Focusrite

The 2 in/2 out USB recording interface for musicians on the go.

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a 2 in/2 out USB recording interface featuring two award-winning Focusrite preamps. Housed in an attractive anodized aluminum uni-body chassis, the interface not only sounds fantastic but looks great too. What’s more it’s solid enough to take on the road when you travel. The Scarlett 2i2 is much more than just a pretty metal box.

25 Years of experience
For more than 25 years, Focusrite has designed some of the most popular microphone preamps in the industry. This experience has been used to create the transparent, low-noise and low-distortion preamp found not only in the Scarlett 2i2 but also our flagship Firewire interface, the Liquid Saffire 56. Plenty of available headroom makes it suitable for moving coil, condenser and ribbon microphones regardless of the source. Phantom power is provided for mics that need it.

Plug straight in
The front panel Neutrik combination input can be used to connect line and instrument level signals as well as microphones. This makes it perfect for recording the output of a synthesizer or stage piano, whilst at the flick of a switch you can cater for the output of an electric or acoustic guitar.

Keep an eye on your levels
Unique halo signal indicators let you know that you’ve got a good signal level for recording. Red means that your signal is clipping, and that you should reduce the gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the level returns to a healthy level, at which point it will turn green.

Flexible monitoring options
A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for the volume of your speakers, whilst a high quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs. This allows you to monitor the incoming signal with zero-latency.

Polish your mix
The included Scarlett Plug-In suite provides effects compatible with all major DAWs; so whether you're using GarageBand, Pro Tools 9, Cubase, Logic or the included Ableton Live Lite, Scarlett 2i2 is the complete package for you to get recording straight away.

Key Features:

High Quality Mic Preamps
Scarlett 2i2 features two high quality award-winning Focusrite mic pres. With more than 25 years of experience in designing analogue equipment, Focusrite produce the best mic preamps in the industry. The preamps found in the Scarlett 2i2 are no exception to this, and share the same design as those found in our flagship interfaces: Saffire PRO 40 and Liquid Saffire 56.

Excellent Digital Performance
With 24-bit resolution at sample rates of up to 96 KHz, the digital conversion in the Scarlett 2i2 is of very high quality meaning that every note and every subtle detail is captured with great clarity.

Rugged Metal Unibody Case
The anodized aluminum uni-body chassis ensures that your Scarlett 2i2 can withstand the harsh environment of the road. It also makes Scarlett 2i2 the most beautiful interface around.

Truly Portable Interface
Scarlett 2i2 is very light and compact making it easy to fit in a laptop bag. It’s also bus powered meaning that you don’t need an additional power supply. Simply plug in to your computer and hit record!

Included Software – DAW and Effects
Inside the box you’ll find Ableton Live Lite 8, as well as Focusrite’s Scarlett plug-in suite. Compatible with all major DAWs, Scarlett plug-in suite provides EQ, compression, gate, and reverb – essential tools for polishing your mix.

Unique LED Gain Halos
The gain halos that surround the gain knob for each input provides an easy way to know that the signal you’re recording is the right level. It will show green when the signal is at a good level (above -24dBFS). If it turns to red, you know that the signal is too loud and is therefore clipping – if this happens, simply reduce the gain until the halo returns to green.

Direct Monitor Function
Flick the direct monitor switch on the front panel of your 2i2 and you will hear what you’re recording through your speakers or headphones, without the signal having to go through your computer. This avoids the possibility of latency, which can be distracting when recording.

Mac OSX Lion Ready
Scarlett 2i2 has been fully tested with Mac OSX 10.7, Lion. So you can rest assured that your brand new Mac and Scarlett 2i2 will run together perfectly.

I've used a lot of different audio interfaces over the years, but this one definitely ranks near the top of the list for overall value and quality. The preamps sound really good, low noise, works flawlessly without having to constantly monkey with the drivers, etc., I like the dedicated switches for direct monitoring, phantom power, and separate monitor and headphone volume controls. I recommend the 2i2 if you wish to have a simple, great sounding, compact USB audio interface that you won't have to think about or struggle with. ***Of course, YMMV - I've only used this on a 2010 iMac.***
No midi I/O, but not a big deal for me since my keyboard controller and drumpad do midi over USB.
Frankly, I LIKE the fact that this is a basic, no frills sound card. I don't need digital I/O connectors or external digital clock out, etc. that all just add to the price and confusion. Just a very nice sounding two channel audio interface, with switchable direct monitoring and separate headphone and monitor outs.
Like the other reviewer said, the case is built like a tank! The phantom power button feels a little flimsy, but all other switches and knobs and connectors feel solid. I downloaded the latest drivers from Focusrite's website, installation was quick and painless. Garageband and Reaper saw the 2i2 interface with no problems and worked like a champ! Reboots, wake from sleep, etc. and the interface was always recognized by the OS and audio software without any hiccups.

Pretty decent gain on the input channels with both condensor and dynamic mics. The noise floor is also very, very low. In fact, I could barely hear any hiss at all with monitor or headphone volume cranked up. Speaking of headphone volume, although there was little to no hiss, the overall volume of the headphones was adequate but not super loud, so if you're someone who needs ear deafening audio blasting out of your headphones, you may be disappointed.
This has to be one of the best value audio interfaces out there right now. You get a great sounding interface for not much coin.

I wanted to go from 16 to 24 bits and had hoped Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 would be a low-cost solution. I had heard good things about Focusrite pre-amps. I was very disappointed in this product and shipped it back as it was not useable. I do hope mine was defective, but I would not try another.
Either mine was defective or the design is bad. When overdubbing, I could only get stereo monitoring--that is guitar in on ear and voice in the other. I prefer a mono option for recording and monitoring vocals particularly, this doesn't have one.

The monitoring volume is quite low, too low to be useful.

The loaded plug-ins were no where to be found. While it says that it's compatible with Mac, I think it's likely not well suited for Macs.
While a track sounded good once recorded, if I wanted to record over a track, it would only partially record leaving that track unusuable as it would have artifacts from both recordings.
If it worked, it would be a good value.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

I wanted a portable USB interface to record practices, demos, and song ideas. The sound the interface captures is clean, and I was able to set the lag time to 1ms using Reaper as the DAW. I've only used economy interfaces, so I don't know what the best of the best sound like, but I am extremely pleased with this interface. It does not color the sound and is capturing exactly what is being played.

I had Windows Vista and I did not even try to install within that format. After I upgraded to Win8 it installed without a hitch. So it works but there is always gonna be a software learning curve so I haven't recorded with it yet.

It does very well what is supposed to do,the thing i liked the most was the ability to record two different tracks(guitar/vocals for example) at the same time to my PC or Laptop, the sound quality is great, I use it with Reaper on Ubuntu Studio 12.10 getting minimum latency.

Great value, above and beyond the quality of the others comparable in price. Only lacks the features that can be acquired in the 2i4 model (such as pad buttons and the added outputs).

I am having a slight ground hum out of my monitors but havn't fooled around enough with it to tell if it is the unit or bad cables.

All-in-all I would highly recommend it!

Sound quality is utterly amazing. Clear, warm, exact. The 2i2 was plug and play with my Macbook Pro. Recognized in Garageband immediately with no problems what-so-ever. I thought something was wrong it was so easy! I did a lot of pre-research as I anticipated having to spend a few hours working out any issues. Fortunately my preparation for the worst was all for naught. I thought my setup sounded decent before- now it really shines with the addition of the 2i2. Do yourself a favor and purchase this unit. It is worth much more than the price in my opinion. Thank you Focusrite- You have a new dedicated customer!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

Killer solution for all of you who've been burned in the past by TASCAM and/or other USB interfaces. This one has PLENTY of gain, extra-ordinarily clean sound and unlike the TASCAMs in particular, the software and drivers nearly set themselves up.

Instructions are very clear and well written even for the novice user. I recommended this to a friend of mine in AL who is certainly no wizzard at electronics or computers, and she set it all up in 10 minutes and it has worked flawlessly for her since.

Best solution I've seen available in any price range for a 2 channel interface.

Line Level RCA output Jacks on the back would have been a huge plus, as well as this is engineered I'm really surprized they didn't do this one thing. Other than this, it's the perfect solution for me and most 2 channel needs.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

When I first started recording, I used a Samson C01U usb condenser mic. I've finally upgraded to this audio interface with AT2041SP mics. I immediately experienced far improved sound quality. My fingerstyle is picked up with way more detail, and can barely hear the background noise or static. This interface is great for beginners, with 2 inputs where you can plug either XLR or instrument cables. It connects right into my laptop, and works with just an installation of software that comes with this product in a CD disc. I am definitely happy with this purchase!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface:

This product is very great for the price. The only thing that lacks is when you plug your instrument in, there's a little "pop", even if both instrument and interface volume are turned all the way down.
As far, this thing rocks. I've recorded a lot of little samples with it and it sounds very great. With Ableton Live Lite (included), I can add some audio effects and have better quality.
I didn't try the Scarlett Suite so far, so I can't say anything about it.
