Combination preamp and compressor right at home on your studio desk.

The Tube MP/C (Preamplifier/Compressor) from ART is an ideal combination-recording tool, with a tube-based analog preamplifier and a VCA-less compressor with optical gain reduction, housed in a convenient desktop chassis. Used as a mic/line preamp or as a DI (direct) box, the Tube MP/C is designed to work seamlessly with any recording, sound-reinforcement, or electronic instrument setup. ART's Tube MP/C circuitry is a hybrid design utilizing advanced, solid-state and tube technology.

The preamplifier's active balanced solid state input provides extremely low noise and excellent common mode rejection. The 1/4" high impedance input prevents loading of any connected device making the Tube MP/C perfect for DI or line level applications. The preamplifier's second stage 12AX7a tube runs on a regulated DC voltage providing an additional 20dB of gain.

The compression circuit features a VCA-less design and utilizes optical electronics (Vactrol) coupled with a 12AX7a vacuum tube gain stage for superior musical performance.

    Features
    • Tube-based mic/line preamplifier with up to 80dB of gain
    • Hand-selected 12AX7a tube
    • Optical (VCA-less) compressor circuitry = transparent dynamics control

Comments about ART Tube MP/C Single Channel Microphone/Instrument Tube Preamp:

A great, compact, and easy to use preamp/compressor. I found the tonal characteristics to be a bit brittle, cracky, and fuzzy, especially when used as an Instrument D.I. This all changed when I swapped the tube out for a Russian Made 12AX7. Now it's an incredible piece of hardware for it's size! If you order one, definitely get a new tube with. It takes 2 minutes to install! Here's an example of the difference it makes. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB1LbSzq5Kw&feature=youtu.be

Comments about ART Tube MP/C Single Channel Microphone/Instrument Tube Preamp:

This is a great go-to preamp, and i greatly enjoy having the additional controls beyond what's found on the regular ART Tube pre.

Currently i'm using this piece just to (pre-)amplify a viola player. We're using a cheap clip-on mic on the viola and just needed a usable signal at the (passive) board. This preamp was a lot easier for us to use when time was at a premium. The limiter function is nice to have, as well.

Comments about ART Tube MP/C Single Channel Microphone/Instrument Tube Preamp:

All preamps these days are good...even the ones built in to recording interfaces, etc. This one is not only good, but also extremely inexpensive. Built well. Great first dip in the separate preamp pool.

Comments about ART Tube MP/C Single Channel Microphone/Instrument Tube Preamp:

I wanted to get something to warm up and smooth out my vocal signal through a Shure KSM27 for recording. I found that the mic just sounded a bit dry by itself. I decided to try out a tube driven mic preamp to see what kind of difference it would make. My budget was around $100 so I went with the ART Tube MP/C after seeing decent reviews for their preamps in that price range. The bypassable compression circuit seemed like a bonus as well.

The intended effect of the tube gain on my vocals is definitely there. The tone just cuts into the mix much more effectively and has a nice warmth. The gain control ranges from clean and subtle to fully overdriven, giving you that "telephone" sort of sound often heard in blues-rock. I also ran some instrumental stuff through it (drum & bass loops, guitars, etc.) and really appreciated the added punch and clarity it provided when ran directly into my Tascam digital 4-track.

I was pleasantly surprised by the live application of the unit as well. I run a Shure Beta 58 through it on the way to the board, essentially replacing the mixer's preamp with the ART Tube. The tube gain provides a warmer, more responsive vocal tone and the compressor is great for limiting the signal when I get loud.

Design and construction are good as well, especially in this price range. The level knobs are "dented" and stop at determined spots as you turn them, a nice feature for keeping track of your settings. LED meters for gain, compression, and output level work great for seeing what your signal is doing. The chassis is metal and the connected elements all seem sturdily mounted and of high quality.

Make no mistake, this is definitely in the entry level category of preamps and compressors. You will find far better tone and capabilities as you move up in price range (which quickly gets into the thousands). However, for a cheap and portable unit that provides basic tube gain and compression, I doubt you'll find better.
