OVERVIEW

Three-way monitors with true tri-amp.

The PM8.4.1 features an 8" woofer, 4" midrange and 3/4" tweeter powered by a 60W, 18W and 18W independent amplifier, respectively, for wider frequency range reproduction - a first for a Fostex PM-series monitor. The built-in channel divider provides ideally overlapped frequency crossovers for smoothest connections between the drivers. The midrange and tweeter are positioned symmetrically on the Left and Right to minimize the physical height of the enclosure boxes as well as to minimize the affect of diffraction. The woofer and the midrange are housed in an individual chamber respectively inside the enclosure box to have little interference between the drivers.

Three-step level adjustments are provided for HIGH at +1/0/-1 dB and LOW at +3/0/-3dB. The diaphragm for the woofer and the midrange is highly rigid with moderate internal loss being made of highly elastic Kevlar papered by Fostex's original engineering to reproduce any type of input source. The tweeter diaphragm is UFLC (Urethane Film Laminated Cloth) soft dome type to reproduce any types of high frequencies keeping its own transparency.

First impressions, these are solid and well built studio monitors. After a month of listening to a variety of music from my favorite recordings, I find the highs and mids are clean and accurate when set to the 0db setting. The +/- 1db high settings are very fine and a +/-3db may have been more useful for some people to adjust for room conditions. (I use a regular 11'x12' room for mixing). Some pro recordings lack a little in the highs while others are a little forward, some perfect...leading me to believe these Fostex PM841's are well balanced. They sound great on my previous home recordings.
For my room/ears I find the +3db bass setting gives me a full punchy linear response. Really glad I got the 8" woofer, my DW Collectors kick comes through defined, not just a thump. After listening to my "flavored" Infinity home speaker system with a subwoofer, the Fostex' sound a little flat...but after a few minutes my ears adjust and the linear dynamics and flat response sound full, clean and accurate. Definitely great for long mix sessions, my hearing fatigue has been minimal. Mixes translate well to my home, car and portable sound systems.
Power/spl is sufficient for a smooth mix, if you get to the point of overload/clipping with these, you're killing your ears anyway.
Years ago I helped design and build custom speaker systems using Dynaudio drivers. These Fostex speakers certainly have impressed me so far.

I really liked the look of these monitors and when listening casually to CDs, I was very pleased. Then I used them for solo piano monitoring and I realized that my set wasn't going to work. They would distort at low-moderate volumes on piano notes. This was apparent but less so on solo guitar. They wouldn't be usable for monitors in my setting. MF took them back and I got some JBLs instead. Those don't image as well but have no sound artifact problems

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):

There have seen negative comments about these speaker being defective! The problem has been caused by shipping!!! If these or any speaker takes a big drop the magnets will shift and cause damage. These Fostex speakers are Double boxed and well packaged, but some times arrive damaged. This happen to me and two more where quickly shipped out to me. These speakers are really accurate and SWEET sounding. You will discover defects in songs/music you heard before, but never noticed. These speakers sound great on dub step to symphonies! I really like them. I performed frequency sweeps and everything is there, but my hearing ends at 12K. Cant go wrong!

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):

I bought these monitors for a great price when they were on sale and they were my first 3-way (non subwoofer) system. I have previous owned Mackie HR824s, which were great; NS10s which serve their purpose; and most recently Dynaudio BM5 MKIIs, Event Audio Precision 8s, and JBL LSR6328s (yes, I have a gear problem). I was only able to compare the Fostex monitors to my Dynaudios and I have to say that I love the way the Fostex's sound. The 3-way system really gives each frequency a new level of precision and separation that I had not anticipated making the Dynaudio's sound congested and squashed in the low and low mids in particular, and also overall. I had previously really liked the Dynaudio's until making this direct comparison.

That said, both pairs (yes, I returned TWO pairs of the Fostex) of the Fostex monitors had some issues with distortion. It sounded like the mid range speaker would distort out of box on both sets. It might have been a crossover issue. I'm not sure. But I would remove the cable from my Dynaudio's where the sound was perfect and plug it in to the Fostex monitors to hear that strange distortion. I couldn't get it to go away so I'm not entirely sure what the cause is. If you can get a pair of these working in your studio I highly recommend it. I sadly could not.

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):

I spent years using reference headphones to mix recordings because I felt I couldnt afford a quality pair of monitors. My mixes suffered. I set out to get a great pair of monitors after saving for a long time and chose a pair of these. All I can say is AMAZING. From movies to music for general use to recording and mixing multiple genres these monitors are accurate and clean. Hands down the best sound I've experienced from any speakers in my life. I use them with a Focusrite Saffire Pro24 for recording/playback and Sonar Producer X3 for my DAW. Blown away. Im considering getting another pair for rear monitoring. Highly recommended

These monitors provide a clear and accurate representation of the audio that I have been mixing. They have also revealed problem areas in my mix that I just wasn't hearing with a two way speaker. They stand up to the Adam A8X monitors that I have used prior to getting these and at the price I got them for, coupling these with a good sub is still under the thousand buck mark which is awesome.

I bought these speakers to use for practicing guitar in my home studio. Since I have never owned a pair of studio monitors before, I really didn't know what to expect as far as sound quality and loudness. These Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitors by far exceeded my expectations. When I first fired them up I had to turn my equalizer down to flat on my mixing console because these speakers have such a great sound. As far as loudness goes, there is plenty for my personal taste. I have had some lengthy practices and I don't get fatigued from the sound of these speakers either. I even bought these as a restock item, so I got them for a killer price too! Thanks MF.

These monitors are excellent at this price. Construction is beautiful, build quality is superb. Just listening to music on these is enjoyable but mixing with them there is so much clarity, especially in the midrange. I use these together with ATH-M50x and Audix PH5-SW to mix and verify the quality through an old tv speaker.
