Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):
I really liked the look of these monitors and when listening casually to CDs, I was very pleased. Then I used them for solo piano monitoring and I realized that my set wasn't going to work. They would distort at low-moderate volumes on piano notes. This was apparent but less so on solo guitar. They wouldn't be usable for monitors in my setting. MF took them back and I got some JBLs instead. Those don't image as well but have no sound artifact problems

Comments about Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair):
I bought these monitors for a great price when they were on sale and they were my first 3-way (non subwoofer) system. I have previous owned Mackie HR824s, which were great; NS10s which serve their purpose; and most recently Dynaudio BM5 MKIIs, Event Audio Precision 8s, and JBL LSR6328s (yes, I have a gear problem). I was only able to compare the Fostex monitors to my Dynaudios and I have to say that I love the way the Fostex's sound. The 3-way system really gives each frequency a new level of precision and separation that I had not anticipated making the Dynaudio's sound congested and squashed in the low and low mids in particular, and also overall. I had previously really liked the Dynaudio's until making this direct comparison.
That said, both pairs (yes, I returned TWO pairs of the Fostex) of the Fostex monitors had some issues with distortion. It sounded like the mid range speaker would distort out of box on both sets. It might have been a crossover issue. I'm not sure. But I would remove the cable from my Dynaudio's where the sound was perfect and plug it in to the Fostex monitors to hear that strange distortion. I couldn't get it to go away so I'm not entirely sure what the cause is. If you can get a pair of these working in your studio I highly recommend it. I sadly could not.
