I've only had this a week so only gave it 4 stars at this point due to lack of hands on time with it - not due to any issues with the unit itself.
I've recorded drum overheads and a bass guitar through it. It performs as expected.
The bass was warmer, fatter. I generally go DI through a PreSonus FireStudio Project into Guitar Rig and the tube gave me a different character. I'm not sure which I prefer yet, but I love that I have the options.
I only have a couple of MXL 990 condenser mics for my drum OH but they seemed less harsh through this unit. Not that I hated them DI into the PreSonus, but this unit did make them better.
I love the options the unit has. I wanted the extra pre so I could run the outs into a compressor before going into Sonar and the PreSonus only allowed 2 channels of inserts. I was already running those 2 into my ART Pro VLA II for the kick and snare.
This is the 3rd ART unit I've got (Pro MPA II, Pro VLA II, Head Amp 6 Pro). I've had good luck with all of them and would recommend them. I have never used any other tube pre so can't compare.

I was looking forward to using this unit. The high pass filter knob was sticking, like something was keeping it from turning smoothly, but I set it and left it alone so it wasn't such a big deal. I recorded one song that first day. It actually sounding pretty good. But, the next day when I went to use it, the left channel blue led VU meter would not come on. I guess I may have gotten a lemon, but thankfully Musicians Friend has a very customer friendly return policy. The Art is going back and I am going to try something else...

Comments about ART PRO MPA II Reference Series:

Very nice, smooth pre amp......I run this into the first 2 inputs of my Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40, then into Pro Tools 10. This unit has made a huge difference in the clarity and warmth of recorded tracks......have used it for full band rehearsal recordings with just a couple mics up in the room as well as vocal, acoustic guitar and direct bass multi tracking and have been very happy with the results. It definately adds a high end sparkle and clarity that was not there before as well as a nice rounded warmth to the bottom end. I am only sorry I didnt buy two when they were on sale. I would have used the second for the live front end DI on the acoustic guitars with my personal band.

Comments about ART PRO MPA II Reference Series:

Just like the one we have at work, the ART MPAII (this one is the Reference Edition) provides owners with lots of options at a very affordable price, especially with Musicians Friends special price plus free shipping. What a deal!
This one is for my home studio where I do voice over work with a variety of mics. There is lots of gain, plenty of room for experimenting with tube sound and tube load. I run it straight into a modified Tascam DR 680 and the results are excellent. You do have to tweek input and output gain to find your ideal sound and that can take some time.
Here is what I like for the Equitek 100S: input gain about 15, impedence at 200, output gain low at about 5 and I am getting a wonderful warming of this great mic.

THis ia a very solid preamp for home recording at a very reasonable price!

And I for one, like the blue lights on the reference model ;-)

Comments about ART PRO MPA II Reference Series:

This preamplifier works really well for acoustic guitars and basses. We use it for our church guitars to plugin directly into the instrument input on the front panel - the balanced output feeds a long snake into the sound board and PA system.

It is very quiet and makes the guitars feeding our PA sound great. If you want, you can overdrive it and get a nice clean tube amp overdrive sound into the PA.

I know you can buy a more expensive tube pre, but I have to say this is a great Value for the price you can't beat the performance. It's very clean quite and really adds nice warm sounds to acoustic, nylon and steel string guitar direct or through a mic. And my Gretsch Country Gentleman sounds wonderful direct through it.

I shopped a long time for an affordable pre with pro features. I never had an A.R.T. unit before but the reviews were enticing and I was not disappointed. Especially with the Musicians Friend sale discount. Bang for the buck... this is an useful tool.

Comments about ART PRO MPA II Reference Series:

I have been using ART Studio Equiment for a few years now in my Professional Recording Studio. This product is like the other ART Pro level equipment as it is Feature Rich, High Quality, and VERY smartly engineered.

While my studio budget allows me to purchase much more expensive units for the Channel Strips, I have found that the ART units equal and out perform many of the more expensive units.

I purchsed for Features and Sound Quality, and the PRO MPA II Ref Series does NOT lack either!

I have the MPA's and VLA's in EVERY Group insert (BUS)for the mixer, so no matter what channel is sent, the ART units can be deployed.

So, if you have a 4 BUS mixer, get 2 of these - if you have an 8 BUS mixer, get 4 of these, etc.

Bottom line - WORTH EVERY PENNY!

                  MPA PRO II REFERENCE SERIES

                  By David Dzaich

Comments about ART PRO MPA II Reference Series:

So far I have recorded some guitar tracks with this unit. I used a Shure SM57 & a Sennheiser 421 blended into one track. Once I dialed each Mic in individually & got my levels the results were very nice to track with. I disagree with anyone saying replace the Tubes on this unit that is half the reason for this being a limited addition. Art already did that & I have to say the unit is very quite in a good way. I am looking forward to recording Vocals with Dual Condenser Mics & using the side Mic figure 8 option. I highly recommend this product ART makes nice stuff. I also own a Head Amp Pro from them & am very pleased with their products.
This unit has many high end features that are impressive for this price point.
Seems really solid nothing about the preamp seems cheap in term of feel or appearance.
This unit is a Tremondous value for this price. You will be hard pressed to find these kind of features & quality elsewhere at this price range.
