both highs and lows. It's doesn't take a guru to get these tuned into your room and get them setup for good mix.

None or VERY minimal distortion on the low end. These guys will take a wide variety of music but seem more tuned for rap/pop/R&B but also perform very well with tight bottom rock and 50's 60's style music.

No, I didn't re-discover my music collection when I purchased these but, I did scan though many different styles to demo. I'm pleased.

As long as your mixing tight and loud, you will be pleased.

These have great reviews and I have a robust audiophile amp which handles low ohm loads collecting dust so I opted for passive monitors rather than active. The first pair shipped had a damaged tweeter in one of the pair shipped (they are sold in pairs). The tweeter cone was pushed in. I sent them back. I just got the new set and the first speaker I open has a damaged tweeter cone AGAIN. This is coming out of an unopened factor box, twice. This tells me Alesis has poor quality control. I won't waste my time trying a third attempt. They are going back for a refund.

Comments about Alesis Monitor 1 MKII Passive Monitors (Pair):

Got a lot of help from these reviews so I thought I'd contribute to further help those in their all important monitor selection.

These speakers are awesome. Very clear, very powerful. I have mine being run by an 8ohm receiver and there is no loss of quality or power.

The only "issue" is that for some, myself included at times, there may be a bit too much low end. I know some, myself included at times, would say "how can you have too much low end?" Low end rocks, but for accuracy, it can be deceiving. I wanted more low end in my general monitor sound and these babies give it to me in spades. I have NS-10s to give me the flat truth - I got these so I could hear what it COULD sound like. : )

If you want a reasonably priced pair of superb monitors, these are it, no question about it. I'm so happy with my purchase - thanks in large part to those who reviewed them prior to my purchase - I can't even tell you.

          Well, I suppose I just did. : )

Comments about Alesis Monitor 1 MKII Passive Monitors (Pair):

These speakers sound very good. As others have mentioned the frequency response feels very flat which is what I wanted. The bass could be louder but that is to be expected for speakers of this size. The only issue I have with the speakers. I only have 8 ohm amplifiers. They work but they will overheat faster than you might think if you crank them up loud. If I had it to do over again I might consider a different option.

Comments about Alesis Monitor 1 MKII Passive Monitors (Pair):

I wanted some bookshelf speakers for my home stereo and I decided to go with monitors. I prefer clear sound reproduction rather than the typical home-stereo tuned style of most consumer speakers. For example, I found myself loving listening to recordings through my Yamaha monitors in my studio. So, I bought these Alesis monitors because I wanted a passive monitor to be powered by my home stereo amp.
They work great. Sound great. Bass is not overwhelming, but that's kind of what I wanted so as to not boom-boom my neighbors through apartment walls.

I've had these for years, and have used them to practice guitar and bass through them, as well as recording ... so they are tough. HOWEVER, for pro level recording, I have learned the hard way that they sound great but if you pump up the bass the way you might like, when you try that mix out a big system or in a car with a good stereo, the bass is way too loud. Result being I had to remix 20 songs, which took 2 weeks, 14 hrs a day. So like other monitors, if you are doing something SERIOUS, you should invest in a subwoofer so you can be absolutely sure you've got the best mix that will stand up. My ears are ringing.

For the price, these can't be beat. Got these on sale at Musician's Friend. Free shipping, and they arrived in 3 days. Money well spent. I have these paired with an old 100 watt stereo amplifier in my home studio. They're clear, accurate, with good bass response. When I'm mixing, I can hear every detail. To me, passive monitors are the way to go. Active monitors all run hot and if the amp goes, so does the whole (expensive) speaker.
Bottom line: get these, you won't be disappointed.

I am using these in my band room and I wish they had a grill on the front to protect the speakers from inquisitive hands. The sound quality is first rate and they take up much less space then the 1980's speakers that I have been using. Grat sound for the price.
