I've owned a few of Boss' Digital recorder. Before I purchased the Br1600, I had and still have the Boss Br1180 CD which is close to ten years now. While looking for a new Hard disk recorder, I searched for multitrack recorders that accepted SD/CF memory cards. I was told by a computer tech that hard drives last longer than SD/CF cards.Since I was happy with the 1180 being easy to operate, I purchased the BR1600 for my small basement studio. The buttons have an easier and a more direct approach. For example the EQ, reverb and pan are not embedded under menus like my BR1180CD but are individual buttons.

Pros and cons

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I agree with a previous poster that the number of tracks is misleading. There are truly only 11 tracks once you figure the stereo tracks and 9/10 the final mix track. That is the only thing I can find fault with on this unit. On the positive side, and there are many positives, the quality of the recordings is excellent. Ease of use, well, you'd better read the manual, and once you have, a whole world of recording pleasure is open to you. I bought the David Wills BR1600 CD instructional DVD and voila, it opened me up to the ability to do things I only dreamed were possible. For the sound quality, and some great recordings, this is the unit to buy. I have owned mine for 5+ years and if it were lost or stolen, I WOULD go right out and purchase another.

Track Number Misleading, But Good Product

By Music Man-msNJ7

from Sacramento, California

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

Since I feel the title of this product is misleading, I felt compelled to submit this review. I want to warn those that would like to have the flexibility of many tracks, which this product may not offer. As such, the focus of this review will be on the tracks.First, tracks 1 - 8 are "single" tracks. You can pan, left or right, whatever is recorded here. You can also select two tracks, such as "1 & 2" to create a stereo track where you can still pan EACH track. This is where I was a bit frustrated...Tracks 9 -16 are "stereo" tracks, meaning you MUST select tracks 9/10, 11/12, etc. You CANNOT separate the tracks for separate recording, which, to me, means that these stereo tracks do NOT have TWO tracks...this should be consider ONE "stereo track." This means that you cannot individually pan "track" 9, 10, etc. And, it gets worse...if you are interested in using the programs mastering software, you can't have anything on tracks 9/10, because that is the track that is bounced to for mastering. This means there are actually only 11 TRACKS (i.e., tracks 1-8, 11/12/, 13/14 & 15/16). The above being said, the effects are great and the quality of the sound recordings are great, which you can read about in the product information and/or other product reviews. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be purchasing another unit when I can that actually has more "true" tracks.

THE BEST PORTABLE DAW PERIOD!

By BRMan

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I've owned many different types of recording equipment and I absolutely love the ease of use with this machine! I find it so convenient to record on and import or export .wav or .aiff files on the fly, plus I can take it with me anywhere as an all in one solution. I just put it in a case and I'm out the door...voila! In live situations I love the auto-calibration. It saves me time and I've made some awesome recordings. If you're thinking about buying one of these yourself. Do it. You can't go wrong with this unit!

I've Owned This Thing For Two Years

By Grog

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I'll give it a solid 7 for the work I do on it. Which is mostly laying down guitar tracks (AWESOME guitar presets) and vocals (serviceable vocal presets) then taking the tracks into my computer and playing with them there, then often taking 'em back to the Boss for mastering. You can adjust all the presets like you would your chain of stomp boxes . . . much of it's capabilities I never use (pitch correction, phrase tracks, bass thing, i dunno). I like it a bunch and use it all the time. That said, there's one annoying peculiarity: I need to initialize the HD after each session. The reason? A session starts and Boss tells you you have, like 330 hours, 28 minutes of free space. You lay down a couple of tracks and when you look again it's suddenly down to 7 hours remaining. Do a little more and it's down to 15 minutes. Any more and its HDD FULL!!!! Which is irritating beyond belief. If you don't mind doing most of the work in your puter this Boss will provide clean clear wonderful raw tracks for your Cubase sessions lol SEVEN STARS

Rock Solid Easy

By Nightwinflyer

from MT

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I have owned this recorder for almost 5 years now and have recorded hundreds of hours of audio on it. Mine is Version 2.0 with a 40 GB hard drive, which still holds a lot of data. I have upgraded my studio and use this mainly to import unprocessed guitar and bass into Cubase 4.0, as well as record live drums (for this, it can't be beat-no pun intended!).Simply connecting a USB cable allows you to import and export audio to a computer. This process is a little slow and time consuming, but there is a program you can buy to speed the data transfer. I have not used it, but reviews seem good. One thing I have ran into is when the hard drive begins to reach capacity, it will not transfer files, and will sometimes not burn them to a CD either. I am sure to have my data transferred and "initialize" the unit to a clean state often. This unit can be used as an audio interface with Cubase using the digital coaxial output to your PC (I am using an M-Audio 192) so you can record guitar direct as well as vocals. The BR1600 even gives you the option of recording dry, while monitoring wet, which gives great flexibility for changing sounds in the mix. I really hate to commit to a sound now, as adding real drums sometimes changes the way the guitars fit into the song, making them useless. This unit is a songwriters dream, as you can simply program a drum track using the drum templates built in and start going within 5 minutes. The unit will allow you to produce very good quality songs, that if you spend some time will sound far better than a "demo". In fact, some of the songs I've recorded with this unit, I haven't been able to reproduce with higher end gear. It does not give you the high level of precision and options that Cubase 4 does, but it is very capable. For live drum recording it should be considered for sound quality, ease of use, and portability. This truly is a recording studio that covers all the bases very well.

addressing issues below

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I've had the unit for over 3 years, and just read these reviews. Some of them are ridiculous. For instance, someone wrote that the punches are audible. Cmon now, they're audible on pro tools if you don't get a perfect punch spot. One person wrote you can only have 12 playback tracks at once. True, but 4 of those are stereo tracks which you can mix the other tracks too. I like to mix the drums down to one stereo, the guitars ect... basically giving it unlimited playback. And why so many problems with the manual? The unit is so self explanatory I've only had to go to the manual for help a handful of times and found my answer within moments.

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I have had this recorder for 3 years and it still amazes me.There are allot of good reviews on here already, so what I will talk about is the test that I did.I took a wolfgang straight into the recorder using the soldano amp. Then I recorded another v-track (which by the way is a a huge plus having virtual tracks, up to 255 I think) using a shure sm 57 mounted about 4 inches from the speaker of my 5150 combo. The results?I'm amazed at how close the Boss sound is to the real thing. It is almost scary how identical they sound. It has a built in GT6 processor, and that should tell you something, as Boss has been putting out quality sound for years.I will also tell you that the actual miked recording has something that the Boss doesn't have. I don't even know how to describe it. The recorded guitar is just like on the verge of going off the deep end, almost out of control, in a good way. The Boss sound is like having traction control on your car, never allowing you to get sideways with it.Regardless, the tone is so close that this makes for a great sketchboard with the onboard stuff. The recorder handles miked instruments quite well and you have 8 inputs to capture at once. When you are sitting there staring at this thing in front of you, it's hard not to grin and smile and think of all the possibilities.

A most logical digital recorder

By BluesPicker

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

In the past few years, I've gone from a used 4-track Tascam PortaStudio cassette recorder, to a clunky-but-functional old Fostex digital machine, to this new Boss BR-1600CD. I haven't spent a lot of time recording, so I'm still learning as I go. But if there ever was a machine that can inspire new ideas and songs, and elevate the possibilities for your songs to a new level in quality, this one is it. All things considered, the BR-1600CD is a well-thought-out recorder. The first time through some of the procedural steps, might seem complicated at first, but they're quickly learned and make a lot of sense. Once you master a few simple functions, many of the other operations are easy to figure out on the fly, as they follow the same pattern. In addition, there are number of instant buttons for things Boss seemed to know we'd use more often. The guitar/amp/bass/vocal processors are amazing. You can get a Marshall wall sound without making the folks in the next state deaf. There's great clarity and separation as well.I can record song ideas in some basic form as fast as on a casette machine. Is this more complicated than, say, a Tascam tape PortaStudio? Well, yes. But you are limited to only a few basic functions with the analog machines. When you consider the powerhouse this machine is, and what it can do for your recording, it's understandable that it might seem like a complicated recorder to operate. Compared to my old Fostex, this one is a breeze. If you want a true "studio in a box", look no further than this guy.

BOSS is just amazing

By The Mandarin Menace

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I have owned the BR-8, and w/o opening the manual, I was able to record a song within 2 hours. The BR-1600 is the BR-8 on 'roids. You're able to track the whole band, and can produce great sounding songs immediately. It's great for recording multiple vocalists who need condensor mics. My only gripe about the BR-8 was the graininess of the reverb. The BR 1600 reverb chip and/or algorithm has improved leaps & bounds. It's not as smooth as the Yamaha AW2816. However, you will completely achieve a better sound due to the great sounds afforded by the BOSS COSM effects. More than a mere toy, acoustic guitars sound chorused & shimmering through it. Bass guitar rumble & sustain. You will not be disappointed!

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

This unit is very user friendly and intuitive compared to other Roland products I have used. It is great for the professional songwriter that wants to experiment creatively in a friendly environment. The drum programming is a bit complex and obliquely described, but that is a small downside for the overall quality and features provided.

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I think this is one of the easiest to use digital recorders on the market in it's class. If the A/D converters were a little better this unit would be unbeatable. Simple to use, very good sound quality, packed with features, and easy on the wallet. I would highly recommend this unit for both someone new to recording and for someone wanting to step up. I recently traded my BR1600 for an upgrade to the Roland VS2400CD and regret it. If you're thinking of buying it, it's the best in its class.

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

The Boss 1600 is a super machine. I did my homework before purchasing and I'm glad I did. I just changed over to digital from 4-track. The manuals are very easy to understand and very detailed. I cannot think of a single application that I would want to add to the BR1600 that isn't already on board. The only addition that I am using is a tube driven mic preamp that really helps with the warmth of the vocals. For the money, you are not going to find a better Digital recorder.

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I decided to wait a while after I had owned this item to write a review so that I may get the full experience. After 3-4 months this is what I've deduced. This unit is absolutely amazing. The ease of use is phenominal. I have worked with pro tools among other platforms and while those are very professional platforms it's just not the same as that old style feel of punching record and play and jamming out. In regards to a single person or even a band making their own demo CD, this unit can't be beat. The vocal and guitar effects while not the best that's ever been made are very useful. My favorite features are the drum and bass machines which are amazingly realistic(I would rather play myself but am kinda cramped for space) and the loop phrase import. This is really one of those things that you need to et the basics down and then dive right in only relying on the manual for a specific function. All in all, can't go wrong with this one.

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

I bought this recorder after doing a lot of research on several digital recorders. With all of the great features this thing has it was a no-brainer. It is pretty easy to get recording, and the manual is great. The large display is perfect. The recordings that I have made sound great. Vocals and guitar are fantastic. The drum machine sounds great as well.My only problem that I am getting noise from the hard drive through the outs and headphone outs. I returned the recorder and am waiting on a replacement. Supposedly some went out the door with "loud" hard drives. I'll write back with the results on the new one.

Boss Br-1600 Review

By Samuel Farrell

from Madison, WI

Comments about Boss BR-1600CD Multitrack Digital Recorder:

The Boss Br-1600 is quite a progressive unit and can be used to make some very, very professional recordings. That being said, the unit is (as is any piece of equipment), only as good as the person using it. A lot of the features, including the vocal tool box, are, sadly, worthless. The onboard amp simulators sound decent, but sound overly digital. What IS amazing about this product is the other effects, namely the compression and hte mastering toolkit. The tracks and memory are great assets, and anybody using this machine who isn't depending on the unit solely for tonal options is going to end up with a great sounding recording.
