I've installed several MDX1600s & MDX2600s in a couple of churches & live sound setups over the last few years - If you're looking for a cheap upgrade for your system, they're well worth the small cost. You can inexpensively load up your rack & throw them on any channel inserts that need it. This unit has the enhancer circuit, and it adds some punch to things- but it's not a BBE. I didn't use the limiter much- but it's good to have in case someone drops the mic or whatever, or perhaps for recording. The biggest problem it helped tame were musicians & vocalists that were all over the map volume-wise... if you know how to use it & don't go too heavy- it's reasonably transparent. If you've got lots of cash & only need a channel or two - or perhaps if you do studio work - spend a lot more & get something a bit better. But if your live gear setup doesn't have compression at all - holy cow- quit reading and buy a bunch! Never had one fail yet.

I've had this unit over two years and after an extensive period of time listening back to recordings where I used this in the signal chain- I could tell. Not in a good way, either. It makes everything sound like it's in a tin-can. I'd never noticed it until I'd upgraded my signal chain, monitors, headphones etc but once I heard it- it stuck out like a sore thumb on any audio system I listened to material on after the fact. It does compress and does it's job limiting but the actual audio after-the-fact is still crippled and the unit adds a colored, stressed and canned sound is the only way I can describe it. I guess if you use it to the point you can barely hear it at all would probably suffice if you're looking for very light compression like on acoustic guitars then this should be fine but if you want to make recordings with the same warmth, depth and headroom as the big-boys' compressors well this just doesn't excel here. Honestly, I've heard free DX/VST compression plugins that have gotten better results. This unit has also fizzled-out on me after warranty. I turned the unit on one day and all the lights light up and outputs pure static now from the audio outs. I have had this unit installed in a studio rack where it has not been moved around and I've never plugged the wrong things into it. If you want longevity from something you can rely on- this is just not the best route.

Also great for streaming

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

We use this to process our streaming audio on C89.5 in Seattle and it makes a huge difference to the online sound. We now have more punch, deffinition, and louidness for our streaming listeners to enjoy. It also helps make segways between songs sound cleaner. Great Product, especially for the price.

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

I bought this about 2 years ago and haven't had a single problem with it. I use is for compressing a kick and snare during drum tracking and it works like a charm.

Short-lived Unit

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

Lots of features and cool little lights, easy to use with the auto settings, but short-lived. Most compressors are too hard to operate---not this one. The only problem here is the short life expectancy. The first one I got didn't work right out of the box. The next one lasted a couple of years, but it wasn't used very often. Still another unit crapped-out after a few months. Also: these are NOT repairable. These are made to be disposable. Too bad, because they actually work pretty well.

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

A lot of features for such a low cost unit. I will buy another one. It's done a good job keeping guitars for overpowering keyboards. The gate release option slow/ fast is quick and easy. Overall ease of use and ability to get what I want out of the compressor makes this one a no brainer to buy again.

Not Worth It...

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

I've owned a few of these units. The very first one didn't work straight out of the box. The next one worked about six months, then starting cutting out. This is with occasional, easy use, like during a stereo mixdown. These units are not repairable because they are built with surface-mount technology. Instead of repairing these, they just replace them---IF the unit is under warranty. I also worked in music retail for many yearsdoing all the repairs. The returns on Behringer products was staggering. The broken/defective gear totally swamped the repair department. We dropped Behringer like a hot potato.

Comments about Behringer AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600 Compressor:

I have used this compressor as well as higher cost models from PreSonus and DBX and the Behringer's value cannot be beat. To the the features and metering that this unit offers I would have to pay about triple the price for a better model. The audio quality is more than good enough for most live or even home recording applications.Unless you are using a mic worth over $300, this is the perfect unit for you.
