Compact, powerful controls for Pro Tools.

The DigiDesign Command 8 control surface puts integrated, tactile control of Pro Tools TDM or LE systems running on Windows XP or Mac OS X at your fingertips more affordably than ever before. Through a simple USB connection, Command 8's 8 bankable channels of touch-sensitive motorized faders, rotary encoders, and LCD displays enable you to control your Pro Tools system with a fully featured, intelligent control surface. As with other Digidesign control surfaces, Command 8 gives you channel strip mixing functionality along with the ability to view and edit plug-in parameters and to automate sends, pans, track volume, and mutes. Transport controls (Play, Record, etc.) are also included, complete with a footswitch jack for QuickPunch and TrackPunch in, further increasing your independence from mouse-and-keyboard-only interaction with your sessions.

The DigiDesign Command 8 control surface also features a 1-IN/2-OUT (16 channels in/32 channels out) MIDI interface for integrating your MIDI-compatible gear into Pro Tools. Its Standalone MIDI controller mode enables you to use the Command 8 with your favorite third-party MIDI applications and devices - any device or application that accepts MIDI control change messages for level, panning, solo, mute, MIDI Machine Control, and other mappable parameters.

For keeping an ear or 2 on your mixes, the DigiDesign Pro Tools controller includes an onboard monitor system featuring acclaimed Focusrite audio performance and quality. It supports a main Pro Tools Input, external source (a turntable mixer or CD player, for example) and separate speaker and headphone outputs.

Along with Pro Tools TDM and LE systems, Command 8 also supports Avid products natively, including Avid Media Composer. When used with Avid products, Command 8's controls are mapped to the Automation Gain Tool for recording dynamic volume automation as well as Solo, Mute, and Snap Mode on and off. Because it connects via USB, no additional MIDI interface is required. Better yet, when used in such a way, Command 8's onboard monitor system alleviates the need for an external mixer for
        speaker control.

Due to its compact size, affordability, and compatibility with both Pro Tools TDM and LE systems, Command 8 is equally well-suited for project studios and small editing suites in commercial post or music studios.

While there are several Pro Tools-compatible compact control surface options from third-party manufacturers, only Command 8 is made by Digidesign and Focusrite specifically for Pro Tools. As a result, DigiDesign Command 8 control surface provides a great deal more sophisticated control with Pro Tools software and has been tested and qualified specifically for Pro Tools.

        Awesome Board

        By obatron-one

        from Los Angeles County California

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

After spending quite a bit of time at an associates studio equipped with a C24 protools mixer/controller I decided that I had it with using the mouse. So many songs I recorded were just taking too long for me to just jump in and mix. You try mixing 30+ mixtape songs using the mouse...yeah...it sucks. I searched my options and decided to pick up one of these boards to accompany my protools set up via digi 002 rack. So far I have increased my work rate 10 fold due to the simplicity of this control surface. I rarely touch the mouse now when I'm working in the lab. I especially love the flip mode giving me the ability to adjust multiple plug in sends at once using the faders rather than the knobs. I cannot say anything bad about this item at all. It is very accurate and never bogs down my system. Now there's one caveat. This isn't a conventional mixer. It's more of a control surface. So you won't find a variety of inputs that you can use to record with. With all that said this thing will greatly improve your speed on protools. If you don't have about 10 g's to shell out for a c24 get this controller. Also, be smart about it...there's nothing wrong with getting it new, but there are plenty of folks selling these used. I got mine for less than half price.

        Not for musicians?

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

I have used this machine, and I would like to point out that not all musicians have difficulty accepting that it is not a mixer. I am not bashing the other review, I am just saying that if you have adequate experience recording and are used to doing home recording, you will have nooooo problem's at all using this as a control surface not a mixer, same as with anything, if you know what you're doing you will have no problems. I know many a musician who has done an excellent home recording.

        Feel the Power!!

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

I bought this control surface last week. Previously I was using a Behringer BCF2000 and I didn't think mixing could get any better. That is until now! The command 8 is easy to configure in Pro Tools 8 software. I had this thing up and running within minutes. The command 8 and Pro Tools are a match made in heaven. It gives you so much control over the editing, transport, plug-ins, and more. It is well constructed with metal and a little hard plastic. So, it should last a long time. HUI compatible control surface are okay, but the command 8 is great!

Great, solid product. Not for musicians.

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

The Protools lab at my college has one of these on every machine. Using this thing for just 10 minutes makes you realize "wow, I don't know how I'll ever go home and do a mix without this." I've used other control surfaces like the one on the M-Audio Project Mix I/O and the one on the Digi003. This is a great device if money is no object but you don't want to put down the 10 grand on a C|24. The only problem I found with it is that for some reason my non-engineer friends can't grasp the idea of "its not a mixer, its a control surface" so if you're in a band and your band wants to buy some recording gear, don't buy this. You, no offense, will have a hard time using it. In fact, you should probably be hiring someone else to do your recording for you...I never run the controls for my own songs. But that's a lesson for another day.

        Great extension to pro tools

        By Aaron262

        from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about. After enabling this device in Pro Tools (which was easy enough), this device was up and running right away. I am using Pro Tools 7 LE on an iMac with a Digi 002 rack unit. The Command 8 brings all the power of Pro Tools into an easy to use, real world, tactile interface. The motorized faders are responsive (and fun to watch, too) and it's much easier to work in Pro Tools with the Command 8 than it is making selections with a mouse all day. If you're going to use Pro Tools, this interface greatly simplifies many tasks.

Most incompatible piece on the planet

Comments about Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface:

This command service will not work on your computer or at least on the five computers i tried this product on. On all five the hardware was not recognized by the software that came with the product. I sent it back for a refund and spent half the money on something that actually works.
