Good overall compressor

Comments about dbx 1046 Quad Compressor Limiter:

This unit is a great unit if you're limited to rack space. It is decently transparent when used live and the settings aren't too extreme especially using overeasy. It's great to use on vocals and other instruments that need to stand out and/or be smoothened out. On drums it's ok too getting a nice even bass drum, snare, etc sound in hard knee mode. It'd be better with attack and release for different sounds and "pumping" or not.

Overall, the unit is good if you're limited to rack space and need to compress a few channels in your mix. I highly recommend it as a pretty decent unit
Easy to use compression settings. You don't have to deal with attack and release but that can be a bad thing. Good for beginners on using compression. Has 4 channels of compression for the one unit (obvious).
The build of the unit feels good and sturdy. I've read people having problems with LED's and losing channels but I haven't had problems with how old my unit is.
It's a little too expensive for the quality you get. Definitely worth trying out though.

Nice little unit

Comments about dbx 1046 Quad Compressor Limiter:

Lots of bang for the buck in a single-rack form factor. But it does color your sound and isn't bulletproof. We have two of these little guys in two multi-purpose lecture/performance halls and they make a world of difference with minimal configuration. LED indicators give helpful indication of gain structure and reduction. The limiters are a nice backup, just in case something crazy slips through. My favorite feature is the "soft knee" button, which allows for a gradual transition of the compression, rather than a hard threshold at which it starts. We had one channel fail just after the warranty expired. Unfortunately, that not only takes you down to 3 channels of compression, it means that only one of the stereo-links will work. But the other 3 channels (and the second unit) are still working fine.I feel the compressor colors my sound, making it a touch more "edgy" or "harsh." Regardless of the adjective, it's not a purely transparent sound. Overall, the DBX 1046 is a great value with a tiny footprint that has served me very well in live sound situations. However, it's failed me once and colors the sound a bit. I feel it's worth it.
