Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:
While the sound was clear, the bass response was non existent. They are unusable without a sub, and I would even say they are not really full range speakers. I tried them at two events that K8's would have blown away and I might as well have had a boom box. I returned them and I await the arrival of some new K8's.

Just finished the St. Patrick's Day week with a pair of these at 2 outdoor tent venues and 1 indoor pub. These are light to carry, perfect sounding, versatile in every venue, and loud enough to be heard over 500 drunks.
Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:
Definitely has a high-mid presence that is nice for live vocals and guitar, but needs to be eq'd out for recorded music. This hump in the upper mid works well as one moves back away from the speaker, because the throw of this speaker is so short that there is a huge change in perceived response and volume going from five to twenty feet. As a closely positioned floor monitor, we loved this speaker. These got fatiguing to the ear when they were pushed with recorded music, and they were not that loud before this happend(all levels properly set). Missing musical detail the harder they were pushed (just up to an occasional blink of the yellow limiter led)so backing a quater way down and leaving proper headroom, they weren't very loud, but were very musical. Tried it with a good sub, the tiny blue pushbutton and associated high pass filter was perfect. Great for a small coffee house, small bar or as a monitor wedge. Easily carry one in each hand. Nice and light.
Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:
Well, I've used these speakers extensively and I love them. They deliver sparkling highs, great fidelity and yes, plenty of bottom, which really surprised me- all that low end from an 8" woofer! The venues that I work however, pair these speakers with high - end Allen & Heath mixing boards and that might make a big difference. If you have a cheap mixer, it's going to be difficult to get a good sound no matter what speakers you use but the other way around, if you have a really good mixer, you'll be OK with most speakers. They're light, loud and sturdy and I'm going to buy a pair and sell my big PA speakers. Love 'em.BP
Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 Powered PA Speaker:
First I'll say that I am not a "gear snob" and didn't A/B test things to death. I just wanted a small, lightweight powered speaker for solo acoustic bar gigs. I was hoping to get away with just one speaker. I have a Bose L1 rig that I use for larger venues and with my 4 piece band (1 L1 with 2 B1 subs for 3 vox and a sax). I don't play super loud, but I play bars not coffee houses so you have to get well above the din. I tried a Roland AC-60 but after 10 minutes I knew that was NOT going to cut it in a bar. It sounded pretty but no real balls without clipping. I searched on-line and found the ZXA1 but few good reviews that fit my situation but it looke promising. I bought one and just got back from my first gig. I was flat out stunned how well it worked. I had a second powered speaker just in case but after the first set I just ran the one ZXA1 off an Alesis mixer. Acoustic guitar and Shure beta 58 straight into the mixer. Had plenty of power to spare and people really enjoyed the tone and clarity - ZERO distortion and it was uncomfortably loud at time.I did a few tunes with an electric guitar through a Digitech amp modeler/pedal and that was great as well. People loved the tone and was as loud as needed.End of the night the manager said the other guys should take a clue from me - most of them have too much gear and it does not sound nearly as good. One ZXA1 is going to handle 80% of my bar gigs. I also tried a Fishman solo amp. The Fishman did sound more "natural" but the ZXA1 was far more "musical" whatever that means and it certainly responded much better to agressive slashing which I like to do on acoustic (not all the time...) Also the ZXA1 is much better looking than the Soloamp and you can control it remotely from the mixer. I'm very happy with the purchase.
