Three-way monitors with true tri-amp.

The PM8.4.1 is the very first 3-way monitor speaker from Fostex consisting of 8-inch woofer, 4-inch midrange and 3/4-inch tweeter. Powered by a 60W, 18W and 18W independent amplifier for wider frequency range reproduction - a first for a Fostex PM-series monitor.

It features an 8" woofer, 4" midrange and 3/4" tweeter driven by 60W, 18W and 18W independent power amplifier respectively. The built-in channel divider provides ideally overlapped frequency crossovers for smoothest connections between the drivers. The midrange and tweeter are positioned symmetrically on the Left and Right to minimize the physical height of the enclosure boxes as well as to minimize the affect of diffraction. The woofer and the midrange are housed in an individual chamber respectively inside the enclosure box to have little interference between the drivers.

3-step level adjustments are provided for HIGH at +1/0/-1 dB and LOW at +3/0/-3 dB. The diaphragm for the woofer and the midrange is highly rigid with moderate internal loss being made of highly elastic Kevlar papered by Fostex's original engineering to reproduce any type of input source. The tweeter diaphragm is UFLC (Urethane Film Laminated Cloth) soft dome type to reproduce any types of high frequencies keeping its own transparency.

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):

I really liked the look of these monitors and when listening casually to CDs, I was very pleased. Then I used them for solo piano monitoring and I realized that my set wasn't going to work. They would distort at low-moderate volumes on piano notes. This was apparent but less so on solo guitar. They wouldn't be usable for monitors in my setting. MF took them back and I got some JBLs instead. Those don't image as well but have no sound artifact problems

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):

I bought these monitors for a great price when they were on sale and they were my first 3-way (non subwoofer) system. I have previous owned Mackie HR824s, which were great; NS10s which serve their purpose; and most recently Dynaudio BM5 MKIIs, Event Audio Precision 8s, and JBL LSR6328s (yes, I have a gear problem). I was only able to compare the Fostex monitors to my Dynaudios and I have to say that I love the way the Fostex's sound. The 3-way system really gives each frequency a new level of precision and separation that I had not anticipated making the Dynaudio's sound congested and squashed in the low and low mids in particular, and also overall. I had previously really liked the Dynaudio's until making this direct comparison.

That said, both pairs (yes, I returned TWO pairs of the Fostex) of the Fostex monitors had some issues with distortion. It sounded like the mid range speaker would distort out of box on both sets. It might have been a crossover issue. I'm not sure. But I would remove the cable from my Dynaudio's where the sound was perfect and plug it in to the Fostex monitors to hear that strange distortion. I couldn't get it to go away so I'm not entirely sure what the cause is. If you can get a pair of these working in your studio I highly recommend it. I sadly could not.
