I had tryed a heil pr20 , sm58, an EV 767 and an EV pl80 ....I found I liked the old SM58 better on my voice ( which is very MIddy) . So naturally when I came across this cheap Behringer competitor I had to see if it would be a usable sm58 clone/ backup/ replacement. Here is what I found plugging them in one after the next , again and again , into the same mic cord . The sm58 has less bass. The Behringer is "hotter' at the same settings. They both do well with feedback but its hard to tell which one is better because the sm58 needs to be turned up quite a bit ( 10-15%) to meat the level of the Behringer. They are NOT identical as some reviewers claim. The sm58 seamed to be "smoother" and "flatter" but also "tamer" and a bit boring. (remeber, the sm58 was my favorite so far in my mic search) , the Behringer has more of an "aggresive " sound to it. It made my voice sound more "exciting" ,and more "rock n roll" right off the bat. The sm58 sounds a bit "polite' in comparison. It seamed like I would need to put 20% more umph into my vocals to get the same sound as the behringer. The shure also "grabs" a frequency in my voice that does NOT make me sound so cool, the behringer on the other hand seams to grab a bit more low-mid gravel While being less sensitive to that undesireable frequency. When I originally tried the Heil and the EV mics I felt they only picked up about 2/3 of my voice , I was always listening for something that just wasnt there, Which is really anoying, the shure sounded like it caught about 85% of what I thought I sounded like. Now I hoped the XM8500 would do "as good" for (cheap) and I would be thrilled with the purchase......But it really flatters my voice . I hear just what I hoped to hear from other mics. it sounds full and tough, with a nice bite to it. I feel more Natural singing into it as apposed to feeling like I have to push my voice in sertain areas to make it sound "right" in the monitors, with other mics. PLEASE NOTE, I have yet to use it live. BUT , in a simple A B test I like the behringer better on my voice, I feel like I have to put extra effort into the shure but the behringer kinda gives me a "boost" . I don't know if that will translate in a mix or not. For the money it is great !!!! It isnt a shure clone but DOES work better with my sound (gravely male rock vocals, ) . Its close to the sm58, but different. IF it sounds right live and holds up to abuse,... then its my new # 1.

The Behringer XM8500 has been billed by some as an SM58 copy. If you buy this microphone on that premise, you will be disappointed. It doesn't sound like that. This microphone is very bright and works beautifully as an acoustic guitar microphone or vocal microphone where brillance in sound is key. I used this mic for background vocals at a church service where I played guitar and sang. The sound engineer told me that he was constantly turning down the HIGH EQ on the mixer console. This is what I experienced in my recording studio as well. As I mentioned before, I loved this microphone on acoustic guitar. The proximity effect is about the same as a SM58 and you can get some great thump on an acoustic instrument with close miking. But as with most cheap microphones that exhibit the high treble nature of this type, miking electric guitar amps was out of the question. Everything came through buzzy and thin. It would be my recommendation to pass on this microhone if you're looking for a workhorse mic. If you want something specialized for instruments which need enhanced brilliance, this mic is so cheap, you can't afford not to try it.

Better tham my SM58

Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I record and perform, and have been using a Sure SM58 for a long time.So my girlfriend starts taking singing lessons and wants to do a duet, so I figured getting her a separate mic was a good move. I said "Get a $20 mic, and if it sucks, then we'll upgrade you." After looking at other reviews, we picked the XM8500.I set the XM8500 up a few feet away from my SM58, grabbed my axe and started working with both mics. I hate to say it but I like the inexpensive Behringer better than my workhorse Shure. The Behringer is more forgiving with spikes in vocal pressure. Not much, but enough to eliminate the occasional ?boom? I can throw into the mic. Also, being a baritone, the Behringer lacked the Shure?s bottom-end boominess (add my baritone, good wind and some proximity effect and the SM588 come though louder and deeper than thunder).Otherwise, I cannot hear a dime?s worth of difference between the two. The Behringer has good end-to-end frequency response, a solid feel, and getting it for 1/5th the price of an SM58 doesn?t hurt.My only complaint (and it is a nit pick) is the mic stand clip. It is an odd duck in shape and the smoothness of pushing the mic into it. Not a biggie for me since I have a guitar hanging on my neck while performing. But someone who walks a stage with mic in hand might not like the rather rubbery and tight clip. Perhaps after a week mine will loosen-up and I?ll quit complaining.Bottom line: Unless you either need a specific mic for a specific vocalist or style, or you just like wasting cash, then the Behringer XM8500 is a great mic at a great price.

Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I took one apart to mod it.
The highs are really intense but set just below wispy. I added a capacitor to low pass the mic so I can stop cutting my mixer to -15 and another -10 in software.
Now at 0 on the bus it sounds ideal for guitar. If I take it up to around 10, it returns to the stock tonal amplitude. Around 3 is ideal for my voice.
For guitar it's low noise characteristic is in regard to transients. Sloshing treble from scooped tones or numetal and industrial treble boosts. It eliminates the risk of the "static" white noise sound these tones have appearing in the entire bandwidth.

I'm an electronic engineering major with many years experience as an amateur. You can disregard 99% of what you hear about audio in general.

This mic is very well engineered and very very tough. This is not Behringer's fisher price quality guitar gear. This is a very high end mic very much equal to any $$$ "legendary" cardioid.

Absolutely road worthy.

I've been miking some Jensen MOD1050's
What comes out of those speakers is exactly what I'm hearing through my headphones in playback.
My highs are very dense and detailed but all tonal ranges come across equal in amplitude with a dark texture.

For my particular voice, the low pass capacitor mod was the problem solver. If you don't have a pricey condenser or can't afford one, which I do, this mod turned it into the cardioid rival. It just needs a good preamp to give it ample gain.
A tube preamp?
I'm not so sure about that!
It's a very warm, dark mic with a full tonal body.

If you want warmth with a dark texture while providing full range tones, this mic does it.
The darkness makes it very commanding and dominant.
This mic is for the alphas male or female.

The mic is absolutely not for everyone.
Nothing you do with your EQ will get rid of the dark texture it gives all tonal ranges.
It's the metalhead and shred guitarists dream. The dark blues singer and guitarist's long lost love.

It's not chimey. It's not jingly. It's not twangy.
It's dark and huge lungs. Extremely smooth, dominating and sultry. Intended for raunch and sleaze be it voice or instrument. For domination and force.
This is the mic of a conqueror.

    Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I've been a gigging musician for 30+ years, a radio guy for 25 years, and ran sound for bands. I've used a lot of microphones over the years, and the most used mics in my work have been Shure SM58s & Beta 58s. These Behringer mics are so close to a 58, it's ridiculous. I've done A/B comparison recordings with these vs. the Shures under various conditions and it's extremely difficult to tell which is which. If anything, the Behringers might be a tiny bit "hotter" than the Shures, but that's about it. Adjusted to the same level, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. As far as build quality, I've been gigging for several years with them, and they've been bulletproof as any Shure I've used. They are in my opinion, a great vocal mic and a spectacular deal.

      Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I've used these as a musician for about 8-10 years as well as Shure Beta 58s and honestly, they are virtually the same mic at 1/5th the cost. I've done A/B comparisons in a recording studio and if anything, the XM8500's are slightly hotter than the Shure Beta 58s, but otherwise the same. I also use them vs. Shure 58s, in my everyday radio job and I swear by them. These are staggeringly great dynamic mics for chump change. Get 'em while you can! They are seriously excellent mics.

I dropped this mic down a flight of stairs, an entire flight of fifteen steps. While I was cringing and wincing at each thump, I wondered what the mic would sound like afterwards.

I didn't have to pic up any pieces and it sounded as great as ever when I fired it up. If it hadn't happened to me I wouldn't have believed it.

                Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I have owned one of these mics for about five years and just bought a second. My primary uses for this mic are as an announcement mic at events or a vocal mic at small live performances. The mics are quite durable; I have never had any problem in over 100 nights of use. I've used SM58's for decades and have tried other lower end AKG standard and Nady wireless mics as well. I would put this mic just below the SM58 in overall quality and above the other value mics I have tried. This mic sounds much better and is much sturdier than the VHF Nady wireless mics I have tried. The sound quality isn't as high as an SM58 but you would have to have a very discriminating audience for them to notice any difference in the sound between the two.

I bought two of these mics, not knowing what to expect, as they are relatively cheap when it comes to miss. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they came with hardshell cases and foam inside, as well as an extra mic clip. When I used one this morning, it was clear as a bell, no feedback, and as good as any of my Shure mics - I would buy these again.. wow - great miss

I still have my SMs for my snooty brand name friends and clients, but i still sneak these in when no one is looking, and no one can tell... If this thing had a on off switch, all other mic company's would be hurting...

                        Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I used this mic for practices and shows. I was surprised to find that it makes virtually no handling noise. Worked exactly as you'd hope with no issues.

                          Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

I bought this mic because I had to replace one that I had lost. I myself use a Crown headset but use a hand mic for my guest performers who sit in on my show. I was about to buy a more expensive mic when this one caught my eye. I figured for the money, I couldn't go wrong. As it turns out, this is a gem. Not only for the price but is a good product. Don't be afraid of this mic. A friend of mine tried it and bought two. Even if you don't like it for live performances (I can't imagine why), it's great for studio. Low handling noise. I'm going to take a closer look at other Behringer products.

                                Comments about Behringer XM8500 Microphone:

My family has always used the workhorse SM58s because they stand up to the rigors of performances. However, a fellow that sat in with my husbands band was using a XM 8500 and I was blown away with the quality of the sound. He said it has been a good, sturdy mike so I'm giving it a chance. I love it so far but have not had it out on the road yet. I've been using it for practice and have been very pleased. I haven't really tested it's durability-it may be very durable but I've not personally tested it on the road yet.

I fell for the positive reviews and ordered one of these a couple years ago. It's a pretty bad cheap mic, don't understand what all the hype is about. Mine distorted easily and sounded thin and brittle. Definitely NOT a 57 or 58, that's for sure. It's junk, I never bothered to return it. Wouldn't recommend it for anything beyond speech or karaoke.
