OVERVIEW

12-input digital rackmount mixer for iPad and Android tablets.

The revolutionary XR12 is a powerhouse 12 input portable/rack-mountable mixer for iPad and Android tablets, and is ideally suited for both live and studio applications, thanks to its four award-winning MIDAS-designed mic preamps, convenient integrated Wi-Fi module for wireless control, plus USB connectivity for file storage, system updates and uncompressed stereo recordings via the USB Stereo Recorder. There are also rack ears and protective bumpers included for added flexibility in your studio and stage applications. The freedom to move around and manipulate all parameters of your mix with the free iOS and PC apps lets you dial in the perfect sound from anywhere in the venue “ or the tracking room.

MIDAS “ The Legend in Sound Quality
Ever since its formation in the 1970s, MIDAS has had a long history of innovation and leadership in the world of audio mixing consoles. Employed by the most famous touring acts and installations worldwide, legendary MIDAS consoles such as the XL4 and Heritage H3000 quickly became industry standards.

MIDAS has earned their impeccable reputation due to their no-compromise approach for audio and build quality and in particular for their Award-winning Mic Preamps which are considered by industry experts as the industry™s best sounding designs. Building on this legacy, the XR12 and PRO Series of Live Mixing Systems continue this great heritage of Award-winning audio quality.

Built-In Tri-Mode Wi-Fi Router
Designed for the ultimate in mobility, the XR12 comes with an integrated Wi-Fi module for direct control of your mixer™s functions “ without the need to setup and configure an external router. The XR12 gives you the freedom to focus on your mix, while allowing you to move about the venue to experience what every part of the audience is hearing. Plus you can adjust live monitor wedges from the artist™s perspective “ or better yet, let them mix their own IEMs and floor monitors via their own tablets.

USB Connectivity and Stereo Recording
The front panel USB type-A connector makes the XR12 not only an amazingly powerful digital mixing solution, but also allows recording your live stereo tracks directly to attached USB flash media or hard drives. Dial in the perfect live mix with effects and zero-latency, while sending a dedicated stereo mix to your thumb drive for recording, or play background music in a break.

Revolutionary Auto-Mixing
When your application calls for a multiple-microphone setup, such as an onstage panel discussion, press conference or courtroom proceeding, etc., it can become a challenge to maintain so many open mics “ and preserve maximum gain and priority for the moderator.

Behringer's X AIR Gain Sharing technology can easily manage fully automated mixes with several live microphones. Based on the legendary Dan Dugan automix system, the XR12™s gain sharing paradigm automatically controls the levels of all selected microphones in real time, without any gating artifacts or noise modulation.

This function dramatically reduces the typical feedback, studio noise and comb filtering challenges that can occur when two, or more mics are in close proximity of each another. X AIR Gain Sharing technology provides a consistent system gain structure, even when multiple speakers are talking at the same time.

4 Onboard X32 Effects Engines
Equipped with the very same FX engines as the X32 Digital Mixing Console, the onboard virtual FX Rack provides access to four true-stereo (8 mono), multi-effects processors including delay, chorus, dynamics “ plus the XR12 can run production-quality, true-stereo reverbs concurrently with 31-band EQ on the main and aux buses, all without the need for any additional hardware.

You can select any combination of high-end simulations of legendary studio effects, such as the Lexicon 480L and PCM70, as well as the EMT250 and Quantec QRS reverbs. Onboard processing means your computer doesn™t have to do the heavy lifting during a mixing session with DAW plugins as the XR12 has a whole studio of FX under its hood.

Custom-designed, and physically modeled after some of the most iconic and sought after processors, all effects run inside the low-latency environment of the X32 mix engine, ensuring flawless performance, flexible routing and the end of cable faults forever.

High-End FX Racks at Your Finger Tips
The XR12 incorporates a vast collection of high-end FX racks available at a moment's notice. These effects emulate some of the most popular and sought after audio-processing effects coveted by top mixing engineers around the world. Choose from over 20 effects each fully capable performers in both live and studio environments.

100-Band RTA for all Channel/ Bus EQ™s
The XR12 includes a high-resolution 100-band Real Time Analyzer (RTA), with full Bar and Spectrograph views. This high-resolution RTA displays the audio energy distribution in 100 frequency bands over time “ capturing a sonogram window of a full 10 seconds.

Switch between the Large RTA view, displaying any available signal in full screen resolution, or the Combined RTA view shown above each of the channel and bus EQ curves “ and see the results of your filtering choices. Additionally, the RTA can be displayed on top of the 31-band graphic EQs in the Main LR or Aux buses.

Uncompromised Channel Processing
The XR12 allows you to achieve the same incredible level of EQ finesse as the award-winning X32 thanks to its 100-band Real Time Analyzer, which is built into every input channel and bus EQ. Visual feedback built into the control app allows you to see and make fast, surgical adjustments to frequencies in need of a boost or a cut.

Every input channel also features Low-Cut, 4-band fully parametric EQ and the same Gate and Compressor dynamics suite found in the X32 “ with one very special addition; you can choose either Expert or Simple functionality. In Expert mode, you can drill down and get your hands on every nuance of your dynamics. Or, if you'e more of the plug-and-play type, Simple mode lets you either select from one of 4 carefully optimized presets “ or load your own channel templates. Add to this 40-Bit, floating-point DSP and you'll experience virtually "unlimited" dynamic range with no internal overload and near-zero overall latency.

In addition to the Main L/R bus for Front of House, 6 Aux buses are provided for dialing in the perfect monitor mixes, or creating a dedicated mix for your USB stereo recording “ complete with inserts, dynamics, and either a 6-band parametric EQ or 31-band graphic EQ. And if all these outstanding EQ options put a smile on your face, you™ll love it even more when we tell you that 100-band RTAs are available for these, too!

MIDI In/Out for Live Performance Controllers
The physical MIDI I/O port on the XR12 mixer can also be used for connecting external MIDI controllers, such as our X-TOUCH or B-CONTROL products, for dynamically controlling channel level, muting and panorama adjustments during your performance. And since the full-featured XR12 also supports the Mackie Control protocol, you easily apply comprehensive remote editing and parameter adjustments via any compatible MIDI devices.

X AIR EDIT (PC/Mac/Linux)
If your application requires a computer for BEHRINGER X AIR mixer remote control, the X AIR EDIT was made just for you. Simply copy and launch the free software with your computer, connect to the mixer via its built-in Ethernet (LAN) connector using a Cat 5 cable (max. 100 m length) “ and all X AIR mixer functions are instantly mirrored on your computer screen. Since your PC screen is larger than the one on your telephone, X AIR EDIT allows you to open and scale more app windows, such as for routing or FX editing “ letting you decide how much information you need at a glance. All touch screens are supported, or you can use a mouse to adjust your physical mixer™s settings. You can even control multiple mixers remotely from a single computer, or create several strategically placed computer stations to control the same mixer. With X AIR EDIT, your PC, Linux or Mac computer becomes your virtual mixer “ both live and in the studio!

X AIR for iPad
Front of House is wherever you and your iPad are “ thanks to the new X AIR app for iPad. Simply download the free app to your iPad, set the BEHRINGER X AIR mixer to Access Point mode and connect your iPad to the XR12 network that will show up. After launching the X AIR app, select the mixer image, and all of your X AIR mixer™s settings can now be adjusted directly from your iPad. You can save your favorite scenes, and load previously stored scenes and presets to/from your iPad or customize your channel layout “ all with the support of innovative drag ™n™ drop functionality.

Download the free X AIR App for iPad from the Apple App Store.

X AIR for Android
Designed specifically for all Android mobile devices (2.2 or higher), which includes tablets and smartphones, the app can be used in one of two modes: full access mixing mode; or bound to a specific aux bus for creating personal monitor mixes remotely on BEHRINGER X AIR mixers. Using this free and easy to learn app, each performer can use their Android device to dial-in the perfect personal IEM or wedge monitor mix, without having to consult the audio engineer for assistance. With the X AIR MIX App for Android, personal monitor mixing just got a whole lot more personal “ both live and in the studio! But it doesn™t stop there “ in full access mixing mode, the app provides control over all channel processing including the RTA overlay, effects editing, storing/loading scenes or presets, and much more “ whether you'e running a 12" tablet or a 5" smartphone.

Using it for fine control over my Kustom PA. Singer/Guitarist. I'm using 2 in and 2 out [mic & guitar] over the built-in wifi, to an 11.6" Android tablet attached to my mic stand. Using the 100 band graphic 20Hz/20kHz I was able to easily see the RTA frequencies overlaid on the graphic EQ and fader out any feedback, especially some high pitched 3k & 4k mic squeal which works better than a feedback destroyer, and save the setting. It has long list of drop down FX, sends, mic pre's, USB recording, compressors, limiters, gain, pan, FX sends, Parametric EQ.. like a large board and rack fx.. sound quality is pristine, 44.1 or 48 [I'm using the 48] resolution. Easy to use, intuitive. I have desktop Macs, PCs, iPads, iPhones, and I'm using Android. Android connected to the X-Air's WiFi in seconds . Very happy with this product. I'm able to get more volume & clarity from my PA than ever before, and, with no feedback. The FX are numerous and sound as good as any hardware I've used. It's a solid & strong, metal enclosure. They've apparently thought of everything. Couldn't be happier.

I purchased the XR12 last July after waiting 5 months (!) for the item to be shipped. I believe I was one of the first users of this particular version of the Behringer digital mixer line in the US. I use the mixer for my rock band (mostly for vocals), and it has resulted in improved sound for us, primarily because it has per-channel parametric EQ and compression. Along with its compact size and wireless remote control, it is really an excellent choice for us.

I am only rating the product a 3 because of the poor documentation and app support. The product comes with no user documentation at all other than some information regarding I/O and basic wireless setup. Of course, you cannot use the product without additional software and you cannot use the software without documentation. I had to create an account on the Behringer website and ask questions on a forum to find out that the only software documentation was a Behringer web site wiki (meaning you cannot download a local copy). Even then, the documentation is minimal and only describes what the controls do, not why you would use them. There is no documentation for effects. I spent hours with a signal source and speakers, tediously tracking the signal paths in the mixer in order to compensate for the lack of support. The terms used for different controls and buses changes from app to app and are not common.

Finally, I only recently learned that the iPad app is not fully functional and only allows control of a small subset of the mixer options. Sure would have been nice if Behringer would have made that clear in the documentation, but then, they would have had to provide some.

I have used many, many products over my lifetime and I have to say that the XR12 is one of the most poorly document products I have ever used. The only way to properly use the product is to experiment with it. If you are up for that, then it can do some amazing things for the price.

Typical for Behringer, great design and build with minimal documentation. Yes you can go look for videos and there are a lot BUT it would be better if there was a simple link(prominently listed in the thin getting started guide) to a well organized resource of written and video info, docs, lessons etc

The only reason for 4 stars and not 5: when using the app for control, my iPad will disconnect from the selected wifi router to select and control the mixer. I bought the mixer to use with my Sonos system, which requires a network connection at all times to operate. The work around was to buy an app for for my iPhone, which I use to control the Xair, while the iPad is still connected to my wifi router for the Sonos. Behringer has no app available for the iPhone..

Digital mixers now days consists of many components inside (preamp, mixer, DAW, FX send etc) and you can control them elegantly. For me as a beginner in music mixing, it is a great product which comes with a nice software with presets for controls like EQ, gate and comp. The software has a meter tab which helps you to get a big picture on what is going on inside the mixing. I did few mixing and recorded on the USB drive. I would say, it sounds better than using a DAW and record using a PC.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR12 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

As a musician and sound person, I always hated that I couldn't justify using a large digital board for Karaoke. Singers just sound better through good pre-amps, EQ's, compressors and some effects. But there was no way I was lugging around that much outboard gear and I can't justify an expensive and large digital console for these events.

The X Air gives me all the outboard gear and controls I need in a two space rack. Since all the computer processing takes place in the hardware, my laptop can easily handle the demands of controlling the mixer and running my karaoke programs. There is a noticeable sound improvement over my trustworthy but plain Mackie board and the singers love having some delay and reverb on their voices. The compressors also make my job MUCH easier!

The only downfall is the user manual was terrible. Since I have time on an X32, the learning curve wasn't too bad for me once I was able to figure out how to connect it to my laptop.

I will likely get a second one for my other karaoke system. This has made my product better and my work easier for a great price!

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR12 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

Some how I got to be drummer and sound guy, which means its not always convenient to place a traditional mixer where I can get to it. This solves the problem! I had to try 3 different tablets before I found one that did not display "signal" (yellow bars in the meters) when there was nothing plugged in. Then when there is actual signal, the meters are wrong and everything goes into the red. I finally found a tablet that works properly but beware, not all Android tablets will work. But ultimately the remote capability is such a convenience that I was willing to work through these issues instead of just sending it all back.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR12 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

We're a 4 piece acoustic band and everyone sings and some play multiple instruments. The effects choices are huge and the best thing about the unit is you have it on stage where you can use short cables, and no need for a snake. In fact, if you have powered FOH and monitors, you don't need anything else. Also, once you find a sound you like, save it to the unit and/or to a file on your computer. The XR 12 only has 4 vocals pre-amps so it's really the minimum for us. We use 2 foldback monitors and since we are all using OnSong on our iPads for our charts, we can do our own monitor mixes through Aux 1 & 2. We could also use the headphone L/R for two more Aux channels so we could all have individual mono IEMs if we needed/wanted to. I guess the downside is with power and flexibility comes a lot of learning. Get ready to spend lots of time on the Behringer wiki and the Behringer forums to explore everything it can do.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR12 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

The first day I hated it and was ready to return it. By day 4 after watching at least a dozen videos I loved it. It's quieter then the Behringer mixer I had. I was able to use effects and channel EQ and compression to get better quality sound than before. Tried a second iPad on the mic stand to adjust levels while singing and playing guitar. Too slow for during song but works well in between. I mostly play with one singer (with harmonizer), guitar, bass and backing tracks. I set up a monitor mix out of aux to a Behringer B212D, with a cheap cable had some noise, put in a quality cable and was quiet. Experimenting with direct quitar input to the hi Z input and back out aux2 to the guitar amp, to get guitar volume control withou using a mic. the XR12 is well worth the price for the effects and flexibility, and sound quality.

If I could undo this purchase I would get one of the larger units so I would have more than 4 mic inputs. Great for my solo stuff but that's about it. Also needs monitor XLR sends.

This baffled me at first, but I stuck with it for a day or two and got it figured out.

Even if you're in a band with no one with any technical know-how, buy one of these anyway and pay someone to teach you to use it. The units are a positive bargain, and when you add the fee for the technician it's still half the price of a competing unit --- and you'll be able to do your own sound mix for the rest of your bands career!
