I bought it because I had to quickly record trumpet lines and I didn?t have an interface. Hardware: iMac, dual core 2.0 GHz processor and 4 GB or RAM. OS 10.5.8. Software: Garage Band. Mic: Shure SM57.Pros. For recording trumpet with an SM57 it was perfect. Clear sound, low noise, LOTS of signal. With the gain a little over half way on the Icicle and about 58% in Garage Band I got hot horn lines with gain to spare.Cons. The gain knob has no dial or indicators for how far you have turned it ? it has to be done by feel making it almost hard to duplicate your settings exactly. This could be improved with a knob with an arrow and a marked dial so you can see where it?s set. It also feels a bit cheap ? it?s lightweight and feels almost fragile. Treated with care it?s fine, but I doubt it would take much abuse before it would break. For what I needed it was perfect ? simple plug and play, so for that, I gave it a 5 rating. Otherwise, I couldn?t rate anything else above a 4.

I used the Icicle for a few ours and it worked fine. The glowing LEDs were a very cool touch, but having the enormous extension off the end of my already bulky condensor mic was sort of akward. At any rate, when I was done using it, I went to (very gently) pull the xlr end of the icicle out of the microphone. I hit the release button and pulled a little. The XLR end of the Icicle came completely off, and fell to the floor, and broke the 2 single wire connections. I was able to strip some of the wire and reconnect, but boy was it a hassle. I wouldn't recommend this product unless you REALLY dig glowing blue lights.

Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I liked the fairly wide frequency range bewtween the different mics that I use it with. However, there's enough latency to throw you off in tracking, so now I use it to lay down Group tracks before coming back to a straight line input off the board for all the overdubbing. Sounds good with most of the mics I have- I've never had a problem with my 4040.
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I'm glad I picked this little device up for recording on the road.
I used this with a dynamic mic and a studio mic. It worked very well. I like the ease of portability.
It works as advertised.
Very good product for the value.
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I had this for a little while. It worked perfectly fine with my MXL 990 condenser mic. No background noise, pretty clear recording, however, I stepped up from the MXL to an Audio Technica AT4040 and all it would record is horrible humming and popping and static. Tried it on a friend's Shure PG48 and same result, but it still worked with the MXL. Don't know how to explain that. So i'm neither here nor there on this product. For the price, it has all the right features (48V PP, Gain knob), Maybe mine was just faulty.
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I have used this converter before. It can be a quality+ outcome depending on how you use it.
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
while it is nice to be able to take it out of the packaging and immediately start recording.. the quality is sub par. Also this only worked with my lower end condenser (MXL 990), but when i plugged it in to my AT4040 all i got was hissing and terrible noise, also I wouldn't suggest plugging this directly into a mic because these are notorious for damaging mic pins. However, it is a cheap way to start recording if your on a MAJOR budget
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I had been using the mic in on my macbook, but it started buzzing. I picked this up looking an apogee One which wasn't out yet. I've tried mic-ing my blues junior with an SM57 and my acoustic with an old RE20. Both sounded great! The directions say not to plug it directly into your microphone; you need an xlr cable. It is cheap plastic.

Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
Got it in the mail, plugged it in, and in my dead quiet room my headphones we're spitting out the loudest, ugliest digital noise I've ever heard with my guitar quietly behind it in everything I recorded. Would not recommend if you are looking for a fast clean way to record.
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
Granted, I have only used my for a few recordings so far, but I've been amazed with the clarity. This is a no-brainer--I just plug it into my Mac and use GarageBand. My mic is a Perception 100, and the clarity I've been getting, particularly on vocals, is astonishing. I've owned lots of disappointing home recording gadgets, and this doesn't seem to be one of them. Idiot-proof with great sound--what more could you ask for?
Comments about Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp:
I needed a convenient way to connect my Shure Beta 58 to the computer and the Icicle works fine. No drivers needed, just plug the mic cable XLR in one end and the USB cable to the computer, select the input device and you're set to record. The gain knob is also a nice feature to if you connect to line level devices.
