This audiophile quality amplifier is primarily intended to power passive studio monitors. If used with a pre-amplifier, Ii would also serve extremely well for a home stereo system, . I'm using mine in the studio with a pair of B&W 610i (Bowers & Wilkins) and I've never heard them sound better. This amplifier makes music sound better than many amps that cost up to 30 times as much. It is extremely accurate, clean and transparent, allowing whatever you feed it to sound exactly as it should. If one does a bit of web research, several audiophile reviewers are similarly impressed with this unit. If you are a critical listener who demands superlative sound, you would do well to hear one with your favourite speakers. To be fair, I did have to return my first one to the dealer, as it had a faulty right channel, but the replacement works fine. I gave it a 9 for quality due to the slight mis-alignment of the level knobs (the indicator notch on the right knob is ever so slightly out of alignment with the level marker when set vertically). Every time my colleagues and I use this amplifier, we marvel over the sound quality and the price.

I purchased this amp back in 2006 for my home studio, and one of the channel outputs stopped working within a week or so? so Musicians Friend took it back and gave me another identical one. Okay, not a problem at fist; sometimes there are problems, and I can deal with that; but then 2 years later, the 2nd amp did the exact same thing; one of the channel outputs stopped working, and now I?m stuck with having to buy another one.I?ve worked in radio for fifteen years as both on-air and technical, and I?ve never seen amps that go bad as often as this model; twice it happened to me, so don?t let it happen to you. I would recommend another brand name.I know how to handle equipment and properly maintain them, and I kept this amp in a well-ventilated rack; there?s no excuse for this.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

This unit was purchased to replace an Alesis RA-300 in which the cheap relay started to become flaky. It was needed to drive JBL 4406 monitors.
[Yes, they're old but I like them.]

Both this unit and the Alesis have similar specs. After unpacking, the A-500 was missiing the right channel. I was all set to send it back when I remembered where these things are assembled. Opening the unit revealed a ribbon cable had come off in shipping. Re-seating the cable made it good-to-go.

The A-500 sounds very similar to the RA-300. However, a scope reveals distortion when the amp is at a low volume. Cranking the pots to full throttle kills the distortion. So, it's best to open up the pots and let the console monitor-out control the overall volume.

There are not too many passive amps out there now. And, I did not want to buy another Alesis for obvious reasons.

Is it a Crown or QSC - no friggin' way! But then the Crown's and QSC's are not passively cooled either.

I think it was Albinoni who said, "There ain't no free lunch"! Maybe it was Mike Nesmith. The mind is the first thing to go.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

I've been running this amp for about 1 year on my A/V editing station. Sounds good and works well coupled with my Alesis monitor MKII.

This output is nowhere near the advertised wattage. If you're looking for a clean 2x100 amp this is a great choice for home studio use.

The gain pots on the front are a little sloppy and mechanical "notches" built in. It just feels cheap. I prefer Bryston or QSC for better rated wattage and a solid build but, this little guy serves it purpose for a small room reference amp.

It does a very good job everything I've thrown at it. I would also recommend this amp for high end on a crossed over system.

Keep in mind this IS NOT a touring amp, it's not designed to power your mains for your band, it's not a DJ amp, it's not really even designed for a large studio environment. I would keep this amp in the home studio category.

I would totally recommend this amp for the "right" application. Seems to be a value product.

We use this amp for our stage system. We play a lot of small bar & grill type places. This amp provides plenty of power for our 4 piece acoustic group. Not a single draw back for 2 mains, 2 monitors and usually 8 mics.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

Ordered the Behringer A-500 to use in a small home studio with JBL reference monitors. I took advantage of the free shipping. Since I was remodeling the studio, I was in no hurry. I took it out of the box a few days later and channel 1 didn't work. Awesome! Called customer service and they were very helpful. However, now I have to send it back - UPS GROUND. When they receive the bad amp, they'll send me a new one - UPS GROUND. Now, I need it and I'm sure I'm looking at 2 weeks turnaround. I'm not too happy about that. The amp sounded fine on the one side but I will follow up when the new one is received.

              risky, but worth a try

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

I purchased one of these for stage monitors, and like another reviewer, one channel crapped out at almost exactly one year - I think it must have a timebomb clock built into one of the chips. Up until that fateful day it worked very well - nowhere near the claimed power, but fine for 4 stage monitors. As it has no cooling fan its great for quiet environments, but I would not count on this amp lasting more than 1 year. For my situation that's still a good investment, which is why I am buying another - besides, I now have a spare channel for the new amp when it craps out a year down the road.

              Behringer vs. Bryston

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

Bought to replace current treble amplifier in a 5 way active crossover system. When purchased we spent a day on Paradgim reference series speakers and comparing to a Bryston amplifier before inserting into the active crossover system. Bryston slightly better on low end, Behringer slightly better on top end. Overall the equal to the Bryston although there will be many who will not believe this so go ahead and spend over 10 times the price for same performance. As Audio Critic said ".....the most incredible bargain in the history of audio..."I highly, HIGHLY recommend using in balanced mode if you have that ability.
