I bought this little preamp not long before I submitted this review. I was looking for an inexpensive tube preamp that let me control a little more than just the volume. I found the V3, bought it and I like it very much. It's good for recording, especially when you don't have anything to put your Mics through before going into your recording interface. It's got all of your basic needs such as Phantom power, phase reverse and +20db gain switch. The voicing function is nice to have and most other preamps in this price bracket don't have that.

A common issue I read about in these reviews was it's too noisy. It's not noisy at all if you know how to use the thing. The +20db switch needs to be off. If it's on, it will generate noise just like anything else would when the gain is cranked. Put the Output at 12:00 and you are able to turn the input all the way up without noise. Turn the Output up to much and a slight noise will start to become audible. I think it's worth having especially if you record with any Mic going straight into your interface. It adds a bit of warmth to the Mic.

I have owned 2 and then gave up. My band mate also has one. Great sound, excellent for use with piezo pickups on acoustic instruments -- lifts the gain and warms and controls the sound. Has dB boost and signal inversion to cut feedback. The bad news is the quality control on manufacturing is horrible. Unit 1 developed a high dB hum, Unit 2 had a faulty input adjust pot. My bandmates unit has a faulty Vu meter. A.R.T: get your act together and ship tested products!

Great for the money

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I bought one of these a few years ago to go with a then-recently purchased Shure KSM-32 condenser mic as a phantom powered preamp. I ALWAYS got good tones with this rig, all I had to do was add a slight bit of compression in post-production. For the money, I wouldn't buy anything else. I actually sold mine to a friend to buy one of the two-channel rack versions, but I wish I had this single-channel unit back for live purposes. I may buy another just for that purpose. All-in-all, a great product for the price.

Don't even bother!

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

For the most part, I've had good luck with Art's rack units, but these are so bad I can't believe they are from the same company! Mine worked 5 months and started making a loud hissing sound. Shipped it to Art, warranty repair done. Used it MAYBE 4 times, then put it away for a few years. Please note: It was stored in a hard case, wrapped in bubble wrap. A week ago I thought I'd use it for some guitar tracks..Guess what?..The light is on but nobody's home. It died in ideal storage! I tried another tube..nothing. This morning it went in the trash! I can't believe Art still offers these..total junk. Ordering an M Audio pre. today! This Art unit has too many BAD reviews. It's a shame, really.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I bought this to use as a direct box with my acoustic guitar when playing through house systems at Church and "Open Mic" venues but have added this as a preamp to my bass rig to warm up and fatten my tone. The difference is amazing and I now take it wherever I go. Based upon my experience, I am looking to procure the rack mount version that includes a compressor and parametric equalizer and make it a key part of my new rig!
For what it is, it offers quite a bit. very flexible. has different settings to shape the tone however you want. Controls are very intuitive.
Built very sturdy. The only complaint I have is that the AC adapter seemed to break a little too easily when it was dropped. Got a new one from an electronic parts store and I am back in business.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

The product works great in ' trained ' hands. The signal is clean and very usable.. the EQ selection on the unit is quite nice actually, whole lot of intresting tonalities at begin with. What it misses is a High Pass Filter.Cheers.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I have had this for I think 4 years now... I run my vocals through it and it really warms em up (and anything that can help my voice is important!). As long as the settings are set right, there is no noise from it. Cool thing is, when I travel, I can put it in my bass flight case and use it as a DI if I can't take my amp.

I would buy it again if it went out. I have got my money's worth out of it and it is still going strong.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I bought this thing, because a friend got one. I heard it and it sounded good. Well, I don't know how his sounded so good, mine was noisy as could be. I can't use it for anything. Acoustic? forget about it, you can't hear the notes over the static. Stay Away from this item!

Noisy

By Red Blanchard

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

Right out of the box this unit generates it's own noise with nothing connected to it. The meter jumps erratically, and when I listen to the output it's random static. I put it back in the box, and wonder if anyone else had same problem?

Monster in a Box

By Hood63

from WV

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I had read many reviews about the ART Tube MP V3 mic preamp prior to my purchase. Most of them were positive. I ordered my V3 and have been extremely pleased. This thing is a monster in the box. I hooked it up and could not believe the gain I got out of an economical condenser mic. I have used it on one of my guitars as well and have found a night and day difference every time I use it. The presets are a fast and true to their labels. Simply said in my opinion there is not a better mic preamp on the market anywhere that is even remotely in this price range. Those on a budget, you cannot, I repeat CANNOT GO WRONG. One negative review I had read was that it is noisy. I have not found this to be true for me. Most of my applications are home recording studio based and mostly require whisper quiet equipment. I have found that when the V3 is properly set.....WOW! Crystal clear HUGE FAT sound.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I have owned this for around 5 months and it's still ticking. I've recorded many many takes with this thing with instruments ranging from voice, latin guitar and various hand-percussion. Voicing switch gives plenty of different types of sound from my mic. I also use the TS/TRS input as well for boosting my guitar signal into my computer. It's built very well and has been left on for weeks without it copping out.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

Pretty good for a musician on a budget.I miced my Vox VT20 with this and it sounds pretty warm through my headphones and when I played the recordings back through my stereo. It works well with acoustic too and the presets come in handy.Haven't tried vocals yet or direct input with bass though. The one I have is not noisy at all.I didn't even have to do any noise reduction after recording tracks.I wish this thing had a power switch though.Overall a very good buy.

Great for vocals and more! I put this in my fender Hot Rod Deville effects loop. It livens up the amp nicely. Several of the settings enhance the highs and lows very well. This also allows me to set the volume higher on my amp and use the dials on the ART to control my overall volume. It makes my clean channel come to life!! DO NOT PLUG IT IN TO A SOURCE WITH PHANTOM POWER ON. THIS CAN DAMAGE THE UNIT.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I love this little box. I got mine as a refurb. I use it with a Carvin 100 watt solid state amp and a Crate Power Block and cabinet. It is small, light-weight and it add the tube warmth and harmonics to solid state amps, so that you don't have to shlep around a heavy tube amp. Other players are amazed by the tone, and even non-players can easily tell the difference. I have not tried this with a mic, and I didn't really like the way it sounded with my acoustic guitar, but I really love it with my electric guitars. Maybe I don't have the settings right for the acoustic.I don't know how well it would work with recording because it seems like it might be a bit too noisy, but as I didn't really buy it for that purpose, I am completely satisfied.

Used this to get some tube coloration in my solid-state Ampeg bass rig. Sounded very nice, and the voicings actually work. However, I gave up after the second one that fried for no apparent reason.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

So I have read a bunch of reviews on this pre-amp that weren't very good, and this is after I purchased it, so I was a little worried when I plugged it in. I gotta say, for the money you can't go wrong with this piece of gear! I ran bass, drums, guitar, piano, and vocals through it and it gave me some very subtle, silky smooth tones. If you are ecxpecting a miricle tone box...forget it. If you want to tighten and warm up your tracks, then pick this up!

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I have had this unit for about 9 months now and use it for more things than I originally intended. I find the different voicings very useful. In my home studio this pre amp is used with a condenser for vocals, as a direct box for bass, with a sm57 for snare/hats. For my guitar rig I use my pedals infront of a Crate gx100h and run this through the effects loop. Doing this has aliviated my urge to splurge on a Marshal TSL100 for the time being. For recording yes SOME of the voicing are a bit noisy but most of them are dead silent. Just use the preset appropriate for the application and you will not be disappointed. I will be getting another one (or more) soon so that I can keep one permanently in my guitar rig and keep the others with my recording set up as well as using multiples on the drum mics.

      Studio V3 is Great

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp:

I have used mine for years now and would replace it in a heart beat if it were stolen or lost. I run all of my solid body and arctop jazz guitars through it and into my little Vox Pathfinder 15 watt amp. The added warmth and variable voicing make it possible to go from single coil to humbucking pickups to pretty much anything and get great "tube" tone. I love this pre-amp. There's nothing else quite like it out there.
