OVERVIEW

Ultra-affordable guitar-to-computer USB connection with killer amp and effects software.

The Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 interface is an amazing practice tool that lets you connect your guitar to your computer in a flash, giving you the best of both worlds.

The UCG102 guitar-to-USB interface lets you jam and record using modeling amps and effects without the need for any other gear but your guitar. The compact interface links your electric guitar to a PC or Mac computer via a typical USB cable, allowing you to rock with sophisticated software such as the included Guitar Combos Behringer Edition from Native Instruments, Kristal Audio Engine multi-track sequencer and Audacity audio editor. It also features a Headphone output for silent practicing.

Classic Combos*
Native Instruments Guitar Combos Behringer Edition perfectly recreates 3 classic combos. The virtual tube combos have an absolutely authentic, dynamic and pure tone.

Guitar Combo I's popular role model revolutionized British pop music. From soft to distorted, this combo has a uniquely inspiring sonic character.

Guitar Combo II is the epitome of the clean and crunchy blues sound. Over the course of several decades, this warm and unmistakable sound has made a valuable contribution to countless hits.

Based on the famous tube amps that spawned the guitar legends of the late '60s and early '70s, Guitar Combo III embodies the rock sound. Its distinctive and individual tone can be as warm as it can be hard.

Shame on Behringer and Musician's Friend for continuing to market this, without noting the software limitations! I'm fairly computer competent, but have still struggled all morning with trying to get this wretched thing to work. What should be a simple little gadget, requiring little more than plugging in to a USB port, has turned into a time consuming, expeditious tour of internet rabbit holes, trying to locate usable software elements that can all 'play nice' together. And I'm still not there: the software that I have located does not install correctly. Yeesh. Also, contrary to the sales pitch, you don't get to choose a Native Instruments modeled combo, as the included serial number is assigned to one model.

For me, the buying decision here was between this item and the next higher priced units (the Bespeco and the Vox). The Behringer has already consumed more than the difference in price, in time and difficulty. I'll be returning this worse-than-useless thing, and looking into one of those.

It strikes me that it might actually be possible to find and install software components that will allow this to function the way it is supposed to. But it should not be necessary to do that in the first place.

Recommend to a friend? Not hardly. And I'll certainly be a little more careful about making the Behringer choice next time.

Great input device

By Rick Greens

Comments about Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 USB Interface:

If you're not a ham-fisted moron, this device is an inexpensive way to interface your guitar (or anything else with mic-level 1/4" output) with your computer. It makes for flawless digital recordings, and is great for musicians like myself who collaborate with others online. If you are uncomfortable working with computers, have a mental defect, or are a public school teacher, I would recommend going with a different product, or perhaps forgoing any attempts at utilizing a digital input device for your guitar. If you are comfortable doing things like tying your own shoes, putting pants on one leg at a time, or operating a moving vehicle, I assure you, it will work perfectly for you.

There are not any drivers, that I could find, to make this work with windows 8. The software is written for XP. Save yourself the time and money. I'm returning this immediately.

Don't buy it!

By Snake Venom

Comments about Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 USB Interface:

I would not recommend this interface. Better off with IK Multimedia Stealth Plug instead!.
I was trying to use this with Amplitube Metal and #3, but found out that it doesn't work properly with either software. There is too much noise in the background and latency is a major problem. The output of the guitar does not match with the same time as I pluck the strings. I tried different hertz settings but none of them seems to solve the problem.

I hate this thing!!
Well housed and compact, but it does nothing for me if the product does not work properly!!
What am I getting out of something that doesn't work properly??

Was disappointed at first because the ASIO driver on the software disc did not load. Read some other reviews about win7 problems and almost gave up. Went to the Behringer website and downloaded the driver. This thing works great(with the correct driver). Native Instruments Guitar Combo is awesome, I can now play along with Maschine.

I'm sorry to hear some are having problems. Basing a negative review on that, however, doesn't do anyone much good. I've tried this interface on several computers, several operating systems, etc., and it sets up just fine if you do it right. If its not working for you, have someone walk you through it. You don't need Berringer customer support. Any computer geek with a short sleeve dress shirt and a pencil in his ear will do. This thing is what it is, and does what it does very acceptably.

Comments about Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 USB Interface:

To those of you that gave this a bad review, It works fine you just have to setup asio on your system before trying to use it. As far as compatability I've used it with Amplitube 3 and guitar rig with no problems. I run a line out to my amp from the head phone jack on the unit to simulate stereo amp rigs and the sound I get is unbelieveable. If you're complaining about sound quality then I'd say you don't know how to properly set up your amp modeling software. The latest stuff out there can acurately model all manner of tube amps right down to the sag, but getting them to sound good takes a bit of work. There are a lot of variabes and you have to adjust acording to your particular gear. This is probably the best product in this price range and a steal.

Comments about Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 USB Interface:

The Behringer driver is great, but you need to set it up properly; may take a bit of testing. Very IMPORTANT is to set up the driver's "system performance" setting to "rapid" in order to improve latency by a lot. A cool feature I noticed is you can record left channel and right channel separately. I use Mixcraft, and it really helps if you want a clean signal track for adding effects/combos later, or for dual amp/effect chain setting in real time (depending on what DAW you're using).

Comments about Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 USB Interface:

This product appeared to be a very simple, almost plug and play, interface that would let me play my RISA ukulele through my PC and laptop. I have been researching how to make this interface work for about a month. Some users are very lucky and very satisfied. Others, like me, have yet to get a single note out the PC speakers or headphones. It is an inexpensive device, but should still be straight-forward to install. IT IS NOT. Drivers are no longer available at the vendor site. The fact that even this business can not provide concrete installation instructions that result in this device working should be enough to scare anyone off this product. I'll continue to work with it to see if I can ultimately make it work, but I won't be holding my breath. I may be an electronics engineer but this thing has enough settings to scare me off.

This device sounds great. I've been playing for over 20 years and I've been looking for something to hook up my guitar to my Mac. I've only tried it with Garageband but the sound is good and no delays if set up right. It was a little finicky to get to work with Garageband at first but after setting the inputs and then re-opening Garageband it's worked like a charm every time. Haven't tried the software it came with but it sounds great through the amp mods in Garageband. Great product for what I need...and a great price.

I have windows 7 you will have to jump through hoops to get this setup with 7. go to there website to download apps, drivers. took me awhile to get it right. knowing what i know now I would try something else.

works ok with NI Guitar Rig 2 but any other DAW it's useless, latency issues are horrible. I bought it just for a simple link to to use on my laptop for practice and recording ideas but could not get it to work in Sonar or any other DAW. Drivers kept shutting off the audio engine or the latency was so bad as to be pointless.

Worst purchase I've ever made! First and foremost, this product comes with three terrible sounding interface amps. Excuse my french but every amp sounded like crap. They all had terrible sound quality and there was this terrible crackling noise that I spent hours trying to get rid of but you couldn't, and it seemed like all three amps would sometimes get out of tune to my physically tuned guitar. The recording program it came with, Energy X2T, was crap and It took me hours to get it to work on Ableton Live and even then it sounded like crap. I've used other USB cords that are far more user friendly and efficient than this. I spent hours and hours trying to make everything work and get the right sound to come from the amp and my patients was starting to wear. If you want my honest opinion go and purchase a normal instrument USB cable at your local music store, It might cost ya a little more but It'll be well worth it. As far as recordng programs, my suggestion would be to purchase either Garage Band or Ableton Live.
