Comments about Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 FX 8-Channel Mixer with FX and 24-bit recording:
Drivers installed fast and easy, Windows XP Pro recognized right away. Cakewalk Home Studio worked with it perfect the first time and every time since.
Really surprised considering all the problems I've read about in reviews and forums. But took a chance anyway wanting more then SB Live sound card was doing.
Comments about Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 FX 8-Channel Mixer with FX and 24-bit recording:
Inserts.. monitor out... cool the running temp down a little, and I would give it a 10. But this board really is fantastic!
As I mentioned, this is not my first mixer. I am basing my knowledge off of new and used Mackie, Peavey, and Yamaha boards in the $200-$500 range. This board has less channels than the other boards that I have from that range... but frankly, I have been very pleased with it's versatility. I can mix a lot more through this than I thought I would be able to.
I mainly use this board to capture practices and gigs... as a learning tool... and as a recording interface.
This thing is great. I have 2 mackie boards(12 and 20 channel), and have had/used several other boards including Peavey, and Yamaha Not all USB mixers are the same. When I was shopping for a board a year ago, this was the ONLY "USB" board in this price range that could stream all channels separately. As I understand it, the other boards in this range streamed the masters out only. This has made a HUGE difference. I can take this to a gig... hit record and play. At the end of the night, I have all the musicians on their own tracks along with the master channel. I have recorded probably a hundred hours of practice on this. If someone wants a practice track to use during the week, I can just render a track for them that has the band MINUS them. Then they have their backing track.
I would have liked to have inserts on the channels.
1 year of gigging and practicing. I do care for it... but I don't baby it. The only 2 things that I can say...
1) The connector for the power supply came apart. The screw came out on its own and I lost it. I need to run to the hardware store to get another one
2) The unit gets MUCH hotter than other mixers I have used. Having an external power supply should have reduced the heat... but it still gets very warm.... as such, I don't leave this unit on when I am not actively using it.
Other than that, no problems at all. Streaming sound from this board into an Intel Based, Windows 7, 32-bit O.S. with 4 GB Ram.
I prefer sliders to knobs... personal preference. At first I as afraid that they might be cheap 'pots'... but they work well. No noise when I adjust them.
This board has been great. With a little imagination, you can get it to do what you need it to... for the price, I could not find anything that streamed each channel like this one does. The input channels are 'raw'.. if you will. In other words... if you are putting reverb on channel 1, and you stream channel 1 and your main out to the computer. The Channel 1 track will NOT have the effects on them. The Main Channel will. Although this may confusing to the beginner, it is really desired/preffered because then you can adjust the track according on your 'mix-down' instead of being forced to live with a reverb that you chose because it was the best fit for the stage you were on.
