Comments about Elation Magic 260 - 260-Channel DMX Controller:
This was the only controller I could find that I could program specific X/Y points to aim light scanners to a specific performer on the stage. Set these memories up once before the show, and the preset scenes and the chases that use them will be able to spotlight a specific location on any stage.
This is quite expensive compared to a few other similar sized units. This thing was built very well, solid, and appears to have rugged controls and switches on the panel. I did find it difficult to remember how to program and have to use a cheat sheet to program it. The X/Y stuff is particularly confusing to remember.
The encoder knobs may be precise, but very time consuming to turn from 0 to 255 every time I need to adjust a fader, so when programming a lot of scenes, it takes a lot of time and is very tedious to constantly turn, turn, turn the fader dials. Knobs or sliders would be helpful, or a shift button to move the encoders X10.
The library of fixtures unfortunately doesn't include what I considered to be several common fixtures, so I contacted elation to get them programmed. It was difficult, I had to provide the documentation and the resulting fixture definitions were technically correct but a bit akwardly implemented - they just didn't "get" how the fixtures operated. For example, some of my fixture's dimmer channels work in reverse, but using the master fader on them can't handle the reverse. I ended up using the default fixture definitions so I have no memory cues on the LCD panels.
The worst thing about this "Magic" is that it constantly erases its own memory while I am programming it. It constantly overwrites the pre-programmed XY presets I intend to use. First, individual lights in scenes just disappear while I am programming it and then eventually it just erases all of my programming work for the last hour or so. Poof - gone!
Most recently I tried re-initializing the unit according to the manual, and ALL the built-in fixture libraries just disappeared - rendering this box totally useless to control even a single channel! I've tried to get this thing working several times but its just busted. It now sits in the corner of my closet and collects dust, having never gone out to control a show yet. At least my AmDJ DMX-40 has been much more reliable and has taken a few beatings and is still working.
Comments about Elation Magic 260 - 260-Channel DMX Controller:
I own an Elation DMX programmer, a Chauvet DMX-50 and the Elation 260. The 260 is without a doubt the better of the three products.Pros:finally a user manual that makes sense.easy to program after reading the manual.can be programmed to meet many different needs.Cons:Dials take a little getting used to.Internal Mic isn't that good.expensive.Here is my story. I'm the bass player in a band. I needed a light controller that would handle intelligent lighting as well as Par Cans. The internal mics of all the lighting controllers flat did not work - too sensative, picked up everything. My way around this was to purchase an XLR - RCA adapter and an XLR volume controll. Now I can program my light show and have had success in the shows appearance. Bottom Line:If you are a DJ and wanting a board that will give you unlimited programability - here it is.If you are a musician that is wanting a complex light show - here it is.If you are a DJ or musician that is budget minded, attempting to make a simple light show (par cans only) look else where. It's to expensive for that. It's a great board and has many good features, but its not for the person who just wants flashing lights.
Comments about Elation Magic 260 - 260-Channel DMX Controller:
This little controller is great. You won't find another with the same features and capabilities at this price point. I will say that programming does take a little bit of learning (and the manual was written by a 3rd grader), but after it is learned, you will have soooo much fun with this thing. I use it for theatrical productions, and even with all of our lights, we don't fill up the 260 DMX channels. Another cool feature is the audio input where you can sync the lights to music. Very cool. If you have a limited budget and are looking for a GREAT controller, don't ask questions... just buy!!!
Comments about Elation Magic 260 - 260-Channel DMX Controller:
I own a Magic 260 and cannot say enough about it! I have operated numerous lighting boards including the Show Designer 3 and for the money size and capabilities this unit is well worth the money. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to buy one board and have lots of use out of it for years to come. About the only downfall I could see with the board is the choice of knobs for programing as opposed to slide controls. However the pots are far more robust than the slide controls which I have found have broken off with use over time.
