Ok, so I bought this without reading any reviews. It was recommended to me at a local music store. No, didn't get it from here but maybe this review will help those that follow.I looked on the box and read the system requirements. My computer greatly exceeded them all. I was all set. So I thought.Installation was smooth. The software is very robust and packed with features. That isn't the complaint. What you do NOT see on the box is the high recommendation that you use a hard drive that is NOT your main system drive. That means a different internal drive or an external firewire drive. External USB will not work. Also, the external firewire has to have a specific chipset. I found this out because the one I happened to have did not have the right chipset.Essentially what happens is after several seconds of recording, you get an abrupt error about a buffer or something. Just google 6086 error and you'll see. There are pages upon pages about this error on forums. So, with that said; I am returning this product. It's just too much hassle and work to get some simple recording done at home. If I were a pro-audio guy I'd tough it out and make it work. Rather, I'd probably have something a lot more high end in the first place.Bottom line: Do not buy unless you have done your homework as to whether it will run on your system. If it does then fantastic, you'll reap the rewards. If not, you'll be in for a headache.

Fantastic for Home Studios!

By

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

Bought it, installed it, LOVE IT!!!! I do not care that it needs an external drive because I have a 500GB Elements that works fine with this (USB by the way - not Firewire as everyone has complained about)). I just increase the H/W Buffer size as explained in the instructions and off I go! The BFD Lite plugin is my favorite but you also get compression/limiting, Amplitube LE, tuners, all kinds of plugins. IMO, you can't get a better studio for under $200. I have had it for 4 years now and it has survived a total wipe/reinstall of my Windows OS (got a nasty Trojan virus)about 2 months ago. I was even able to login to the AVID website to retrieve all of my activation codes to get back to exactly where I was when my PC froze. If you are looking to turn a computer into a Home Recording Studio for about $200 look no further. Just please read the specs and know that yes you will have to buy an external drive if yours doesn't match up.

Mixing Engineer/Underground Producer

By

from The Bay Area

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

This M-Box is so perfect. Over the past 10 years my studio has grown and shrunk and grown again and has now shrunk for the last time. II first got this M-Box because I needed a small rig to move about. I had a room full of gear centered around a digi002 complete with light pipe and a 32 channel analog board (not to mention the racks of out board gear. Long story short. I began to complete mixes inside the box and I my clients still thought I was using the strips on the board. the electric bill went down. This M-Box and Pro Tools (and good plug ins) has delivered quality mixes that are limited only by my mixing skills. ITB is the way to go.

Very happy with this purchase

By

from In the sticks

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

I bought this package a couple months ago. Everything works as it should. The Pro Tools package is AWESOME!! This actually does come with everything you need to produce professional recordings. Of course, if you want to record more than one source at a time, you will want a bigger interface.. But the Pro Tools package is well worth the price of this package by itself.

Overall its good

By

from Charlotte NY native

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

I've owned mines for about 7 months. When I first bought it, it wasnt compatiable with my laptop so I had to buy another cpu. It wasnt hard to get up and running and I've owned a previous M-Powered protools setup. The preamps in the M-box itself kinda suck in my opinion. My M-Audio Mobile pre that records AT 16BIT sounded better without a preamp in my opinion.. Know the goodness of this box is that it ships with protools le. Everything sounds better in protools in my opinion. I have a AT2020 running into a Presonus preamp ran into my Mbox mini. I also have the sound output of the mini running into my mixer. With a little mixing and compression I can say that I am proud of my Budget studio sound. Not to mention that I use Ozone to sort of master my finish product. I'm working on my fourth album and I must say that this is probably the best product i have done so far...

Seperate Hard Drive!!?!!

By

from NYC

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

After installation issues (with a 32 bit Vista Ultimate laptop) were resolved by downloading the program from digidesign (apparently I had a bum CD)the program ran terribly. The demo tune sputtered and stalled! So after digging in the digidesign user group I discover they recommend not running it on the system drive but on a seperate hard drive!! Not a USB hard drive (God Forbid) but a firewire or SCSI approved drive. THIS IS NOWHERE IN THE SPECS!! Not on Musicians Friend, nor on the digi website, nor in the manual.Thank God Digi let me return it. BUT WHY ARE THESE SPECS NOT PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED? Am I the only newbie at Pro Tools that didnt know about this?

Great for beginning, but not for expanding

By

from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

As a Recording Engineer who is half way through college for recording, I bought this because i was starting out and had little money. It is a good purchase for starting out and for mixing. The lack of features (limited ins/outs/mic pres) is what brings it down. It will get you through the day and is a great tool while learning but for expansion, you cant do much. I have found ways to make it work but if you have the money, save it for a Digi 002 or 003.

Great Introduction

By

from San Francisco,CA

Comments about Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini:

I have been very pleased with this product. I was up and running very quickly. The installation went very and the hardware works great. The only issues I have had are related to my inexperience. However, I will say the way Digidesign's product support is a little disapointing. I understand the tech industry and how they love to pinch pennies out of everything, and Digidesign is no different it seems.Other than that I am pleased and will probably upgrade soon.
