Focusrite

The 2 in/2 out USB recording interface for musicians on the go.

Mobile recording is at an all-time high and you need an audio interface that can maintain optimal performance at any moment when inspiration strikes. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the right tool for the job. With two award-winning Focusrite preamps packed into a compact, anodized aluminum uni-body chassis, the Scarlett 2i2 not only produces professional quality sound but also looks great doing it.

For more than 25 years, Focusrite has designed some of the most popular microphone preamps in the industry. This experience has been used to create the transparent, low-noise and low-distortion preamp found in the Scarlett 2i2. Plenty of available headroom makes it suitable for moving coil, condenser and ribbon microphones regardless of the source. Phantom power is provided for mics that need it.

High Quality Mic Preamps
Scarlett 2i2 features two high quality award-winning Focusrite mic pres. With more than 25 years of experience in designing analogue equipment, Focusrite produce the best mic preamps in the industry. The preamps found in the Scarlett 2i2 are no exception to this, and share the same design as those found in our flagship interfaces: Saffire PRO 40 and Liquid Saffire 56.

Excellent Digital Performance
With 24-bit resolution at sample rates of up to 96 KHz, the digital conversion in the Scarlett 2i2 is of very high quality meaning that every note and every subtle detail is captured with great clarity.

Rugged Metal Unibody Case
The anodized aluminum uni-body chassis ensures that your Scarlett 2i2 can withstand the harsh environment of the road. It also makes Scarlett 2i2 the most beautiful interface around.

Truly Portable Interface
Scarlett 2i2 is very light and compact making it easy to fit in a laptop bag. It’s also bus powered meaning that you don’t need an additional power supply. Simply plug in to your computer and hit record!

Included Software – DAW and Effects
Inside the box you’ll find Ableton Live Lite 8, as well as Focusrite’s Scarlett plug-in suite. Compatible with all major DAWs, Scarlett plug-in suite provides EQ, compression, gate, and reverb – essential tools for polishing your mix.

Unique LED Gain Halos
The gain halos that surround the gain knob for each input provide an easy way to know that the signal you’re recording is the right level. It will show green when the signal is at a good level (above -24dBFS). If it turns to red, you know that the signal is too loud and is therefore clipping – if this happens, simply reduce the gain until the halo returns to green.

Direct Monitor Function
Flick the direct monitor switch on the front panel of your 2i2 and you will hear what you’re recording through your speakers or headphones, without the signal having to go through your computer. This avoids the possibility of latency, which can be distracting when recording.

Mac OSX Lion Ready
Scarlett 2i2 has been fully tested with Mac OSX 10.7, Lion. So you can rest assured that your brand new Mac and Scarlett 2i2 will run together perfectly.

I've used a lot of different audio interfaces over the years, but this one definitely ranks near the top of the list for overall value and quality. The preamps sound really good, low noise, works flawlessly without having to constantly monkey with the drivers, etc., I like the dedicated switches for direct monitoring, phantom power, and separate monitor and headphone volume controls. I recommend the 2i2 if you wish to have a simple, great sounding, compact USB audio interface that you won't have to think about or struggle with. ***Of course, YMMV - I've only used this on a 2010 iMac.***
No midi I/O, but not a big deal for me since my keyboard controller and drumpad do midi over USB.
Frankly, I LIKE the fact that this is a basic, no frills sound card. I don't need digital I/O connectors or external digital clock out, etc. that all just add to the price and confusion. Just a very nice sounding two channel audio interface, with switchable direct monitoring and separate headphone and monitor outs.
Like the other reviewer said, the case is built like a tank! The phantom power button feels a little flimsy, but all other switches and knobs and connectors feel solid. I downloaded the latest drivers from Focusrite's website, installation was quick and painless. Garageband and Reaper saw the 2i2 interface with no problems and worked like a champ! Reboots, wake from sleep, etc. and the interface was always recognized by the OS and audio software without any hiccups.

Pretty decent gain on the input channels with both condensor and dynamic mics. The noise floor is also very, very low. In fact, I could barely hear any hiss at all with monitor or headphone volume cranked up. Speaking of headphone volume, although there was little to no hiss, the overall volume of the headphones was adequate but not super loud, so if you're someone who needs ear deafening audio blasting out of your headphones, you may be disappointed.
This has to be one of the best value audio interfaces out there right now. You get a great sounding interface for not much coin.

I am a huge fan of Focusrite pres and interface products, generally-speaking, so I really hate to give this one the thumbs down. I have other higher-end Focusrite products that have lasted and performed well for years, but in my experience the Scarlett line is as cheaply-built as it is priced.

I bought the unit in a pinch when I needed to record a house-mix of a live show while out of town and away from my usual tools. Just picking it up, you can feel that it's cheaply made, but I'm not a snob about that if the sound is right and I understood that it contained the same pres that I've used in other devices, so it seemed like good luck when I found it locally.

It performed reasonably-well for that three-hour show, although the input volume controls were uneven between channels so that the same level of signal required different settings on each. Also, the volume went soft-to-loud rather suddenly within the tiniest degree of turn, making it difficult to achieve optimal levels with any precision. The volume increased evenly, but too softly until about 10 O'Clock on the knob and then increased suddenly within just the tiniest distance. Both knobs had a different spot where this sudden gain occurred.

After I got a feel for the tricky gain-setting, and decided that the pres sounded pretty good anyway, I decided to test it out with other applications, but a week later it started producing an intolerable level of noise that persisted across platforms and wiring conditions. I traded it in for a replacement, which was working well-enough for a few weeks, until it also started producing noise, including a persistent whine. As it was still within the return policy time-frame, I traded it in for a different item entirely because I felt like two failed instances of the same product is enough experience to know that it's not of the quality I'm looking for.

The Saffire Pro line is higher quality and performs better. I still love Focusrite, but the Scarlett line is not something I'd recommend to anyone, pro or otherwise.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

so far so good but i'm getting a different response when using the headphone jack. it actually sounds very different from my laptop sound card where the volume is not as high and at times there's latency issues.

i've recorded my bass directly and i have to say the recording sounds great. i'm just not too happy about the headphone jack. will need to work more with it though.

this thing is great for on the road!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

Don't buy this as your MIC recording interface if you plan to do any live productions. XLR inputs go to one channel only. If you want mono you have to mix it down in post. Google and you'll see. Could have easily have been remedied with a simple control panel applett but Scarlett mixcontrol is not available for the 2i2. The 6i6 was a better solution for my purposes for home recording, and the Shure X2u for live or portable work.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I purchased a Presonus USB Box and i would be lying if i said that it didn't work... It worked okay but no matter what you are doing it was always producing some strange humming clicking or squealing noise most likely not from the box directly but from feedback due to my computer fans hard drive ECT i mean it is connected directly to my computer after all, anyways I understand that everyone's setup has variables and sometimes it really is an issue with wiring and what have you but after trying multiple different USB cables and audio cables i had had it.... I went to buy something different that would hopefully work like i wanted. I went to best buy and purchased a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface and after connecting the box installing drivers.OH MY LORD!!! SILENCE! no more annoying sounds just pure clean sound no matter what your doing. It works amazing with my Micro Korg XL Technica MIC, Ableton,Itunes, and Traktor sighh finally i can start recording like I've wanted to.... THANK YOU FOCUSRITE!!for making such a high quality audio interface that works like a charm.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

After owning many Presonus devices and having them all die rather quickly, I decided to jump ship. I was looking for a simple audio interface to run vocals and instruments into Logic. I didn't need extra output routing or multiple inputs, as I have other gear for that. After some researching and reading reviews of the Scarlett, I ordered one to give it a try.

Out of box setup was brainless. Plugged it in and OSX (10.7 and 10.9) recognized it immediately. Opened Logic, plugged my bass in, checked the trim and recorded. Perfectly clear sound, no noise or artifacts and not brittle or harsh like some other cheaper interfaces. Tried it with vocals next with the same results and had a rough demo finished about 30 minutes after unboxing. It's small, light, USB-powered and appears durable (only had it a month, so I can't be sure).

This is NOT a feature-rich interface. It has two hybrid inputs, phantom power, pads for the inputs (labeled Line and Instr), L-R 1/4" outs and a headphone jack. But for it's intended purpose (to send clean audio to a computer), it works as well as I could imagine a device as inexpensive as this and better than more expensive interfaces I've tried. I am completely satisfied.

In summary, if you are looking for a small, simple recording interface for a home studio, the Scarlett 2i2 is a very good choice.

Right out of the box I was impressed with the look and feel. This is perfect for guitar players or other instrumental musicians who want to plugin to the computer DAW. It was very easy to setup. My on grief was trying to get the freebies. That was the hardest part. That wasn't the Scarlett's problem, though. Anyway, the guitar, mic (phantom powered), and headphones can be plugged in simply. Each channel has a boost/gain if needed (never needed yet) and has the very sturdy volume knobs. Great product - well designed - sound quality is excellent interfaced in with Abelton. I'm able to have a 96000 sample rate in Abelton, if needed.

I went from imac with 1/8 inch stereo input that I used a small mixer with, to Macbook Pro that didn't have 1/8 inch input. I needed a USB or Firewire interface. I bought the 2i2 and I installed the Scarlett driver. Within minutes I was recording into Garageband 11 with no problems. It does work well with mac.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

The 2i2 has given me the ability to record my Jam Tracks w/o disturbing the entire house. The sound effects add dimension to my recordings that I was lacking prior to the 2i2 and it integrated with my DAW with ease.
Easy to set up, easy to use, I recorded tracks in less then 15 minutes.
I'd recommend the 2i2 to everyone wanting studio quality recordings at a reasonable price and no hassle set up.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

As a singer for 30+yrs I wanted to do my own recording on my PC. My son the guitarist wanted to create his own music. This fits the bill for both.

Easy to set up and simple to make adjustments. I run it on Win7 with Sonar Home Studio XL and use a Shure SM57 mic. Learning curve was short.

As an intro into home recording, this was a great buy. No regrets.
