OVERVIEW

Sterling sound and awesome flexibility for your laptop.

The E-MU 1616M Master Laptop CardBus Digital Audio System is among the most powerful and portable laptop audio systems ever created. It includes a PCMCIA card and compact MicroDock audio/MIDI interface and delivers the same powerful DSP effects, zero-latency monitoring and the same master-grade 24-bit/192kHz A/D/A converters used in Digidesign's Pro Tools HD 192 interface.

The PCMCIA card can be used alone for its DSP power and studio-quality headphone amp or plugged into the MicroDock for a total of 16 inputs and 16 outputs plus ADAT, S/PDIF, and MIDI I/O. Inputs include two custom preamps with Neutrik connectors, 48V phantom power, and an analog soft-limiting circuit for clip protection. System ships with ASIO2 and WDM drivers for Windows XP and 2000, as well as the Production Tools software bundle that includes E-MU's Proteus X LE, plus software by Steinberg, Ableton, IK Multimedia, and many more--everything you need to create, record, edit, master, and burn your music.

FEATURES
  • 24-bit/192kHz converters—the same A/D converters used in Digidesign's flagship ProTools HD 192 I/O Interface
  • Hardware-accelerated effects—over 600 standalone and E-MU Power FX VST plug-in effects with no CPU overhead
  • Zero-latency hardware mixing and monitoring with super-flexible patchbay—no external mixer needed

  • Compatibility with most popular audio/sequencer applications—ultralow latency 24-bit/192kHz ASIO 2.0 and WDM drivers
  • Production Tools Bundle includes Steinberg's Cubase LE and WaveLab Lite, Ableton

ProTools HD mastering converters are only found on special consoles costing thousands and tens of thousands of dollars, and on the M series interfaces by EMU. That is the most important aspect of a good recording interface, the conversion, dynamic range, and bandwidth. This thing has 120dB ratings all over the board, GREAT!!! It runs off of the card bus slot on your laptop and conatins it's own DSP processing chip to relieve overload on your CPU during intensive recording applications, GREAT!!! As for the last review I hardly consider Focusrite or JoeMeek noteworthy preamps. The preamps on this unit are good, but there are preamps that cost thousands of dollars for a single channel. Usually Focusrite and JoeMeek pres only have $100-$300 pres in them. So just keep in mind that these are GOOD and not EXTRAORDINARY preamps, if you're really using a top-dollar mic you should be using a top-dollar mic pre and mic cable (such as Mogami Gold). But if you are looking for the best interface possible for under 10 K this is it!!! Or if you use a desktop the 1820M is it. But EMU has a real good thing going, it's a shame that the MAC users can't enjoy this piece. It's got all the ins and outs you need to record a good deal of stuff. I use all 6 inputs to mic my drumset in 6 tracks, try doing that on any other interface at or below this price, most of them don't even have the capability to handle that many inputs let alone the bandwidth.

Let me start by saying E-mu has done a fantastic job in putting everything I need into one tiny little box. BRAVO! Now all I need is for it to work. I've had this thing for six months using a an AMD k-6 @ 2ghz with 2 gig of ram running Cubase SX2. Every once in a while this nasty little puppy decides it wants to work for about two hours out of the week and when it does, its AMAZING! But normally it just freezes up my PC causing me to just fiddle around with my synths day-dreaming about what wonderfull music I COULD be recording if I had a working setup. Emu support is great in the way that they told me how to patch it up and even how to download the new drivers and reinstall them over and over again but to no avail. If only I had a majic wand...

excellent product

By Jimmy Joe

from Netherlands

I bought this interface after a few days of research. The E-MU 1616m is one of the best audio interfaces you will find out the for under $1000. The quality is superb and clear. E-MU really did a good job on this product. The drivers are very stable and the converters are top notch. The preamps are nice and clean. There are many ins and outs on this interface; enough to keep you satisfied. I would recommend anyone to get this audio interface. Best value on the market!

I love it!

I have owned the EMU1820m and have been using that on pro projects for about a year. Thinking it might be nice to have a decent portable laptop based system, I purchased the 1616m. I am totally impressed. I'm using it with Nuendo 2 on an HP DV1040 notebook (1.2 gig mem)with an additional monitor, LaCie drive and USB trackball. It totally rocks and sounds as good as the 1820m. The Emu systems have the best software based mixing board and the onboard DSP works great with no strain on the computer processor. The included software and plug ins are killer if you don't already have them.I must comment that EMU stuff is not the easiest equipment to deal with. If you are not into a steep learning curve and tweaking your computer, you might want to find something less. If you need real power, options and are willing to learn, get the 1616m.

Love it

This Audio System is great! Plug a good mic into it, and play away. Amazing recording quality from this setup. The only beef I have is the PowerFX VST's. When insterted after recording, they seem to give a little extra noise(maby it's just me.) However, when using them in realtime, they are awesome. The PatchMIX is wonderful! It takes quite a bit of time to understand how it functions, and how to make it function the way you want...once you figure it out, it's simple, and powerful. The stand out feature: This is a GREAT setup for recording vocals! Add your PowerFX's(compressor, rev., exciter) before the send in PatchMIX, and sing away. Keep your settings loose, cause you can use inserts after recording to perfect the sound...anyway, hope something in here helps potential buyers out!Peace

Amazing sound low latency

Read the manual FIRST and you will have no problems with the drivers. I am AMAZED at the sound quality. Absolutely dead quiet pre-amps, and I also own JoeMeek and Focusrite pres, so I know what a good pre sounds like. Running VST Mini-Moog and 8 stereo audio tracks on a P4 3.2g Toshiba the latency is 2MS !! That's as good as it gets, folks. The onboard FX are good but not quite stellar. On the plus side, there is zero CPU drain with the Emu FX. If I had to do it over again, I would buy this box in a heartbeat.

Best sounding interface period.

By Drumex

from TX

This thing has saved me a lot of money and has out performed anything in and outside of its class. My recordings have never sounded better, the detail is amzing. The converters are simply outstanding. Preamps are ultra clean and intrument inputs actually sound good too. Software is amazing and the drivers are smooth as butter. If your serious about having the most accurate sound instead of paying attention to features (which this thing has plenty of) or ease of use and other crap, then this is our only choice, theres nothing better sounding at the price or 2 times for that matter.

I was very happy with the overal tone of my first recording. I had E-mu tec support on the phone four times helping me to get started. But they were very helpful , no problem getting through ( on the phone). No pops or glitchs on playback.

I did a lot of research before I bought a buscard and ran across this card at Musician?s Friend. This is a HIT. I got the 1616M and glad I did. You won't find anything like this anywhere PERIOD. I hooked this up to my HP ZD-8000 Laptop with no installation problems or issues at all. After setting the 1616M up with SONAR 5, I connected the Adat light pipe directly to my Radar II to transfer digital audio to my Sonar 5 Pro and the audio transfer was perfect and in sync. No sync issues either. I couldn't tell a difference in the transfer. It's incredible. I've also recorded instruments through the analog inputs to Sonar 5 and the sound is clean. If you have a quite guitar it will sound quite but if you have a noisy guitar... well you get the picture. Garbage in Garbage out. It's an awesome product to take on the road to write songs and sing into. This is a must have for you laptop folks. You can't go wrong here.I just wish I could have done this sooner.JUST BUY IT.My laptop Specs:Win XP Pro sp2P4 3.0GHz100GB HD 7200rpm2GB Ram17" Widescreen WSXGABluetooth wirelessDVD+/- w/lightscribeSonar 5 Producer

EMU - The best.

This card is hands down amazing. I'll point out some things you may or may not find with other ifaces. If you go FW or USB you WILL NOT be able to loop WDM back into the system. For example: if you use a program that doesn't support ASIO and want to send the WDM audio into a program like Audition - you are SOL. With EMUs powerful mixer you can router any signal into WDM or ASIO. You can even send ASIO to WDM or vice versa. If you'd like to use the device with a desktop all you need is a PCMCIA PCI Adapter - 20 bucks and now you can use with your laptop or desktop system. One advantage of the 1616m over the 1820m is the feature of soft-limiters. No worries on over-clipping signals. I suggest reading the PDF on EMUs site for a good 30-45min. If you need something complex or something simple the EMU will cover you. I've tried the EMU 1820, 1616, M-Audio USB/FW cards (to many to list). This is the BEST I've used. The Sonar LE will get you by if you don't need anything fancy and just laying down analog audio and basic MIDI tracks. Do yourself a favor - check this out. Also in regards to the PCMCIA card being flimsy, EMU just sent me the latest version and it is a lot stiffer. The EMU 1616M also had a few little updates to the optical ports.
