OVERVIEW

Tone, functionality, and unparalleled performance.

The ART MPA Gold 2 Channel Microphone Preamp with Variable Impedance is defined by warmth, presence, clarity, and a performance that adheres to incredibly high standards with first-class features and components.

Variable Input Impedance optimizes the ART MPA Gold 2 for performance with a wide range of microphones. This infinitely adjustable variation dramatically alters the performance of the microphone and creates more sonic possibilities.

The MPA Gold 2 preamp's selectable Tube Plate Voltage function delivers a wide variety of tones. The tube circuit is differential, and provides the equivalent of a 300V power supply on the high voltage setting. With very low self-noise, the normal setting maintains classic tube preamp sounds.

The ART MPA Gold's unique tube circuitry utilizes 2 - 12AX7A vacuum tubes and renders unsurpassed detail and clarity with a broad range of mics. It provides gain with controlled overload while maintaining the dynamic range of the previous stage.

In addition to the large VU meters, the MPA Gold mic preamp has Tube Warmth LED metering which measures the left and right audio channel levels. Average level attack and release are measured in milliseconds and the peak function has a 20-microsecond attack time. The analog meter range is switchable between -10dB and +4dBU. The High Pass filter is continuously variable from 15Hz to 150Hz.

FEATURES
  • Variable input impedance (150 - 3000 ohms)
  • Selectable tube plate voltage
  • Large VU meters with range switch
  • Tube warmth LED meter
  • Discrete class A input microphone preamplifier
  • Lower noise at low gain stages

I've owned this unit for several years now, and have been very happy with the warmth it adds to my mixes. However, right out of the box, the left VU meter needle would hang-up in the middle and when the unit was shut off, the needle would just "sit there!." Turns out that the plastic scale behind the needle was lifting/warping from the heat of the VU lamps!! I was deep into a project at the time and couldn't wait for another amp to be sent. I broke ALL the rules and opened-up the unit, got the VU meter out. By the way, the VU faceplate, bulb holder, EVERYTHING is glued together!!! NOT an easy fix! But it works great NOW!(after some super glue on the scale plate behind the needle!)AND a couple of cooling holes drilled in the top of the bulb-holder assembly! PLEASE NOTE: I LOVE ART products! I currently own 90% of what is currently offered! Whenever I set-up to mix and master a CD, at least two ART units are in the signal chain.

I have 2 ART Compressors and had a MPA Gold That's had several problems as well as an OP Amp going on one of the Compressors. The MPA smoked and now they won't repair it. They said I must of run power through it. It's been hooked up to the same mike for a year and not touched. There service was Bad as well as the warranty protection. Vior Dire (Buyer Beware)

great unit

For the price this thing is awesome.I put in some Mullard tubes and it sounds great.Sometimes I just run a guitar through this into my DAW, add some gain, put on some verb and it sounds awesome. I dont think anyone would regret this purchase. It makes me want to try ART's compressor too..

This unit is as good as gold!

By Kristian-mqgex

I'm an eletronic musician and vocalist who works from a home studio. I needed a mic preamp that would help me to lay down killer vocals and also to warm up the keyboard and PC tracks. The ART MPA Gold 2 turned out to be an excellent choice! I was pleasantly satisfied with this thing!Right out of the box, this baby's a sexy looking unit (esp when you hit the power switch! f$%* yeah!), and it's made with high quality materials. Its features, such as the variable imput impedance and LPF, give you flexablity to tweek your mic signal and get the most out of it. A small negative is that they went a little cheap on the tubes. This is evident when you significantly overdrive them. The distortion when you load up the tubes with more voltage is more brittle/crackly than I would like. Get better tubes (I got some Ruby Tubes on the way) for this thing. That's the only reason I shaved off a half a star for value. But the factory tubes perform well and provide execellent presence and warmth at lower levels.Buy it and enjoy it! :)

Best Pre-amp in price range

By Bond007ca

from Orange County, CA

This is the first review I have written for a product; that is how good the MPA gold is. The sound quality on this thing is just plain awesome (I did change tubes with 2 Tesla tubes). I went from a cold thin digital sound to a warm and fat digital sound. This is the best recording investment I have made and I am glad I went with this model as it feels and looks like it will last at least the 5 years they guarantee this product for. If you record to your PC, get this and thank me later.

Excellent Pre-Amp!

I've owned this unit for about 1 1/2 years now. I've used it for Vocals, Bass, Electric Guitar, Drums, Acoustic Guitar and Sax. I am very happy with this unit.I would recommend changing the tubes as the stock ones sound a bit brittle. I put in a set of Ruby Tubes, and the sound is much warmer now. The unit has been extremely reliable. The only down side is that one channel is out of phase with the other. Odd, but easily fixed with the the push of a button on the front panel. As far as sound, it is open, airy and warm. The variable impedence knob adds to the flexability. I'm currently using At4040's and a Sterling Audio ST66 tube mic as well as some cheaper ones and have never been disappointed. It's usable with the stock tubes, but much better with better tubes.Great Unit!

a great bang for the buck

By Ricky Reilly

from Boston, MA

I love everything about this pre. It sounds great and its ideal for the home studio on a tight budget. I recently recorded a vocal through the mpa gold and then recorded the same thing using only the pre in an mbox2 pro, after a quick a-b between the two, I was blown away with the difference. The vocal through the mpa gold was more present, more natural, and a whole hell of alot warmer...and it was like all of the sudden i was listening to a record and not just a demo.

one of the best

This preamp is very impressive. It looks great-sounds great, and has a price tag that represents common sense. The build quality is very good both inside and out. The variable impredence is a great feature and opens up a lot of sound options. I prefer the plate voltage on the normal setting, but putting it on the high voltage setting gives a very nice super clean sound. I have upgraded mine with the Tesla ecc83s tubes and it fattened up the sound some. This is a great buy.

Nice unit, especially for the price

We have a home project studio, now recording a second CD. The first CD we produced on a shoestring budget with no pre amp, just a firewire A/D converter. The sound improvement in the acoustic guitar we're recording this time around is more than worth the price of admission. A nice feature is that this preamp allows you to add gain either through the tube section or just through the solid state electronics, depending on the sound you want. I'm very happy, and I'm sure I'd have to spend a whole lot more money to get a significant improvement in sound, and even then, I'd spend it first on better mics.

Use Telefunkens and it's truly Gold!

By WhiteFeather

from Philadelphia

I do mostly electronics, guitars and loud stuff, but when I was asked to engineer an album for an artist who sings quite dynamically and plays ukelele, I added this preamp. The controls knobs are the best knobs of anything in my studio. More than just feel good, they are very sensitive and precise. The unit however was so incredibly noisy that it was completely unuseable. I thought of returning it but I took a gamble on the tubes and replaced them with a new matched pair of Telefunkens. Bingo! The Telefunkens are so sweet that I sold my Yamaha compressor. I even use this preamp to master my recordings. I will never part with it. Plan on spending at least a hundred more on new tubes.
