I love this compressor! I have two that I use for drums on 4 channels, and they are incredible. This unit will fatten your drum tracks, and your cymbals and tom-toms can be effectively compressed (using the 1066's Sidechain) to help prevent tape saturation. I think people struggle with using these because of their experience level, but if you buy one just take a few hours and experiment. Read the manual for some good suggestions and simply let your creativity flow! "A great investment, with incredible specs and a great price." The PeakStoPlus feature helps keep your system safe, but also allows for some very cool creativity.

I originally purchased the 1066 for my bass rig, which consists of: Ampeg SVPCL preamp, Alembic F-1X preamp, Crest Audio CA-4 power amp, and two Aguilar 2x12 cabs. The performance of this unit was disappointing. There was an obvious fluttering, uneven sound, especially on the lower notes. Regardless of how I tweaked this thing, the problem still remained. So I figured I'd try it out in the project studio to see if it might work better for other instruments. It's performance on drums and guitar, though not as bad as it was on bass, was still poor, there was still a floppiness and unsteadiness to the sound, here again most noticeably on lower notes. When it was tried on vocals, it performed much better, but not any moreso than units costing one-third the price. But at least it wasn't fluttering here. It definitely seems that this unit is not well-suited for anything with a lot of low end, and for vocals you'd save a lot of money and aggravation getting something else altogether. DBX has made some top notch equipment over the years, but they flopped on this one!

this unit has been in my company's (and personal) racks for over 5 years and has always been a solid performer. I can attest to its flexibility and ability to work without removing the music from the sound. This unit has always been my first choice for instrumentation, such as drums, perc., bass, guitars, keys, etc. For vocals, i don't like gates so i lean more towards a 160a or a bss dpr-404 since it has a de-esser (an absolute must for some situations). Like it, love it, give it a test run. Play on!
