OVERVIEW

An ultra-linear power amplifier popular in recording studios and post-production work.

The Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier embodies true audiophile-grade performance, delivering 2 x 300 watts into 4 ohms or 600 watts into 8 ohms bridged. The overhead keeps you on the safe side, and the Behringer A500's advanced convection-type cooling system guarantees stable, noise-free operation.

The servo-controlled design drives virtually all passive speakers. Precision level meter and clip indicators are provided for accurate performance monitoring. The studio amp's inputs include balanced XLR, 1/4" TRS, and RCA connectors for versatile connectivity. Plus, the speaker outputs give you a choice between professional 'touch-proof' binding posts and 1/4" TS connectors.

To assure years of trouble-free operation, the A500 uses ultra-reliable Toshiba or Fairchild high-power transistors, both known for their rock-solid reputation. In addition to all these features, an independent thermal overload protection system with LED indicators for each channel automatically protects both your amplifier and your speakers. Last but not least, the Behringer A500 employs a high-current toroidal transformer for solid reliability and the lowest noise interference possible.

You deserve the very best in studio power amplification. Get the Behringer A500 Power Amplifier and enjoy reference-class audio and ultra-reliable quality that's super-affordable.

This audiophile quality amplifier is primarily intended to power passive studio monitors. If used with a pre-amplifier, Ii would also serve extremely well for a home stereo system, . I'm using mine in the studio with a pair of B&W 610i (Bowers & Wilkins) and I've never heard them sound better. This amplifier makes music sound better than many amps that cost up to 30 times as much. It is extremely accurate, clean and transparent, allowing whatever you feed it to sound exactly as it should. If one does a bit of web research, several audiophile reviewers are similarly impressed with this unit. If you are a critical listener who demands superlative sound, you would do well to hear one with your favourite speakers. To be fair, I did have to return my first one to the dealer, as it had a faulty right channel, but the replacement works fine. I gave it a 9 for quality due to the slight mis-alignment of the level knobs (the indicator notch on the right knob is ever so slightly out of alignment with the level marker when set vertically). Every time my colleagues and I use this amplifier, we marvel over the sound quality and the price.

I purchased this amp back in 2006 for my home studio, and one of the channel outputs stopped working within a week or so? so Musicians Friend took it back and gave me another identical one. Okay, not a problem at fist; sometimes there are problems, and I can deal with that; but then 2 years later, the 2nd amp did the exact same thing; one of the channel outputs stopped working, and now I?m stuck with having to buy another one.I?ve worked in radio for fifteen years as both on-air and technical, and I?ve never seen amps that go bad as often as this model; twice it happened to me, so don?t let it happen to you. I would recommend another brand name.I know how to handle equipment and properly maintain them, and I kept this amp in a well-ventilated rack; there?s no excuse for this.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

I purchased this to replace an old Alesis RA-100 which had given many years of service (and still works fine). I bought the A500 specifically for the balanced inputs, and due to the many good reviews I found here and elsewhere. Fortunately, mine worked great right out of the box! The balanced ins reduced some hum my system had with my old amp, and the sound through my passive Tannoy Reveal monitors is noticeably clearer and has more depth than before. Definitely a great monitor amp for the money for running passive studio monitors, and I'm sure it would hold its' own even compared to much more expensive power amps!

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

Add to my earlier review. To correctly connect an RCA output to the XLR input, you need a MALE RCA to XLR adapter. Otherwise, you will not be using a balanced cable between the A500 and your RCA connected preamplifier.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

I replaced my Crown XLS-1500 class D amplifier with this. Been an audiophile for more than 60 years and I listen to live music often. I decided to replace the class D with a class AB unit. The crown was excellent at high volume. But it had poor microdynamics. I also had an Emotiva XPA-5 that wasn't as clean as the Behringer A500. I must add that the Behringer also does even better with the balanced XLR inputs. I suppose it might do nearly as well with RCA to XLR cables. To my surprise, RCA to RCA has audible effects on the sound. Different RCA cables sound different, no matter the price. But the XLR inputs produce consistently great results. The blue front panel, mentioned in earlier A500 reviews, has been replaced with a black front panel and it looks fine among my other equipment. With it I'm using A Marantz AV7005 preamp with Tekton Large Pendragon speakers and a HSU VTF-15H subwoofer. The sound is excellent.

These amps are amazing for the price. I use them in a home studio/home theater environment. Passive cooling makes them very quiet for absolutely no noise. With proper speakers they have plenty of power & transparent sound.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

This unit was purchased to replace an Alesis RA-300 in which the cheap relay started to become flaky. It was needed to drive JBL 4406 monitors.
[Yes, they're old but I like them.]

Both this unit and the Alesis have similar specs. After unpacking, the A-500 was missiing the right channel. I was all set to send it back when I remembered where these things are assembled. Opening the unit revealed a ribbon cable had come off in shipping. Re-seating the cable made it good-to-go.

The A-500 sounds very similar to the RA-300. However, a scope reveals distortion when the amp is at a low volume. Cranking the pots to full throttle kills the distortion. So, it's best to open up the pots and let the console monitor-out control the overall volume.

There are not too many passive amps out there now. And, I did not want to buy another Alesis for obvious reasons.

Is it a Crown or QSC - no friggin' way! But then the Crown's and QSC's are not passively cooled either.

I think it was Albinoni who said, "There ain't no free lunch"! Maybe it was Mike Nesmith. The mind is the first thing to go.

Comments about Behringer A500 600W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier:

I've been running this amp for about 1 year on my A/V editing station. Sounds good and works well coupled with my Alesis monitor MKII.

This output is nowhere near the advertised wattage. If you're looking for a clean 2x100 amp this is a great choice for home studio use.

The gain pots on the front are a little sloppy and mechanical "notches" built in. It just feels cheap. I prefer Bryston or QSC for better rated wattage and a solid build but, this little guy serves it purpose for a small room reference amp.

It does a very good job everything I've thrown at it. I would also recommend this amp for high end on a crossed over system.

Keep in mind this IS NOT a touring amp, it's not designed to power your mains for your band, it's not a DJ amp, it's not really even designed for a large studio environment. I would keep this amp in the home studio category.

I would totally recommend this amp for the "right" application. Seems to be a value product.

We were very happy with the timing of receiving the product, it came when you said it would arrive. And the product (power amp) works excellent which the entire team that works with it is very happy with the amp as it has already made a difference in the quality of our sound.

                Thanks so much...
